A Divine Encounter (taken from Commentary On Today’s First Reading)

Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry Mass with Blessing of the throats

Saturday, February 3, 2018

8:30 AM SAINT LAWRENCE THE MARTYR

MASS AND CELEBRATION OF “THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

FOR THE SICK”- Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial

COMMUNAL SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK AND BLESSING OF CAREGIVERS

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2018 AT 10:00 AM

Dedicated to the Lord’s service before he was born, Samuel lives now under the tutelage of the temple priest, Eli. He began his service a very early age and now, possibly aged thirteen, he experiences a divine encounter that will set the trajectory of his life. Samuel will become a prophet who, like John the Baptist, uncompromisingly speaks God’s word. He will straddle the age of judges – military leaders who led in times of peril – and the age of kings, the first of which, Saul and David, Samuel himself anointed.

A listening and obedient heart distinguished this young boy, and the discernment of his master, Eli, helps set the stage for the divine encounter we hear today. Often, a pivotal event seems quite ordinary when it occurs; only later does its profound significance strike us. As listeners, we understand the significance for Samuel’s life, and the life of Israel, of this divine call. But Samuel is not aware and Eli is slow to catch on.

Note the elements of the story: the setting – the magnificent temple where a young boy is easily overwhelmed and where Eli recognizes the special presence of God; the characters – Samuel, young, naïve, and sleepy, and Eli, tired but patient, then suddenly aware; the suspense – the Lord calls and calls again; Eli understands (the turning point, and God finally speaks (the climax).

When Samuel first approaches Eli, he speaks with the sleepy awareness of a child doing what he thinks he’s told. Eli is calm and gentle. But the third time, Samuel is more insistent. Suddenly, Eli comprehends and responds with clears instructions. This divine encounter transforms Samuel and the boy grows into a sturdy tree that bears much good fruit.

Volunteer Opportunities The Sacristan Ministry

Saint Lawrence the Martyr Parish is in great need of

Sanctuary Attendants and Setup Sacristans.

SETUP SACRISTANS: Preparing the table before the Liturgy is the setup sacristan’s responsibility. Arriving at least 30 minutes before Mass to set out all the items needed for liturgy and then staying after liturgy to clean up and put everything away. Time commitment: One Sunday a month (one hour).

SANCTUARY ATTENDANTS: The Sanctuary Attendants clean the Church each Friday or Saturday by working in teams of two. They are responsible for making sure the worship space is clean and tidy for the weekend Masses. Currently there are 4 teams so the time commitment is once every four weeks. It takes two people one hour a week.

Please prayerfully consider joining one of these essential ministries.
