In a recent interview for the Argentine weekly, Viva,Pope Francis weighs in on this topic, submitting his own“Top 10 Tips” for happiness. What are Pope Francis’ tipsfor happiness or, as he puts it, “for bringing greater joy toone’s life”? In presenting these, I will be faithful to hiscaptions but, because his commentary on each one wasrather lengthy, I will risk synthesizing his central point inmy own words:1. Live and let live.

All of us will live longer and more happily if we stop trying toarrange other peoples’ lives. Jesus challenged us not to judgebut to live with the tension and let God and history make thejudgments. So live we need to live by own convictions and letothers do the same.

2. Be giving of yourself to others.

Happiness lies in giving ourselves away. We need to be openand generous because if we withdraw into ourselves we runthe risk of becoming self-centered and no happiness will befound there since “stagnant water becomes putrid.”

3. Proceed calmly.Move with kindness, humility, and calm. These are theantithesis of anxiety and distress. Calm never causes highblood pressure. We need to make conscious efforts to neverlet the moment cause panic and excessive hurry. Rather belate than stressed.4. A healthy sense of leisure.Never lose the pleasures of art, literature, and playing withchildren. Remember that Jesus scandalized others with hiscapacity to enjoy life in all its sensuousness. We don’t live bywork alone, no matter how important and meaningful it mightbe. In heaven there will be no work, only leisure, we need tolearn the art and joy of leisure not just to prepare for heavenbut to enjoy some of heaven already now.5. Sundays should be holidays.Workers should have Sundays off because Sunday is forfamily. Accomplishment, productivity, and speed may notbecome our most valued commodities or we will begin to takeeverything for granted, our lives, our health, our families, ourfriends, those around us, and all the good things in life. That

Ronald Rolheiser, a Roman Catholicpriest and member of theMissionary Oblates of MaryImmaculate, is president of theOblate School of Theology in SanAntonio, Texas.

is why God gave us a commandment to keep the Sabbathholy. This is not a lifestyle suggestion, but a commandmentas binding as not killing. Moreover, if we are employers, the commandment demands too that we give ouremployees proper Sabbath-time.

6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs foryoung people. If you want to bless a young person, don’t just tell thatperson that he or she is wonderful. Don’t just admireyouthful beauty and energy. Give a young person your job!Or, at least, work actively to help him or her findmeaningful work. This will both bless that young personand bring a special happiness to your own life.7. Respect and take care of nature. The air we breathe out is the air we will re-inhale. This istrue spiritually, psychologically, and ecologically. We can’tbe whole and happy when Mother Earth is being strippedof her wholeness. Christ came to save the world, not justthe people in the world. Our salvation, like our happiness,is tied to the way we treat the earth. It is immoral to slapanother person in the face and so it is immoral too to throwour garbage into the face of Mother Earth.8. Stop being negative.Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. Negative thoughts feed unhappiness and a badself-image. Positive thoughts feed happiness and healthyself-esteem.9. Don’t proselyte, respect others’ beliefs. What we cherish and put our faith into grows “byattraction, not by proselytizing.” Beauty is the one thingthat no one can argue with. Cherish your values, butalways act towards others with graciousness, charity, andrespect.10. Work for peace.Peace is more than the absence of war and working forpeace means more than not causing disharmony. Peace, like war, must be waged actively by working for justice, equality, and an ever-wider inclusivity in terms of whatmakes up our family. Waging peace is the perennialstruggle to stretch hearts, our own and others, to acceptthat in God’s house there are many rooms and that allfaiths, not least our own, are meant to be a house of prayerfor all peoples.

Offered with apologies for whenever my own thinkingreplaced that of Pope Francis.

JULY 24, 201617th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you willfind; knock and the door will be opened to you.”This is a promise that anyone would love to hear. With these words Jesus comforts and reassures us.He suggests that we will be satisfied and welcomedand fulfilled. His message in today’s Gospel assuresus that our heavenly Father loves us even more thanearthly parents love their children. So we can enjoythe security of knowing that God will take good careof us.

But God’s care may not always look exactlythe way we expect it to. His care for us is based onknowing what is best for us and what will make usflourish. And, sometimes, what we think we needisn’t really best. It’s important to keep this contextin mind. This prevents us from understanding Jesus’words today in a selfish way. As the end of thepassage makes clear, this asking and seeking thatJesus refers to is ultimately fulfilled in the gift of theHoly Spirit. Jesus is promising us that if we ask Godfor his Spirit, he will certainly give it to us, hischildren.

For most of us, we actually received this giftat our baptism. But have we taken full advantage ofthis? Although we may not realize it at first, inreceiving the Holy Spirit we actually receive awhole host of gifts. With God’s Spirit come thesevenfold gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. And the fruits of the Spirit as St. Paul lists them inGalatians 5 include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, andself-control. God knows that all of these gifts andfruits make us very well equipped for life on earth, and for eternal life in heaven! What more do wereally need to ask for?

To prevent a summer shortage of food, we are asking for everyones assistance. If each St. Kilian household brought just one of the requested items each week, it would help us feed 400-500people every month! Just drop your donation in the bin in the gathering space of the church or bring it to

LIVE THE LITURGYINSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

The disciples ask Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray just asJohn taught his disciples.” What follows in Jesus’ re-sponse is the very familiar Lord’s Prayer. It reminds usthat God desires private time with us, alone, in our roomsand approaching him with an honesty that is found only inthe most intimate of friends.
