Faith and a Time of AgnosticismWhy does our generation struggle with faith?

Martin Heidegger once gave this answer: “We are too latefor the gods and too early for Being.”

What does he mean by that? First, quite simply that less andless people today have faith in the old way. The gods arereceding, as any look around the Western world will tell you.But Heidegger has something else in mind too, namely, thereason the gods are receding is that we don’t have the samefears our ancestors once had. Belief in God, he feels, ispredicated on a certain fear and astonishment. Formergenerations, much more than we, felt their vulnerability, mortality, and helplessness in the face of energies andforces beyond them. Because of that, they looked for apower outside of themselves, God, to help them. Fear, amongother things, made them believe in God.

And they, of necessity, feared many things: plagues thatcould come at a whim and wipe out whole populations, illnesses for which there was no cure, natural disastersagainst which there was no defence, hunger as an ever-present threat, and even the normal process of childbirth aspotentially ending a woman’s life. There were no antibioticsor sophisticated medications or procedures to prolong life,no vaccinations, none of the things we have that make usless vulnerable to whim, nature, disease. Beyond this, theyalso lived with the fears that came from superstition, fromlack of knowledge and of science. There were dark powers, they believed, that could curse you, bring bad luck, kill you. Many things were to be feared. This kind of vulnerabilityhelps induce faith.

More positively, though, this vulnerability brought with it thecapacity to be astonished. Before a universe that holds somany mysteries – thunder, lightning, the stars, the changingseasons, the process of conception, and the simpleinexplicable fact that the sun rises and sets every day – thereis cause for healthy astonishment, for holy fear, and there isthe constant reminder of our littleness and the fact that lifecannot be taken for granted.

Today, of course, we have few of these fears. We have faithin medicine, rationality, science, and in what we, humanity, can do for ourselves. As for astonishment before the powerof nature? The weather channel has demythologized that.

Much of this, in fact, is good in terms of God and faith.Fear is not a good motive for religion, but rather theantithesis of true religion (whose task it is to cast out fear).Mature faith must take its roots in love and gratitude, notfear. Thus, freedom from false fear holds a rich potentialfor a maturer faith and religion.

Nonetheless, for now at least, we don’t seem to beactualizing that potential. There is less and less consciousfaith. Ordinary consciousness, at least in the Westernworld, is agnostic and even atheistic. We don’t seem tofeel a need for God and, consequently, the transcendentis slowly receding. We’re too late for the gods.

Moreover, as Heidegger adds, we’re also “too early forBeing.” What does this add?

For Heidegger, we’ve lost many of our old fears andsuperstitions, but aren’t necessarily more mature andunderstanding because of it. We’ve moved beyond the oldsense of helplessness, vulnerability, and mortality, withoutrecognizing the new helplessness, vulnerability, and mortaldanger within which we live. Like a child, sauntering alonga dangerous ledge but blissfully unaware that he or she isone slip away from serious injury or death, so too are wein our new-found sense of confidence and fearlessness:We think ourselves invulnerable, but are only one doctor’svisit, chest pains, or a terrorist attack away from a fearfulreminder of our own vulnerability. We aren’t immortal afterall.

But this is not our real helplessness. Fearing for ourphysical health and safety is not the kind of vulnerabilitythat today opens up a place for God in our lives. Thescary ledge we walk along and are in constant danger offalling off has to do with the heart and its illnesses anddeaths. More than our bodies, our souls are menacedtoday: We’re all one slip away from a broken heart, abroken family, a broken marriage, a broken life, the loss ofa loved one, a betrayal in love, the bitterness of an oldfriend, the jealousy of a colleague, a coldness of heartwithin, an anger which won’t let go, a wound too deep forforgiveness, and a family, community, church, and worldthat cannot reconcile. Self-sufficiency is always anillusion, most especially today.

We need God as much as did our ancestors. We justdon’t know it as clearly. Nothing has changed. We stillstand in radical insecurity before energies and powersbeyond us, storms of the heart, no less frightening thanthe storms of nature. We’re no less helpless, vulnerable, mortal, or fearful than the people of old and need God asmuch as they did, only for different reasons.

LIVE THE LITURGY -INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

We all struggle with the illusion that happiness is found in ourpossessions. God constantly reminds us that we will never findhappiness through the possession of earthly things but only inthe things of heaven, the things that matter to God. Whatmatters to God? Care for the poor, the widow, and themarginalized; pursuing love at all costs; and raising our thoughtsto what is above are the things that matter to God.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Take care to guard against all greed, forthough one may be rich, one’s life does not consist ofpossessions.” This isn’t a message that gets muchadvertising. On the contrary, just about every adver-tised message we hear comes from someone who wantsto make money by selling us possessions. The messagewe hear loud and clear on television or Internet ads oron highway billboards or the back cover of magazinesis that we need this product or that service in order tobe happy. Professional marketers are in the business ofcreating a supposed need and then promising to fill itwith their product. In today’s culture, it’s hard toremember that life isn’t about possessions.

But in this Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there ismore to life than having “so many good things storedup for many years.” All of this stuff-be it clothes, devices, equipment, decorations, entertainment centers,or anything else-does no lasting good if and when “thisnight your life will be demanded of you.” Unlike thefool who spends all of his time, energy, and moneybuilding larger barns, we should focus our resources onbecoming “rich in what matters to God.”

This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. Itmeans sharing our money with those in need instead ofhoarding it out of selfish greed. The call is a challeng-ing one, and countercultural too. But Jesus never saidthat the Christian way was the way of the world. As St.Paul instructs us in today’s epistle, “Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly.” Instead of falling forthe marketers’ messages, may we have the wisdom tostore up our treasure in heaven.

mode of summer sun and vacation fun. Unfortunately, hunger exists in all seasons, right here in our owncommunity!

To prevent a summer shortage of food, we are asking for everyones assistance. If each St. Kilian household brought just one of the requested items each week, it would help us feed 400-500people every month! Just drop your donation in the bin in the gathering space of the church or bring it to

The best SKY memory I have is when we did Relay -4- Life in June to raise money for the AmericanCancer Society. I really enjoyed it because we did itfrom 5pm to 5 am and we walked and had funspending time with each other!!! During the eventwe had “lighting the candles ceremony” for peoplewho survived cancer or passed away from cancer. It looked beautiful and we remembered loved ones.During the event we had lots of food, walked, played football, played our devices and listened tomusic. When we were tired we went to the tent, Islept for 3 hours, Overall, this event supported agreat cause and was also fun!!! John S.

Wills and Bequests have the powerto impact future generations. It’s so easy to includeour Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest by adding thefollowing language:

“I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of),to be used for the general program of (parish name here),a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”

Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitablebequest or consider other Estate Planning options, such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a

life insurance policy or an IRA account.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich manwho selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to dieand not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggleall our lives to learn is that life does not consist of posses-sions nor our perceived security, but of being possessedby God.

In the month of July, through your gifts, theSociety of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assistfamilies in our parish.

Parking for the disabledWe have limited parking for thedisabled at St. Kilian’s. Please becareful to park in areas open toall, and not in handicappedparking spots.

To receive a brochure about Wills and Bequests, please call Barbara Kilarjian at 516-678-5800 ext. 257

“Go out to all the world and tell the goodnews!” Joining a Catholic parish like St.

Kilian’s, means participating in the work of the local church.Where is the Lord calling me, inspired by the Spirit given tome in baptism, to build the kingdom of God? Is the Lordcalling me to minister in the parish outreach efforts of St.Kilian? Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving drinkto the thirsty-staffing the food pantry, driving folks todoctor’s appointments, assisting immigrants in theiradjustment to society in a new land, advising and givingcounsel.... Or is the Lord calling me to hand on the faith inthe parish religious education programs? Am I called toprepare young people for their first holy Communion or thesacrament of reconciliation (confession) with the sacramentof confirmation? Do I hear the Lord calling my name tobring holy Communion to the sick or to assist in thedistribution of the Eucharist at Sunday and weekdaymasses... Or proclaiming the word of God as a lector... Orassisting in the taking up of the offertory collection to assistthe work of the church as an usher? Is the Lord urging meto use my voice to proclaim God’s praises as a leader ofsong or a member of one of the parish choirs? Do I feel thatI have been given gifts to console the grieving, comfort thebereaved as a minister of consolation? Am I being called toassist engaged couples in their journey toward the sacramentof matrimony? Have I been called to give witness to theimportance of the sacrament of baptism in our parishpreparation programs to young couples with newbornbabies?

President John F. Kennedy famously asked ournation: “Ask not what your country can do for you, butwhat you can do for your country.” As baptized Catholics,we register in the parish to become fully engaged in thework of the local church. We do not register to getsomething for ourselves, but to give ourselves away in lovefor Christ and God’s people.

The Catholic Church, St. Kilian Church has doorsopen to all. We receive our sacraments here; participate atmass, and live the gospel. St. Kilian’s is our parish. It is ourhome. It will be as warm and wonderful, as caring andunderstanding, as welcoming and invitational, as you and Iare.

Register for a ministry! Be a good steward; acaretaker of all that Christ has entrusted to you. Ministry isnot an option, but a responsibility. All baptized believers, byvirtue of our baptism are to spend our lives proclaiming thelove of Christ by our words and actions. How will the Lorduse you as his instrument?

Come to the Eucharist weekly. By our participationat mass, the high point of our week and of our lives, we areenergized by the power of God; and in our sharing in theBody and Blood of Christ, we are transformed to live asChrist lived.

Register by calling the rectory at (516)249-0127 orgo www.stkilian.com to register on-line.

¿Has pensado en ello?
