A JOURNEY OF FAITH Last Sunday, August 9, our RCIA candidates and team gathered as we concluded the journey of our faith this year with our RCIA Coordinator, Father Anthony, presiding at Mass during which candidate David Nix was welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church and sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation by Father Anthony. Special congratulations to David and Katy as they look forward to celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary this September 20th!

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 9, 2020
One benefit of living in New Jersey is that when you turn 62 you can ride the trains and buses of New Jersey Transit for half
price or better. I recently consumed a vacation day by taking the train from Oradell to Princeton, just to have something to do. To get there, you join the Northeast corridor train to Princeton Junction at the Secaucus transfer station, then switch to what is called the Dinky, a train of two small cars that completes the journey, which takes about an hour and a half altogether. On the way back, I saw a message flashing on a display of the train on the last portion of its trip. It read, “Please deposit trash in waste receptacles at each station.” This was a problem, since I never carry trash on my train trips, and certainly would never have enough to provide some for every stop along the way. Luckily, I disembarked before the conductor realized that I had failed to comply with the rules, and so escaped a reproach or a fine. We live in a world that has many rules, sometimes, perhaps, too many. How are we supposed to deal with them in our Christian living? It depends on whether they really engage morality. Some rules are merely penal laws and don’t have a connection with moral right and wrong. For example, we’re not supposed to cross a street in the middle of the block. But this is not really an issue of morality. If we get a ticket for this infraction, we have to pay the attendant fine, but we’re not committing a sin. Other laws do have implications for moral behavior. We have an obligation to obey just laws. Father Peter Armenio, who grew up in our parish,
(continued above)
has written a fine book called Our Moral Life in Christ. In it, he points out with admirable clarity that civil laws “in order to be true laws, must be derivatives from and applications of the Ten Commandments.” Such laws bind us and have to be obeyed. But what about unjust laws? Father Peter writes that
Unfortunately, unjust civil laws do exist. In these cases, how is a Christian to respond? This is a question that is raised frequently throughout the country—on behalf of pharmacists who do not want to dispense contraceptives or abortifacient drugs; soldiers who do not want to fight what they believe is an unjust war; medical students who do not want to learn to do abortions, to name a few.
Although today’s American society is not completely based on Christian morality, our own lives have to be. Father Armenio concludes his treatment on the different kinds of law in a firm but balanced way that offers us sound guidance when he says that
There are laws which are in violation of the natural law and which inflict serious injury upon the members of society. These are not true laws. They must be opposed, and lawful means to overtun them must be sought. It is always important that a concern for justice and resistance to evil be balanced with Christian love for all people and a genuine respect for civil authority.

R.C.I.A - (2020-2021) Is God calling you to something more?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is an opportunity open to adults interested in becoming Catholic or those who are thirsty to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church by completing their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist).
RCIA IS GOING VIRTUAL! Our RCIA program has been reimaged with a hybrid program that will take the form of virtual gatherings and presentations with conversations and moments of engagement throughout the program year. For individuals who might have missed the chance join in the past because of scheduling and time constraints, this may be the opportunity to engage your desire to take this journey of faith in today’s new reality. If you, or someone you know, are interested in learning more about RCIA, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you! For more information contact Fr. Anthony: [email protected] or call 201-261-0148 ext. 13.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” - Romans 11:29
God has a special mission in mind for each of us. He
has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission.
We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to
do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we
deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use
them, then some part of His work will be left undone.
