FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR

FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR

FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR

Dear friends in Christ, This weekend we observe the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This event happened the 40th Day after the Resurrection and in many places is still observed on that day: Ascension Thursday but in most plac-es in the United Stations, it is now observed on the following Sunday. A few years ago, Pope Benedict preached in Poland on the mystery of the Ascension and the question asked by the Angel as our Lord as-cended into heaven: Today ...we hear once again this question from the Acts of the Apostles. This time it is directed to all of us: “Why do you stand looking up to heaven?” The answer to this question involves the fundamental truth about the life and destiny of every man and woman. The question has to do with our attitude to two basic realities which shape every human life: earth and heav-en. First, the earth: “Why do you stand?” - Why are you here on earth? Our answer is that we are here on earth because our Maker has put us here as the crowning work of his creation. Almighty God, in his ineffable plan of love, created the universe, bringing it forth from nothing. Then, at the completion of this work, he be-stowed life on men and women, creating them in his own image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:26-27). He gave them the dignity of being children of God and the gift of immortality. We know that man went astray, misused the gift of freedom and said “No” to God, thus condemning himself to a life marked by evil, sin, suffering and death. But we also know that God was not resigned to this situation, but entered directly into humanity’s his-tory, which then became a history of salvation. “We stand” on the earth, we are rooted in the earth and we grow from it. Here we do good in the many areas of everyday life, in the material and spiritual realms, in our relationships with other people, in our efforts to build up the human community and in culture. Here too we experience the weariness of those who make their way towards a goal by long and winding paths, amid hesi-tations, tensions, uncertainties, in the conviction that the journey will one day come to an end. That is when the question arises: Is this all there is? Is this earth on which “we stand” our final destiny? And so we need to turn to the second part of the biblical question: “Why do you stand looking up to heaven?” We have read that, just as the Apostles were asking the Risen Lord about the restoration of Israel’s earthly kingdom, “He was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.” And “they looked up to heaven as he went” (cf. Acts 1:9-10). They looked up to heaven because they looked to Jesus Christ, the Crucified and Ris-en One, raised up on high. We do not know whether at that precise moment they realized that a magnificent, infinite horizon was opening up before their eyes: the ultimate goal of our earthly pilgrimage. Perhaps they only realized this at Pentecost, in the light of the Holy Spirit. But for us, at a distance of two thousand years, the meaning of that event is quite clear. Here on earth, we are called to look up to heaven, to turn our minds and hearts to the inexpressible mystery of God. We are called to look towards this divine reality, to which we have been directed from our creation. For there we find life’s ultimate meaning. POPE BENEDICT May God bless you and your family in every way! Fr. Johnson

SOCIAL JUSTICE

FINDING GOD IN ALL THINGS

In the first reading the followers of Jesus look up to heaven. The angels ask them “Why?” It is as

if they are saying: “Why don’t you just look around and then maybe you will see the Christ?” Look around and you will see the presence of Christ. Look around and you will hear the call of God. Look around and you will know the power of the Spirit. Look around and you will be empowered. Look around and you will be filled with joy. You will be involved in the struggle for justice and peace. You will hear the voice of God among the poor and needy of the world. You will hear God speak in the struggle for peace and justice. You will see God in the goodness and faith of people You will see God in those who struggle to do what is right and good. You will be led into life and grace. God dwells in the world.

PRAYER FOR THE VOICES OF WOMEN

AND GIRLS

"I had two options. One was to remain silent

and never to speak and then to be killed by the terrorists.

The second option was to speak up for my rights and then die.

And I chose the second one." ~Malala Yousafzai

We pray in thanksgiving for all the voices Of women and girls who have spoken out Against injustice, against violence, Against all that damages the common good. We pray in thanksgiving for all the voices Of women and girls who have spoken out For solidarity, for those at the margins, For authentic peace. Their words still echo in the air, Calling us to continue the struggle. We pray in thanksgiving for all the voices Of women and girls who are speaking out today, Reminding us that we have come so far Through working together with compassion, Joy and commitment; Offering new visions of the common good, New paths that can be taken To heal this world. We pray also for all the women and girls Whose voices are still silenced By discrimination, by fear, by violence. Let us, who can speak, be bold In creating the words, the language Of justice in our time So that all may find their voice, and flourish, And contribute to the common good. Bless our voices as we continue To raise them in thanksgiving For what has been given, And in prayerful advocacy For those still in silence. - Jane Deren, Ph.D.

“We realize the importance of our voices when we are silenced.”

~Malala Yousafzai

Did you know that you can give to St. Jude via your IRA?

Charitable giving using your IRA can have tax advantages. While the reason for giving is to gratefully return to God a share of what God has given us, we also can be smart about our giving. For those over 70 1/2 who take the standard deduction, there is a great advantage to doing a charitable rollover out of your IRA. Your gift counts as part of your minimum distribution and your gift reduces your adjusted gross income, which reduces your taxes.

More families have been taking advantage of this option.

If you have questions please contact Krista Schafer our Business Manager at [email protected]

or 425-883-7685.
