I was born in Caracas, Venezuela on May 12, 1957, being the second child out of four children. I have been married to Betsy for thirty-four years and had three children: Linarbet, Eilyn, and Andrés. It was by the Spring of 1991 that we immigrated to the States because I wanted to pursue further theological studies. I was raised in a devout Roman Catholic home. Moreover, the education I received in a Jesuit school left a lasting imprint in my religious and intellectual life, and was pivotal for my future vocation. However, during my childhood my religious

life took an unexpected turn due to my parents becoming “Pentecostal-Evangelicals” resulting in our deserting of the Roman Catholic Church. Consequently, I continued my spiritual growth in a different Christian tradition than the one where I had received my Sacramental initiation. Then, I started a spiritual journey involving myself in the Christian ministry for a total of twenty-five years with different Protestant churches. I admit with gratefulness the contribution made by each tradition to the maturity of my Christian faith along with the paradoxes, contradictions and challenges I encountered in each of them. However, my desire for deeper understanding to serve the Church better led me to discover the Church Fathers and other ancient writings. Consequently, I moved further along the theological spectrum of Protestantism to inquire into a historical Christian tradition were the episcopacy was held as of the essence of the Church. Therefore, I entered in the Reformed Episcopal Church but I continued immersing myself more deeply into the world of the Church Fathers, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Augustine, the Doctors of the Church, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church among other ancient and modern Catholic writings. Consequently, the new discoveries led me seriously to consider the Roman Catholic Church where the total richness of the Christian faith is found. Simultaneously, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed in 2009 the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus to embrace worldwide Anglican groups seeking to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. This new ecclesiological development paved the way for me and my parishioners to reconcile with the Roman Church and her Bishop. At present, there has been erected three Personal Ordinariates: England and Wales, U.S. and Canada, and Australia. Pope Benedict XVI established the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter on January 1, 2012 for those groups of Anglicans in the United States and Canada in unity with the Catholic Church (www.usordinariate.org). Pope Benedict's gracious response represents a significant and exciting new initiative along the difficult path toward Christian unity. I am grateful to Fr. Paul Vuturo and the St. Louis family for opening their arms to welcome us and become our host for our small Ordinariate community to grow in faith but above all to become a living testimony of Christian unity in Miami, FL. I along with my family and twenty-one of my parishioners were received into the Catholic Church by Monsignor Jeffrey Steenson, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate, on September 15, 2012 here at St. Louis Catholic Church. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will ordain me a Catholic priest on Saturday, February 15 at 10 AM here at St. Louis Catholic Church. Join us for this wonderful celebration of Holy Orders.

In Christ, Rev. Pedro Toledo

Congratulations to Rev. Pedro Toledo!Archbishop Thomas Wenski will ordain him as a

Legion of Mary would like to invite you every Monday through Friday in the Chapel to pray with them.

Rosary at 8 AMMass 8:30 AMRosary of the Seven Sorrows of Mary 9 AM

Pamphlets and rosaries provided.

Help others in need to help feed those in need. We ask that families take advantage of the BOGO (buy one get one) offers at the local supermarkets, and donate the second item to the St. Louis Food Pantry. They can be dropped off in the bins located in the vestibule of the church. We will then collect them and store them for others that come to the parish office in need of food. What a great way to help our neighbors and set an example to those around us to do the same!

We can also collect the perishable items that are offered; all we ask for those items is that arrangements be made in advance by contacting Bob Friedlander 786-554-3420. Come join the St. Louis BOGO ministry “Buy one give one.”

Pray with us!

Young Adult Group

Do you have a heart for intercessory prayer? St. Louis Prayer Chain Ministry always welcomes new members. If you are in need of prayer or wish to join our ministry, please call Miriam Columbro at 786-430-0302 or e-mail: [email protected]. Our prayer chain list can be found on our website www.stlcatholic.org under Parish Ministries.

NOTE: We will appreciate a call letting us know the progress of those you call for, so we could keep them in prayer or release them from our list. Thank you.

A Toad in the Pool

The other night I came back into the rectory’s screened pool patio from walking my Min Pin Belle. We ran into a toad who was so startled by us that it jumped into the pool. It swam pretty well, but I soon realized that coming to the edge of the pool, the poor creature could not climb out the side. With a pole and a dust pan I tried to navigate it into a corner, but still that did not help. (My dog is now chasing me around the pool and thinking that I am crazy.) The steps and the pool ladder did not help; they were too deep. I kept trying to scoop it out but it kept escaping. I knew it would eventually drown. ( I felt sorry for the toad but also did not want a smelly dead carcass floating around in the morning.) Finally one of my scoops worked; the toad landed on the patio and hopped into the bushes. Success! Three points: the toad did not know it needed saving; the toad did not want to be saved; the savior had to persist. Familiar story? Sounds like us humans. We humans sometimes do not know we need saving. A dimension of our secular culture sees humanity as quite capable of looking after itself. We take responsibilities; we make decisions; we make things better. Human problems we humans can solve. Yet this supposition belies basic human experience; we can find no ultimate human solution to the human situation. The inescapable enigma of death always stumps the most optimistic and confident person; no one gets out of here alive! We can live like we do not need saving, but perhaps it is just because we do not think deep enough or reflect long enough. Without a faith perspective, Shakespeare’s Macbeth laments: “And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.” We humans may not want to be saved, because we do not know we need saving help. Aren’t we blessed because our saving God remains so persistent? Throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, we hear about the relentless mercy of God that continues through the centuries to pursue a people who may act like they do not want or need saving. He continues to chase all of us and each of us. I only saved a little toad from becoming a mess in the pool. Our God saves us for eternal life.

Yours in Christ,
