BREAD AND WINE INTENTIONS

The Bread and Wine for the week of December 13, 2014

is offered in thanksgiving for our grandsons

as requested by Edward & Carol Winkler.

A STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God. He will provide all you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 14, 2014

See our bulletin IN COLOR at sjcnj.org

GAUDETE SUNDAY Gaudete Sunday derives its name from the opening prayer of the Mass for this day, where we pray, "Gaudete in Domino

semper." (Rejoice in the Lord always.) So in the midst of Advent fasting and devotions, we rejoice because the time we have been preparing for is almost at hand. You may see rose-colored vestments and additions to the church environment due to this special Sunday.

A day like this is always good to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. The life of a Christian is not always easy, but it is one of joy. If we keep our heads bowed too long, no one will be able to see the smiles on our faces.

May the joy of the Lord be yours on this Gaudete Sunday! The Lord is coming, soon and very soon!

Not long ago a New Jersey county executive invited people to experience some elaborately planned enjoyments of the kind that have come to

be familiar during the Christmas season. The newspaper ad said:

Make the Essex County holiday extravaganza your family tradition! Turtle Back Zoo will be turned into a Winter Wonderland with extraordinary lighting exhibits, holiday music and entertainment. Stroll the landscaped paths of our Zoo and admire the illuminated images of everything from toy soldiers to dancing penguins.

And we can all certainly use some help dealing with the days of shortened light and increasing cold this time of the year brings. I can remember some of the seasonal family trips we used to take when I was a boy. Sometimes we got into the car and traveled through a number of towns just to look at the Christmas lights their residents would display. Each street presented its delightful contribution to the magic. And the sweeping view of much of the metropolitan area from Eagle Rock Reservation was wonderful to behold. These tours would end at Harrison, which was not a wealthy town but had a dazzling array of decorations overarching its main street. Some years we would go into New York to see the tree at Rockefeller Center. This involved walking to the Newark subway, then taking it to the PATH train (then called the Hudson tubes) for a trip to Hoboken, then boarding a ferry to the city, and finally making another, seemingly endless, walk to see the majestic and splendid tree, with all the skaters gliding gracefully below it. A drink of hot chocolate was always the perfect treat to accompany the excitement of being there. The cover of today’s bulletin shows the Canadian painter William Kurelek’s picture “O Toronto,” with its view of the busy street looking across to the old City Hall. All is at a height of busyness, with the sidewalks as thronged with pedestrians as the street is with vehicles. Does it remind you a little of the frenzy that becomes so familiar as we draw near to Christmas? Can you make out the figure on the building’s steps with his arms stretched out toward everyone? It is Jesus Christ, and he seems to be asking us to pay him some attention in the midst of all the intense activity. This is also what the Church invites us to do as we proceed through the second half of Advent. Don’t we have the need to step back, in peaceful prayer, to consider the one who is of the highest importance and to draw closer to him? To prepare for Christmas is to welcome Jesus Christ more fully into our lives. And this requires from us a specific resolve. And the effort is well worth it. Msgr. David Hubba

Make sure that you securely attach the tag you took to your gift. Without it, our office staff and the agencies we

If any tags remain on our trees, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take one and bring the wrapped gift (with tag attached) to the parish office/rectory by Wednesday, December 17.

Thank you for remembering those who would other-wise be forgotten.

OUR LADY COMES TO VISIT SAINT JOSEPH

Through the efforts of Knights of Columbus District Deputy and Saint Joseph parishioner Paul Noonan (shown rear center behind Fr. Roy), this beautiful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was brought to Saint Joseph Church November 22-24. Pictured with Paul are parishioners and members of the Legion of Mary who attended the closing payer service. “Mary offers us an example and a path of living out our discipleship of Jesus. Her free and complete surrender to God’s will, her generous availability to whatever God asked of her, her sharing in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—all these offer us a pattern for our discipleship. She is both a uniquely privileged person and someone like us, who helps us to live more and more fully in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (From Mary’s Journey by Rev.Louis J. Cameli © 1982/2003 Basilica of National Shrine)

DID YOU KNOW? Hanukkah, or the Feast of Lights, which begins at sundown on December 16, commemorates the Jewish victory in 165 BC over the Syrians, and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem which had

been desecrated with pagan worship. According to legend, only enough oil for one day was found. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, thus the eight days of Hanukkah. This is reflected in the ceremony of the lighting of the menorah, or eight-branched candelabrum: one light on the first night of the feast, two on the second, and so on until all the candles are lit on the last day of the feast. This ceremony gives Hanukkah its alternate name, Feast of Lights. ~Rev. James Gaffney

PRO LIFE MASS AT CATHEDRAL —JANUARY 18

“Each of us is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation.” The Archdiocesan Respect Life Office and the Pro-Life Commission will host a Pro-Life Mass at noon on January 18, 2015 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge Street, Newark. January 22, 2015 marks the 42nd anniversary of the legalization of abortion in this country. By attending this special Mass, those who wish to stand up for life but can-not attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., or the rally in Trenton, can still show their support and defend those who cannot defend themselves.
