CLOTHING NEEDED: Especially for school-age kids. Now is the time for your entire family to sort through their clothing and fill our 4 brand-new St. Vincent de Paul collection bins. Thank you for helping those in need. SHOES! SHOES! Back to school means in with the new, out with the old. We can give your unwanted (outgrown?) usable and clean shoes a second life for those most in need. Jr. SKY shoe collection night is Sept 22nd, shoes accepted after Sept 10th due to space limitations. Drop off at the front desk or leave in the foyer, ATTN: Jo Scheller. THANK YOU for helping us help others! INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? For adults, the usual way to become a member of the Catholic Church is through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA is a gradual process of education and formation for those unbaptized, baptized in another Chris-tian denomination, or baptized Catholic but who have not received other sacraments or formation in the faith. The RCIA program helps adults to grow in their relationship with God. Sessions will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in Meeting Room C in the lower level of the Church. Our first session is October 8th at 6:30 pm. Contact Deacon Ralph Bachner at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x2103 for more in-formation or to sign up for the RCIA.

THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: The Scriptural readings for this Sunday, the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, begin with a passage from the Book of Joshua where the new leader of Israel demands that the people make a choice. In the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians, Saint Paul likens the spousal relationship with that of Christ and His Church. In the Gospel, Jesus re-minds His disciples that His teachings are challenging and require faith. THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL: This week (and in the coming weeks) our children and youth head back to school. We wish them well in this new academic year and ask for your prayers for them and their teachers, and administrators. Saint Kilian Parish School begins this Monday, August 27th (1st-8th grade). Mass to open the school year will be celebrated in the church at 10:00 a.m. on Monday. Parishioners are welcome to attend the Monday, 10:00 a.m. Mass each Monday. ANOINTING OF THE SICK AT MASS: At the 5:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, September 8, we will also celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Church offers this sacrament for those who are seriously ill, facing surgery, advanced in years and others who would benefit from it. If you would like to be anointed at this Mass, please call the Parish Center (724) 625-1665, ext. 2108 so that we can reserve a seat for you in the front. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT: Losing a loved one is very often a devastating and life changing event. If you have experienced the death of a loved one, Saint Kilian Parish invites you to be part of a nine week pro-gram that offers support, conversation, and comfort. The group will meet weekly from September 18th through November 13th on Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the lower level of Saint Kilian Church. You do not need to be present at every session but may attend as your schedule permits. Our first session, Is This Nor-mal? introduces the GriefShare program and explores why the grief experience may be harder than ex-pected. Contact Deacon Ralph Bachner at 724-625-1665 x2103 or [email protected] to register or for more information. LOSS OF A SPOUSE: This one session, two-hour semi-nar, on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, addresses the challenges that a surviving spouse faces after the loss of their husband or wife. The evening includes a video, dis-cussion and workbook to help in dealing with the effects of grief on one’s physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The seminar will be held in the Church Hall from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Contact Deacon Ralph Bachner at 724-625-1665 x2103 or [email protected] to register or for more information.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Our song at the Preparation of the Gifts, We Will Serve The Lord, is meant to echo the first reading heard from the book of Joshua. David Haas has a beautiful way of blending words and music into a song that is meaningful and thoughtful. We cannot control what others do; we can only control our own household. And so, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”. It’s not too early to start thinking about the beginning of our next choir season. Our Parish Music Ministry depends on all of you! We already have many dedicated volunteers in the various choirs. But there is plenty of room for more! If you enjoy music at our liturgies please consider this valuable and rewarding ministry. For those of you who love to sing, we have opportunities for young and mature voices. If you have ever wanted to ring a bell in our fabulous Bell Choir we have slots for you, too. Below, are listed the various choirs and their start times. We ask for a steady commitment for rehearsals and for scheduled masses usually from September until May. Come join in the fun!

Junior Cantors: rehearsals begin September 6th (weekly) at 5:30 pm (4th-8th grade ages) Children’s Choir: rehearsals begin September 6th (weekly) at 6:00 pm (2nd-8th grade ages) Adult Choir: rehearsals begin September 6th (weekly) at 7:30 pm (high school and older) Devoto Ringers: rehearsals begin September 10th (weekly) at 7:30 pm (high school and older) SKPS Cantors: rehearsals begin September 10th (weekly) at 2:50 pm (4th-8th grade ages)

If you would like more information regarding the Bell Choir, Children’s Choir, Adult Choir or becoming a cantor, please contact David Dreher 724-625-1665 x2113 or email [email protected].

In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks “Do you also want to leave?” We must ask ourselves if we really want to hear the good news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of God able to break into our consciousness, change us and call us to hear the cries of the poor?

This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the poor by disbursing $2,860.64 to help several of our "neighbors in need" secure food, housing, medical care and transportation. Within that total, money was also disbursed to help with funeral expens-es for a family who lost their daughter. May she rest in peace. God Bless You for your continued generosity and support!

If you know of a family in need, please contact the Society by calling the parish office @ 724-625-1665 X2108.

BONFIRE PREP! It’s time to plan for our single biggest event of the year, our opening night BONFIRE BLAST on Saturday, Sept 8th! We average over 200 youth – we need YOUR help to make this a success. We are looking to change things up a bit with a “messy games” finale and so will need extra helping hands. Volunteer spots are now online at www.saintkilian.org/jrskyvol – we need YOU! Adults 18 years and over must have clearances before volunteering.

HIGH SCHOOLERS needing service hours are the BEST kind of help – we love your energy and enthusiasm, and the middle schoolers LOVE you! To volunteer to work the bonfire go to www.saintkilian.org/jrskyvol -- no “walk-in” volunteers will be used since there is no time to explain what is needed in the midst of the fun. Spots are limited, ser-vice hours certificate given. FALL SCHEDULE is now online. We are preparing for a powerful year of ministry, but can’t do it without help! Please consider becoming part of our CORE team of adults, no planning required, just your faith on display, your heart open and your willingness to spend time with youth. You will find yourself growing in faith alongside our amazing young people. For more information, email Jo at [email protected]. ROSECREST *NEW*-- we are now partnering with RoseCrest Assisted Living facility to coordinate a group visit with residents. 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, 4:00-5:00 pm -- Shari Dillon (Activities Coordinator at RoseCrest) will have a simple activity planned for the group. No need to prep or plan activities – the WHOLE family is welcome. Spots are LIMITED so sign-ups are required. Go to www.saintkilian.org/RoseCrest to sign up. NOTE: This is not a Jr. SKY or parish event, and we will not have a staff member present. For questions please email Shari at [email protected]. NURSE? I am looking to add a nurse or someone who can help in case we need to use an epi-pen for one of our youth. This is a free gift of time so I am grateful regardless of whether you can only help one event or many. Email Jo for more information. SHOES, SHOES, SHOES! Please set aside your unwanted, gently used (clean) shoes for our collection on SATUR-DAY, Sept 22nd. Our goal is 2,640 pairs (5,280 feet to represent a mile for our “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” theme). Items may be dropped off at the front desk or left in the foyer at the parish center beginning Monday, Sept 10th or bring with you to Jr. SKY on the 22nd.
