THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Twenty-Fourth in Ordinary Time, the Scriptural read-ings begin with a passage from the Book of Sirach where he points out the burden of hatred and anger. In the sec-ond reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds us of the communal nature of our life in Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of forgiveness. OUR CHURCH’S FIRST BIRTHDAY: Our church was dedicated on Sunday, September 25, 2016. Our Catholic liturgical tradition sees a church as a living reality. There-fore, in the calendar of each church there is a kind of “birthday” celebration called the Anniversary of the Dedi-cation of the Church. It is a solemnity in the dedicated church, and the twelve dedication crosses are lit only on that anniversary day. Monday, September 25th, Saint Kilian Parish will celebrate the anniversary of the dedica-tion of our church. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with the entire Catholic school and parishioners are wel-come. An additional Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Please consider joining other parishioners for a joyful celebration of our church and its meaning in our lives and worship. THANKS: We are grateful to Fr. Michael Ackerman and the seminarians from Saint Paul Seminary who joined us last Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. and Noon Masses. Their presence and witness was a hopeful and moving moment for our parish. Thanks to our local council of the Knights of Columbus who assisted with providing donuts and cof-fee after the 10:00 am Mass for those who went down-stairs to meet the seminarians.

FATHER ROBERT F. GUAY: Father Robert F. Guay is currently the Regional Vicar for Vicariate One within the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This challenging assign-ment (and several others in his years as a priest) has proven his abilities and love for the Church. Bishop Zubik has given Fr. Guay permission to retire as of September 21, 2017. Father Guay will be taking up residence in the old rectory in Mars. He will assist in celebrating sacraments and pastoral activity as his per-sonal schedule permits. Please welcome him to our parish when you meet him.

HURRICANE RELIEF: Thanks to all who contributed to the hurricane relief appeal last weekend. Your generosity amounted to $18,098.33. This money will be sent to Catholic Charities USA (together with the generosity of other parishes in the Diocese). It will quickly find its way to communities and parishes in every affected area. Your generosity will do much good for those trying to rebuild their lives and commu-nities.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS! We would like to reach out to your son/daughter. We want to let them know we are thinking of them and praying for them! Please submit addresses for College students to receive packages ASAP! SKY members will assemble the packages and they will be mailed out in early October. ALL names & addresses are due by Wednesday, September 20th. Please email addresses to Deacon Bob at [email protected] or call/text Tina at 724-968-6452. To donate items for this event or to contribute towards postage, please contact Dea-con Bob or Tina.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Our readings and music focus, once again, on rela-tionships and forgiveness toward each other. The core of this Sunday’s responsorial psalm is its refrain: “The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.” This phrase was first spoken not about God but by God as direct revelation to Moses: this is my name – Lord – and this is who I am – mer-ciful, gracious, compassionate (Exodus 34: 5-6). The phrase appears so often in the Old Testament that it is called “the little creed”, a capsule profession of who God is and how God relates to us. In singing this psalm we profess “the little creed” as our own. We are to forgive one another no matter how great or small the debt and no matter how many times it is necessary. The call is mandatory, not optional. May our singing of this psalm transform our hearts and our behavior.

Our choirs will minister at the following masses:

Devoto Bell Choir October 22nd 12:00 pm Children’s Choir September 17th 10:00 am October 1st 12:00 pm Adult Choir September 17th 12:00 pm September 24th 10:00 am

If you would like more information regarding Music Ministry at Saint Kilian Parish, please contact David Dreher at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x 2113.

Diocesan officials met with the pastors of southwest Butler County and northwest Allegheny County. At that time, the Pastors recommend not establishing a brand new parish in Cranberry but rather redrawing the boundaries of St. Kilian Parish to include new territory (from Saint Ferdinand Parish). On June 19,

2001, Bishop Wuerl issued a canonical decree altering those boundaries effective January 6, 2002. (Appendix I). On July 2, 2001, Bishop Wuerl appointed Father Charles S. Bober as Pastor of St. Kilian Parish with the specific responsibility of preparing the people and the parish for the alteration of the parish boundaries, which would take place in six months. At the same time, he gave permission for Father John Rebel to begin a six-month sabbatical affording him an opportunity to study in Rome, Italy. On July 2, 2001, Saint Kilian Parish thanked Father Rebel for his nineteen years of ministry as its pastor. On July 2, 2001, Father Charles Bober became pastor of Saint Kilian Parish. On January 6, 2002, St. Kilian Parish’s new boundaries become effec-tive and the 500 families of the Saint Kilian were joined by 1,200 additional families. Fifteen years later (as of September 12, 2017) Saint Kilian is a parish of 11,820 people and 3,565 families.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? For adults, the usual way to become a member of the Catholic Church is through the Rite of Christian Initia-tion of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA is a gradual process of education and formation for those unbaptized, baptized in another Christian denomination, or baptized Catholic but who have not received other sacraments or for-mation in the faith. The RCIA program helps adults to grow in their relationship with God. Sessions will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in Meeting Room C in the lower level of the Church. An inquiry session to find out more about the RCIA pro-cess will be held on Monday, September 18th at 6:30 pm in Meeting Room C. Classes for RCIA will begin October 2nd and will meet on a regular basis on Mon-day evenings. Contact Deacon Ralph Bachner at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x2103 for more information or to sign up for the RCIA.

In 8th grade Social Studies, the year began with reviewing key topics from American history before the Civil War. Each student selected a topic of their choice, such as The Revolutionary War or The Monroe Doctrine, and created a one page poster describing and analyzing the event. These posters are now on displayed outside of Mr. Hampe's classroom where they serve as a timeline of this time period. Currently, we are learning about the various compromises and indi-viduals whose actions foreshadow the start of the Civil War. Next week, students will be writing editorials about the at-tack on Lawrence from pro-slavery and antislavery perspectives and looking at different opinions of the Dred Scott deci-sion. The year is off to a great start! In Science, we started out the year with a few hands on experiments to review the scientific method. The students used water, soap and pennies to answer the question: How does soap affect the surface tension of water? The students are also learning about the fundamentals of chemistry and the general properties of matter. We will end the chapter differen-tiating between physical and chemical properties of matter. In Algebra, students just finished a chapter about algebraic expressions. Students used order of operations to simplify these problems. Next, students will be learning about equations and how to solve them. Students will solve equations that will take one or more steps. To finish out the chapter, students will work on proportions and percentages. Finally, our eighth graders have begun the process of becoming candidates for Confirmation. They begin preparing through acts of service and a service project. All are actively pursuing opportunities to enrich their faith as they become adults within our faith community.

Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, by calling the parish office @ 724.625.1665 X2108…We want to help! God bless and thank-you for your continued generosity and support.
