SISTER MARY LYN PAYETTE, SSJ. Well done, good and faithful servant
Born: January 8, 1943 Entered Religious Life: August 11, 1961 Entered Eternal Life: August 16, 2019
For more than 55 years, Sister served the people of God in Florida. Her fondest memories came while she missioned at St. Lucie from 1979 until 1985. She worked as the Director of Catholic Education and Pre-Cana Coordinator.
Sister Mary Lyn was blessed with a gentle spirit and a fine sense of humor. She enjoyed teaching the "little ones" and worked well with others in the school setting. She directed many children in catechesis and eventually brought her expertise to the handicapped. Throughout her years of active ministry, she eventually spear-headed entire catechetical programs in several large parishes.
In 2012 she became a resident of Our Lady of Lourdes Convent (Diocese of St. Augustine). Gradually Sister Mary Lyn's health began to decline. She was blessed to spend her last days surrounded by the Sisters and her beloved twin Sister Marlene. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made In Memory of Sister Mary Lyn Payette, SSJ. Please make checks payable to the Sisters of St. Joseph, PO Box 3506, St. Augustine, FL 32085.

ORDINATION OF CHARLES IMMORDINO
This Saturday, September 7, 2019, 11:00 AM, St. Lucie Parish will rejoice with Charles Immordino as he is ordained by Bishop Barbarito to the Deaconate! St. Lucie parishioners are welcome to attend Charles’ ordination at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola, 9995 N. Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens. Charles Immordino was born in Yonkers, New York in 1950. He attended St. Barnabas Grammar School in the Bronx and Xavier High School in Manhattan. He attended Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception and graduated from St. John’s University in 1972. Charles graduated from Nursing School in 1976 and has been actively practicing nursing for over 40 years. Charles is a 30+ year veteran of the US Army and Army reserve with 6 years of enlisted service and 24 years of commissioned service. Charles retired from the military in 2006, after completing his final assignment Chief Nursing Officer of a Combat Support Hospital. He has earned many awards in his military career including the Meritorious Service Medal. Charles has lived in Florida since 1976 and has been a member of St. Lucie Catholic Church since 1979. He and his wife Diana have three children Christine, Melissa and Matthew and six grandchildren Tyler, Kayla, Logan, Ashley, Madison and Savannah. Charles has worked with the local hospitals in the area since 1976 and has served in various roles from staff nurse and ICU nurse, to Vice President of Clinical
Operations. Charles also served on the Board of Hospice of the Treasure Coast for more than ten years. In 2010 Charles opened his own Ambulatory Surgery Center Consulting firm with his partner Mark Rainis, who worships at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City. The business is based in Palm City and Charles is particularly proud of the way his business helps Ambulatory Health Care facilities achieve and maintain safe and successful patient care. Charles began his church life at a very young age. In the third grade he became an “altar boy” and served on the altar through high school. He had always felt the calling to be a priest, but God took him in another direction when he met Diana. He has always served God’s people through his vocation as a Registered Nurse and as an officer in the Army helping to bring the love of God to the people he served with and led. In St. Lucie you are very likely to find Charles working with engaged couples, bringing communion to the sick and shut-ins, serving on the altar during Mass, visiting the prisoners and bringing Christ’s love to them at Okeechobee State Prison. Upon retirement from the Military in 2006, Charles began to look seriously into the Diaconate and in 2014 was accepted into the Diocese of Palm Beach Diaconate Program. After 5+ years of study and formation at St. Vincent DePaul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, he will be ordained a deacon on September 7, 2019. Charles is excited and feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve the people of God as a Deacon and he is looking forward to serving the loving and wonderful people of St. Lucie Parish. Congratulations to our “soon-to-be” newest Deacon!

What is a Permanent Deacon?
by Deacon Dale Konas
Even after 50 years, the permanent diaconate still confuses some people. If deacons aren't priests, are they laypeople? No- they are ordained. The deacon, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, is constituted as a sacred minister of the church, working under the direction of the diocesan Bishop and collaboratively with the presbyterate (priests) of the diocese. It has been said that the diaconate and the presbyterate act as the arms of the Bishop. Just as the priest is an icon of Christ who presides, orders are conferred upon a man for the diaconate so that there might be a sacramental manifestation of the church's mission of diakonia (service) and of Christ the servant. The diaconate is the first part of the Sacrament of Holy Orders followed by priesthood and the episcopacy. Together, these three stages formed the one sacrament of Holy Orders. There is no difference in the sacramental sign or functions between these so-called "transitional" (on the way to priesthood) and "permanent" deacons. Most permanent deacons are married. The permanent diaconate is a specific vocation in the Church, one that depends on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. God is the one who calls deacons to serve in the Church through the sacrament of Holy Orders. It is not only what a deacon does, but who a deacon is, that is important. When assisting at Mass, the deacon represents the people at the sacrifice. Preparation and formation of a permanent deacon includes being reformed; to include spiritual, theological and pastoral training. Most programs are
five years in duration. Truly a balancing act between the formation and education of those called by God. Both the church and the candidate discern the diaconate vocation throughout the formation process which includes their wives. Permanent deacons live a unique life in the church. They are clerics who have a foot in the secular world via work and family. Their unique perspective benefits the Church. Some of the duties of Permanent Deacons as servant leaders are: assist at Mass, witness marriages, preaching, baptisms, baptism preparation classes, wake services, funerals outside of Mass, graveside services, communion services at nursing homes, prison ministry, house blessings, home visits, benediction, pastoral counseling, blessings, spiritual advisor to parish organizations, teaching, available for any other assignment by pastor or bishop. We look forward to welcoming our 5th deacon to our parish, Charles Immordino with his ordination on September 7th.

FROM THE OFFICE OF OUR BISHOP August 31, 2019 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Next weekend, September 7 and 8, the Diocese of Palm Beach will have a special collection to benefit the Respect Life Ministry and Migrant Ministry. These ministries seek to protect the sacredness and uniqueness of God’s people. Specifically, the Respect Life Program is a year-round, nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged in building a culture that cherishes every human life. As followers of Jesus Christ and members of His Church, we seek to protect and promote the sanctity of the unborn, the poor, the unemployed, the migrant, the marginalized, the imprisoned, the sick, the persecuted and the vulnerable The mission of the Migrant Ministry program is to serve and advocate for refugees, asylees, migrants, unaccompanied children and victims of human trafficking. These individuals typically have suffered great loss, including their homes, livelihoods, possessions and oftentimes families, therefore needing assistance to start over in a new environment. Your support helps with their initial needs including food, clothing, shelter, employment, English language training and orientation to a new community and culture. Together let us prayerfully and compassionately respond in faith to those who cry out to God in desperation as they seek a safe place for themselves and their families. With gratitude for your continued generosity and every prayerful wish, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

COLECTA “BOX OF JOY” (Caja de Alegría)
¡Muchas gracias!

PROTECCION A LOS NIÑOS Fuente: Virtus Online.org
Por Paul Ashton, Psy.D., D. Min. (extracto)
