THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (New Year’s Day), the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the Book of Numbers containing God’s blessing on the people. In the second reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians, we are told of the place of Jesus in God’s plan of salvation. In the Gospel, we are told of the shepherd’s experience of the newborn Savior.

CHRISTMAS THANKS: The pastor, deacons and the entire parish staff offer their thanks to the parishioners for their Christmas greetings and gifts. Your generosity and kindness reaffirm our joy in being able to work with you in this wonderful parish. Thank you. MONDAY, JANUARY 2ND: The Parish Center will be closed on Monday, January 2nd, in observance of the holiday. We will reopen Tuesday morning, January 3rd. SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioners, Judy and Robert Pergl and family, at the death of Judy’s mother, Julia Lazar. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Due to early submission of this week’s bulletin (in observance of the Christmas Holiday) the statistics for last week will be reported in next week's bulletin.

2 CORINTHIANS: Come to know the forceful but loving character of Paul, one of the best known figures in the early Church. No other letter from Paul is so revealing of Paul's personality. Paul likens the ministry of Apostles as that of being ambassadors of God whose message is one of reconciliation. Arguing from his own experience of discipleship and ministry, Paul continues to promote unity in a divided and confused Corinth by reflecting on his own weaknesses as an opportunity to find strength in Christ. He calls the Corinthians to generosity in care for the poor who live outside their own community.

Join the Women’s Bible Study group as they discuss this exciting Bible Study starting January 4th thru February 8th. The Bible Study Group meets Wednesday’s from 9:30-11:30 am in Meet-ing Room C (lower level of the Church). All are welcome! For more information, contact Jean Mentzer at [email protected] or Chris Hespenheide at 724-316-1309

MUSIC MINISTRY

Psalm 67 (the appointed psalm for this Solemnity) was a harvest song in which the Israelites thanked God for all that had been given to them and asked God to Extend this bounty to all peoples. On this Solemnity we celebrate God bringing forth from the flesh of Mary its greatest bounty: the body of Jesus. Because of this blessing, we are all harvested as God’s own children. In singing Psalm 67 we acknowledge the unimaginable magnitude of this harvest, and pray that all peoples may come to know the blessedness given them through Christ. The hymn A Bright And Shining Presence (text by Michael Joncas) reviews many of the passages we have heard during the Advent and Christmastide. Verse 1 retells the narrative of Gabriel’s annunciation; verse 2 calls to mind the Visitation with the greeting of John the Baptist leaping in the womb; verse 3 recounts the Gospel of the day with its narrative of the shepherds confirming with their own eyes the truth of the angelic message to them; verse 4 prays that we might emulate Mary in our trust and service to the God who has chosen us in and for Christ.

Our choirs will be ministering at the following mass:

Children’s Choir January 8th @ 10:00 am January 29th @ 12:00 pm

Adult Choir January 8th @ 12:00 pm January 15th @ 10:00 am January 22nd @ 12:00 pm January 29th @ 10:00 am

First grade continues to be a busy place to learn and have fun. In the fall during the month of October, first grade participated in a hands-on composting science activity in which we took a pumpkin that we hollowed out, filled it with garbage (cans, bits and pieces of our leftover snack, wrappers, etc.) and buried it! In April, on Earth Day, we will dig up our pumpkin to see what we find. We made predictions and wrote about what we think we will find, and will com-pare our predictions to what is actually there. This was definitely an exciting activity, and the students cannot wait for Spring! The Christmas season was also a busy time in first grade. We started with the liturgical season of Advent and hear-ing Jesse Tree stories to learn more about Jesus. We learned about Joseph, Moses, Noah, Adam and Eve, and Jacob and how they all listened to God’s call. We held a weekly Advent prayer service in our hallway with Second and Third grade to understand the meaning of the weekly Advent message. As we begin our New Year, we continue to follow Jesus and his teachings. We will learn how Jesus calls each of us to be his disciples and to continue our acts of kindness throughout our daily lives.
