THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the fifth of Lent, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the first Book of the Prophet Ezekiel where he speaks to the people of resurrection and return. In the second reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans, Saint Paul contrasts those who live in the flesh and those who live in the spirit. In the Gospel Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.

THANK YOU: The Knights of Columbus would like to thank all who donated blood last Sunday. Each donation helps three people in need, so your lifesaving gift is greatly appreciated.

OPPORTUNITY FOR CONFESSION DURING LENT: Opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) at Saint Kilian Parish are as scheduled below. RETROUVAILLE - SAVE OUR MARRIAGE: Not willing to let go of your marriage? Many couples continue to struggle in a marriage, but are not willing to give up on each other. There is hope. Retrouvaille is a program designed to help struggling marriages regain their health. It helps a husband and a wife rediscover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing recon-ciliation to couples who have already separated or divorced. Retrouvaille is a peer ministry of volunteer couples that can help you learn the tools of healthy communication, build intimacy and heal, just as they have done in their own marriages. For confidential information about the program, contact Retrouvaille at 412-277-3434. More information is available at http://www.retrouvailleofpittsburghinc.org/ TRAVELING? The complimentary toiletries at hotels are perfect sizes for our collection. Jr. SKY will be assem-bling toiletry kits --we can also use: toothbrushes/paste, washcloths, deodorant and bar soap. Our goal is 200 packs. Drop off at the front desk, ATTN: Jo Scheller. Email [email protected] for more information. THANK YOU for helping our youth practice compassion for others.

MUSIC MINISTRY Psalm 130 is an individual lament arising from some unnamed anguish so profound that the psalmist feels buried in the bowels of the earth. There is some sense that the underlying cause of the anguish, indeed of all human anguish, is sin. If God were to tally our sins, we would never rise from the pit. But because God does not tally sin but forgives it, the psalmist has hope. God’s kindness is greater than Israel’s iniquities; redemption is assured. We only have to wait. And for what do we wait? The redemp-tion not only of our souls but of our bodies, promised metaphorically in the forest reading, foreseen in the future in the second, and experienced here and now in the gospel when Jesus calls Lazarus forth from the tomb. The closer Jesus moves to his own death in Jerusalem, the more clearly he reveals his power over death. The closer we move to Jesus, the more we rise from the pit. In him the mercy of God is made flesh and our hope of redemption is made real. (reprinted from Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN.) Our choirs will be ministering at the following mass: Children’s Choir April 2nd @ 10:00 a.m. April 13th @ 7:00 p.m. Adult Choir April 2nd @ 12:00 p.m. April 9th @ 10:00 a.m. April 13th @ 7:00 p.m. April 14th @ 3:00 p.m. April 15th @ 7:30 p.m.

COURTESY NOTES

PASSION PLAY: St. Alphonsus will present its 15th annual Passion Play – “Make Us Believers” – on Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8, in the Ryan Center at Saint Alphonsus School in Wexford. Friday’s performance will be at 8 p.m. Saturday’s performance at 7 p.m. will be preceded by a 6

p.m. reception with hors d’oeuvres in the lobby of the Ryan Center. All are invited.

Admission is free; freewill offerings are appreciated. Saint Alphonsus School is located at 201 Church Road in Wexford (Pine Township). For information, contact Mary Heagy, music director at [email protected]. GOOD FRIDAY FISH DINNER: St. Wendelin School will once again be hosting a Good Friday Fish Dinner on April 14, 2017 from 3 – 7 p.m. in the church hall, 210 St. Wendelin Road, But-ler. We will be serving baked or fried fish, halushki, cole slaw, rolls, parsley potatoes, desserts and beverages. Cost is $10 for adults and carry-outs, $5 for kids 6-10. Kids 5 years and under are free.

In Science, the students have been learning about heredity and genetics. Our science book begins the unit with a profile of Greg-or Mendel. Mendel, a 19th century Augustine friar from Austria, is considered the Father of Genetics. We are studying Mendel’s experiment, constructing Punnett squares and recessive/dominant alleles. The kids have a lot of questions about what traits are passed down from their parents to them! In Social Studies, we just started a unit on the North and South. We compare them to help see the differences that caused the events that led up to the Civil War. We will also be looking at reforms of the time period and do a short project on the Under-ground Railroad. Miss Kaiser’s math class has been studying Geometry. Students have been identifying and classifying angles, triangles, and oth-er polygons. In future lessons, students will learn about congruent figures, circles, and how to create a circle graphs. Students will utilize the Geometry skills learned throughout this chapter to create their own map of a fictional town as the culminating activity. Recently the seventh grade Religion classes have been living the Word of the Lord through skits. Working in groups they have portrayed parables and miracles based on the Gospels and words of Jesus Christ. Currently they have been focusing on the Sac-raments of Healing: Reconciliation and the Healing of the Sick. There have been discussions about the book and movie, The Shack, with emphasis on God’s abundant love and forgiveness. Connections have been made with the hurts and forgiveness within our community of family and friends as well. Seventh graders previewed some of the Stations of the Cross on our interac-tive whiteboard, mediating and preparing for our participation in these Stations each week at our beautiful church during this Len-ten season. Soon we will be focusing on living the Beatitudes, all in readiness to live like Jesus each and every day. Our 7th grade ELA nonfiction unit has had us reading The Boy on the Wooden Box. It is a memoir written by the youngest person on Schindler’s List, Leon Leyson. It has opened our eyes to a place in our history that is unimaginable. It has given new mean-ing to the word Holocaust. It is so much more than just a tragedy that we learn about in school. We are faced with the fact that these people were real, and they lived and died at the hands of the Nazi Party. They all once walked the earth just like us. We have also been looking at the Diary of Anne Frank to compare two VERY real stories. Two young children, faced the worst that this world could ever offer. “A hero is someone who does the best of things at the worst of times.” ~Leon Leyson
