MartelliistheHawks'all-timeleaderincareervic-tories with a mark of 411-279. Setting the schoolrecordforwinsinaseason(30)in2004,MartellihasguidedSJUto20ormorevictoriesninetimesinthepast 21 seasons,which is themost for anyHawks'coach.Hisrecordof200-143inAtlantic10playisthemostconferencewinsforanyactivecoachandrankssecondall-timeintheleague.

SevenofMartelli’splayershavereachedtheNBA,with three First Round draft picks - DeAndre’Bembry (2016), JameerNelson (2004) andDelonteWest(2004)-andasecond-roundselectionAhmadNivins(2009).DwayneJonesandRonaldRoberts,Jr.each had NBA stints while undrafted free agentLangstonGallowayearnedAll-RookieSecondTeamhonorswiththeNewYorkKnicksin2014-15.Nelson(Denver), Galloway (New Orleans) and Bembry(Atlanta)arecurrentlyplayingintheNBA.

Martellihasbeenathisbestwhen itcountsthemostashis18postseasonwins(7NCAA,11NIT)arethemostinschoolhistory.HehastakenSJUtothepostseasoninfourofthelastfiveyears,and13timesinhis21seasonsatSJU.

Saint Joseph’s 2015-16 team made its mark asoneof thebest in schoolhistory, compiling a28-8record for the second-most victories for a Hawkteam.SJUwonitssecondA-10titleinthreeseasonsand advanced to the NCAA Second Round for thefirst time since 2004. Martelli, who recorded his400th career win, earned Big 5 Coach of the YearhonorsastheHawkswerethethirdmostimprovedteaminthenation.Healsohadtwoofthebestplay-ersintheleague,asDeAndre’BembrywastheA-10Player of the Year and Isaiah Miles was the Most

ImprovedPlayer,withbothearning All-Conferencehonors.

He has also served thegame of basketball as aPast President of theNABC’s Board of Directorsand as member of theNCAA Division I Men'sEthicsCoalition.In2016,hewashonoredwiththeGeneBartow Award byCollegeInsider.comforout-standing achievement andcontributionstothegame.

The 2014-15 Hawkswere challenged after los-ing three All-Conferenceplayersfromthe2014A-10champion team, but sawthe emergence of sopho-more DeAndre’ Bembry ashetoppedtheA-10inscor-ingandearnedAll-ConferenceFirstTeamhonors.

In2013-14,Martelliandhisveteranteamturnedinoneofthemorememorableseasonsinschoolhis-tory, adding another A-10 Championship to hisrésumé. The Hawks, led by seniors LangstonGalloway, Halil Kanacevic and Ronald Roberts, Jr.,won20of26games frommid-Decemberand cap-turedtheschool’sthirdconferencetitleanditsfirstsince1997.SJUwent24-10andreachedtheNCAATournamentforthesixthtimeunderMartelli,fallingtoeventualchampionConnecticut.

The 2012-13 season saw an experienced SaintJoseph’s squad reach the Atlantic 10 QuarterfinalsandearnasecondconsecutiveNIT bid,forthe11thpostseasonberthinMartelli’scareer.

In2011-12,MartelliandtheHawksbecameoneof nine teams in thenation towin 20 games afterlosing20thepreviousseason,andalsoreturnedtothepostseasonwithanNIT bid.Fivedifferentplay-ers received Atlantic 10 honors, themost ever forthe Hawks. SJU also scored twowins over Top 25teams(CreightonandTemple)andMartellibecameSJU’sall-timeleaderinvictories.

Martelli guided young squads in 2010-11 and2009-10,aftercomingoffa2008-09seasonthatsaw

theHawksgo17-15forhisninthconsecutive winning season.Among the highlights of ‘08-09was Ahmad Nivins becomingthethirdHawkinsixyearsto garner the Atlantic 10’sPlayeroftheYearAward.Nivinswas also chosen by the DallasMavericks in the 2009 NBADraft, becoming the thirdMartelliplayerdrafted.

The 2007-08 Hawksreached the Atlantic 10Championship game for thethird time in four years andearned the program’s 19th bidto the NCAA Tournament, andMartelli’sfifth.The11th-seededHawks fell to sixth-seededOklahoma in the NCAA FirstRound,whileendingtheyearat21-13.

Martelli turned in anothertop-notch coaching perform-ance in 2005-06, as the Hawkswentfroma10-12recordtowineight consecutive games toreach the Atlantic 10 champi-onship game for the secondyear in a row. SJU earned itssixth consecutive postseasonbidtotheNIT.

In2004-05,Martelliturnedin perhaps a more remarkablecoaching job than in 2003-04when he was the consensus

National Coach of the Year. Facedwith the loss oftwoNBAfirst-rounddraftpicks,MartelliguidedSJUto21winsinthecalendaryearof2005toposta24-12 record. In 2003-04, Martelli guided a focused andunselfish squad that became the most compellingstory in college basketball. The Hawkswent unde-featedintheregularseason,reachedthepinnacleasthe top-ranked team in thenation and earned theschool’s first-ever number-one seed in the NCAATournament, while advancing to the Elite Eight.JameerNelsonwastheconsensusNationalPlayerofthe Year and with teammate Delonte West, wereboth first-round selections in the NBA Draft. SJUopened the season ranked 12th in the polls andmovedupthroughouttheyear,takingthetopspotonMarch8,2004,forthefirsttimeever,whilefin-ishingfifthinthepolls,forSJU’shighestfinalrankingsince1966.

MartellijoinedwithNelsontosweepthenationalcoach and player awards, marking one of the fewtimesinhistorythatthetopplayerandcoachwerefrom the same school.Hewas also theAtlantic 10Coach of the Year for the third time and a repeatwinneroftheBig5CoachoftheYearaward.A 1976 graduate ofWidener, Martelli began his

career on Hawk Hill with SJU's 1985-86 NCAATournamentteam.After10yearsasanassistantatSaintJoseph’s,Martelliwasnamedthe14thcoachinschool history on July 20, 1995, and just the thirdnon-alumnustotoguideSJU.

Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season(1995-96) and took the squad to the NIT champi-onshipgame.Hefollowedthat in1996-97withtheAtlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles,alongwithaberthintheNCAA Sweet16.

Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent sevenyears as head basketball coach at Bishop KenrickHigh School and had a stint as assistant coach atWidener, helping guide the Pioneers to the 1978NCAADivisionIIIFinalFour.

AsapointguardatWidener,hewaspartof theNCAATournamentteamsin1975and1976,andsettheschool'ssingleseasonandcareerassistmarks.

Martelli and his wife, Judy, a former basketballplayer with the national champion ImmaculataCollege teams in the 1970s, have three children -Phil, Jr., Jimmy and Elizabeth. TheHawkisbestknownforstayinginconstantmotionbyflappingitswingsthroughouteverybas-ketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’smotto,“TheHawkWillNeverDie”.

TheideafortheHawkasamascotwasoriginat-ed by Jim Brennan during the 1954-55 season.Brennan,anex-MarineandSJUcheerleader,atfirstwantedtosecureanactualhawk,butlaterswitchedto the costume idea. The student governmentraisedthe120dollarsneededtobuytheinitialcos-tume,whichBrennandonnedforthreeyears.HemadehisdebutastheHawkonJanuary4,1956,a69-56winoverLaSalleatthePalestra.TheHawkhasnotmissedamen’sbasketballgamesincethatfirstseason.

Inadditiontotheconstantflapping,theHawkisalsorecognizedbyits“flying”infigureeightsaroundthecourtduringtimeouts.Theconstantmotion,coupledwiththe scrappyplayof theUniversity’sathletic teams,helped to spawn the school’sfamiliarslogan“TheHawkWillNeverDie!”Afewyearsago,ESPNuseda“flap-o-meter”onthenationaltelecastofaSaintJoseph’sgametoestimatethattheHawkflapsitswings3,500timesduringaregulationgame.

TheHawkisuniquebecauseitisoneofthefewmascotsinthenationthattravelstoeverygame,andthestudentwhoholdsthepositiongainsatuitionscholarship.Thestudent,whoisselectedthroughaninterviewprocessduringthepreviousspringsemester,alsoservesasateammanagerforthemen’sbasketballteamandtravelswiththesquad.
