13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 4

Dear Friends in Christ: Hospitality is the theme of the Scripture readings at Mass on this 13

th

Sunday in Ordinary Time. At Mass, in our First Reading from the Second Book of Kings we hear the beautiful story of the couple who welcomed the Prophet Elisha to stay with them. As a result of their sincere hospitality they were rewarded with the gift of a son, a sign of how important hospitality is in the eyes of God. From the 10

th chapter of Saint Matthew’s Gospel that we hear at

Mass today, we are reminded of all the small ways of giving and caring. Even a trivial act of kindness, like giving a cup of cold water to a stranger,

will find God’s favor and result in a great blessing. The world in which we live is in such need of small acts of kindness, which cost us so

very little when we stop to think about it – a smile, a word of appreciation to the cashier at the stores where we shop, or a phone call to a neighbor. By extending hospitality we are following in the footsteps of Jesus himself who has room in his heart for everyone. Following Jesus means putting his way of life into practice in our lives. Hospitality means showing a generosity of heart and a willingness to interrupt our personal lives by ensuring we practice random acts of kindness – because it is not what is given that counts – but the spirit of the heart by which it is given. In these ways we respond to the compelling call of Jesus for us to be his disciples and allow his life-giving Word to be the guiding force that fills all our days.

“All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ… All humility should be shown in addressing a guest...

Great care and concern are to be shown in receiving poor people and pilgrims

because in them more particularly Christ is received.”

Parish News

Annual Diocesan Parish Share Campaign for 2020 Our annual Parish Share Campaign began March 1st for the current 2020 calendar year. The Parish

Share Program supports the needs of older adults and the less fortunate: Catholic Charities, Roselia Center and Mon Valley Social Services are among the many social programs that receive support through Parish Share. In addition, your contribution provides a vital role in helping more than 85,000 young Catholics receive a firm grounding in their faith through parish based religious education programs as well as through campus and youth ministry, helping to bolster the spiritual development of young adult Catholics. Supporting Parish Share promotes new vocations to the priesthood and religious life, provides for the continuing spiritual and educational formation of our current diocesan priests, and the care of retired priests who have given their lives in service to us.

Parish Share also helps in educating parishioners on pro-life issues, counseling women and teenagers in crisis, and reaching out to women and men suffering from the trauma of abortion. In all, Parish Share helps parishes achieve things they cannot do on their own. Your contribution helps to provide our parishes with property planning and insurance expertise, legal and judicial counsel, stewardship and development services, financial and auditing services that allow the parish to serve you better.

The assessment as issued by the Diocese of Pittsburgh for

Saint Katharine Drexel Parish in 2020 is $83,086.00.

Our Parish Share assessment for the parish continues to increase as does the cost of living. This year, each household is asked to please consider a pledge of $350.00 to the Parish Share Program for 2020 that can be payable over the course of the year ($100.00 as the initial gift plus a monthly gift of $25.00 over the next ten months). You are asked to be as generous as you are able according to your means.

For the 2020 Parish Share Campaign contribution, plan to use the bright pink colored envelope in your monthly offertory envelope packet, or you may place your gift in an envelope and drop it in the regular collection at weekend Masses the churches where you participate in Mass. You may also send it via U.S. mail in care of the administration center office, or you may drop it off at the parish office during regular business hours. May God abundantly bless you for your generosity!

New Opportunity for Adult Formation—Opening the Word

All adults are invited to join our weekly online Scripture Sharing Group via Zoom web meet-

ing, or you may choose to participate by using the study guide independently at home! We

meet live each Sunday evening from 7:00 – 8:15 PM as we share and pray together using each

week’s Sunday Readings. Weekly attendance is not mandatory. For more information, or to

register, please contact Deb Augustine at [email protected] or 724-209-1370 (ext.

412). Please leave your name, email address and phone number, and Deb will contact you so you may join the group

as soon as possible. (Materials and videos are provided by the Augustine Institute through FORMED.org.)

Catechists Needed for LIFT Program Make a difference in the lives of our children— share our Catholic faith as a catechist! Our intergenerational and family-centered catechesis program entitled L.I.F.T. (Living In Faith Together) will begin meeting this fall using a web-based meeting format, due to coronavirus safety concerns. Currently, we are seeking persons who have been catechists in the past, or who have a desire to be trained to teach our 6th and 7th-Graders, team-teach 3rd-Graders or who are able to make themselves available as a substitute catechist as needed. The children attend a session once per month, and follow up with parents and students would also be required at times during the remainder of each month. We also have monthly planning meetings which take place usually on a Monday evening. You will receive all the training and support needed by Deb Augustine, Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation. Please contact her at 724-209-1370 (ext. 412) or at [email protected] for more info.

Notification Regarding Alteration of Weekend Mass Schedule for

Saint Katharine Drexel Parish

On May 26, 2020, Father Don Chortos, Senior Parochial Vicar at Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, as a result of advanced age and multiple underlying health concerns, and following consultation with his physicians and prayerful discernment, wrote a letter to Bishop Zubik seeking permission to retire from active priestly ministry. At his request, Father Don will not celebrate any Masses nor any sacraments publicly.

The reality of this decision means that ONE priest is now expected to serve the parish by celebrating regularly scheduled weekday and weekend Masses, in addition to the Sacraments of Penance, Baptism, Wedding Masses and Funeral Masses, along with emergency calls to homes of parishioners for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, as well as emergency calls for this Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at Washington Hospital, Uniontown Hospital, Mon Valley Hospital and multiple health care facilities, along with all the administrative and additional pastoral responsibilities. Father Ed is doing his best to serve these needs, but also it is recognized that four weekend Masses are NOT filling our churches as was originally expected. This is an unreasonable schedule of ministry expectation on the weekend, especially with the 5.1 mile distance between our church buildings, travel time to fulfill all these responsibilities and so much more.

On Monday, Jun 1, 2020, the Pastoral Council met to consider Mass Attendance data collected to date. The council members reviewed closely the number of recorded participants from each parish weekend Mass from March 2019 through March 2020, engaged in discussing feedback and suggestions of parishioners, and also reviewed the Guidelines from the Diocese of Pittsburgh for the Scheduling of Eucharistic Liturgies. These guidelines state that attendance at weekend Masses is to exceed at least 50% of the church seating capacity. Additionally, it is Diocesan Policy that a parish may schedule only ONE Saturday Vigil Mass. [Saint Katharine Drexel Parish was given permission by the Regional Vicar to celebrate two Saturday Vigil Masses as it had two full time priests at the time]. It is clear from the data reviewed that the current 6:00 PM Saturday Mass at the Richeyville Mission Church consistently, over the past year (March 2019 through March 2020), is far less attended than all the other Masses. On every occasion, attendance at this Mass is always less than 50% of the total seating capacity of the church building.

All Pastoral Council members expressed that there are three other weekend Masses from which to choose and participate, and currently none of them are at full seating capacity. Reducing the weekend Mass schedule to three Masses will allow fuller churches to assist in the goal of fostering good liturgy and build up the spirit and sense of community among the parish.

With all these considerations in mind and through gathering of data, careful review and prayerful discernment of what is reasonable and feasible, the Pastoral Council members recommend that the weekend Mass schedule be altered according to the following new schedule:

Saturday, 4:00 PM Mass at the Bentleyville Main Church

+

Sunday, 9:00 AM Mass at the Richeyville Mission Church

+

Sunday, 11:00 AM Mass at the Bentleyville Main Church

Father Ed has accepted this recommendation, and will be writing the Regional Vicar for permission to begin this new weekend Mass schedule on the weekend of July 4/5, 2020. The efforts in combining the weekend Mass schedule should aid in the attempt to continually strengthen and provide good and uplifting celebrations of weekend Masses with more people.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support of the collaborative efforts to realistically envision ministry, with one priest now serving our parish.

If you have any questions or concerns, please write Father Ed:
