Feast cont from page 1

But here is the key: “impervious to the dictates of their intelligence.” Our intelligence is granted by God for good use, for helping the Other in their need. Our intelligence wants to draw closer to God, but is being prevented by our will, which wants to see what messages we have received “in the morning watches.” He wrote these words in the 1990s, before the age of Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram. In the 1990s, one would still need to turn on the television or the computer; now, all it requires is looking at one’s phone. But the Scripture says, “from the morning watch until night, from the morning watch, let Israel trust in the Lord.” How do we make the Lord the first and last effort of our lives each day? I suggest the following simple rule of life: do not look at your phones, turn on the television, or learn the news (any news), without first having said your prayers. And when you rest at night, do nothing after having sad your evening prayers. It is important for us to train our intellect to make our first offering of the day to God, in the same way as our first offering when we enter church is to light a candle. Then perhaps, with all the distractions attending to us every day, we may have fewer regrets about the words we say and those we choose to receive. As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, remember that the Holy Spirit has been given to us so we can be of good use in the service of God. If God can make of fishermen, widely considered by their age to be simple people, “all wise,” then certainly He can make of the over-informed in our age the properly informed. Let it be so! Come Holy Spirit! Amen.

He was a fisherman, unlearned and poor and was called Simon but renamed Peter by the Lord Jesus Christ. He became an Apostle and inseparable from the Lord, he r ece i ved comp le te forgiveness after denying Christ thrice from his fear of danger.

Paul, the chosen vessel of Christ, glory of the Church and Apostle of the Nations and teacher of the whole world. He was a Roman citizen, an expert in Law and a pharisee. From the beginning he was a most fervent zealot for the traditions of the Jews and a persecutor fo the Church of Christ. His zeal turned to a love of Christ after a light from Heaven spoke to him s a y i n g , “ S a u l , w h y persecutest thou me?” The h e a v e n l y v o i c e a n d brilliance blinded him and both his bodily and spiritual eyes were opened to the knowledge of the Sun of Righteousness, following his b a p t i s m a n d d i v i n e revelat ion the Apost le Ananias.

Dear St. Luke Parishioners,I want to wish each and everyone a great warm, healthy and joy full spring season. Some are welcoming their youth back from college, and some are awaiting in warm anticipation the end of the school year to start their vacation. Anyway we look at it, the change is coming. The Youth/Children have to adapt to the end of their freedom and in parallel the parents have to adapt to the busy life again. Either way, we look at it; it’s going to be a full fun, loving family time. The youth are going to drive the parents crazy and the parents are going to drive the youth crazy (the civilized clash of the generations and the distanced point of views).

The church in return is turning the clock backwards so you may enjoy the longer summer days with your friends and family and the chance to accomplish your summer chores.

I want to take a moment to give a tribute to a dear friend and fellow parishioner Anastasia Manitsas. Ann was wonderful in welcoming my family and me to St. Luke. When I was the Chairperson of the Stewardship way back, Ann was a great inspiration and a shining candle. She helped me understand the position and the responsibilities that came with it, in a time when the Church had a mortgage and in financial difficulties. Ann also was a wealth of knowledge in world politics. We used to have great discussions about the US and the World. She was very sensitive to my heartbreak over the Lebanese war. Whenever there was fighting in

Lebanon, she would call me and ask me about my family followed by a sweet prayer. She knew what was going on in Lebanon when half of the world had no clue. May Ann’s Memory Be eternal and May the gates of Heaven welcomes her with white roses. Good Night my friend.

I want to Thank Jim Danalis, and the entire Facilities Committee, for the nice job on the bathrooms. We are blessed to have you on board. I want to thank Harry Georgiades on doing a wonderful job with the ushering schedule and coordination. Harry appreciates any volunteers that come forward.

The Taste of Greece Drums is beating. We would like to see a great number of parishioner’s participation. Please volunteer to help in any caliber that suits your passion and expertise.

We need more involvement from everyone. We have many events and celebrations that need committee leaders to chair and see these events through. Please volunteer to chair or serve these events and celebrations.

Helen, Father and I welcome your calls and emails, so we may add you to our list of volunteers. Please see Helen to share with you the calendar of all the dates and events.

I pray that the blessings of our Lord and Savior be upon all of you,

Assaad Andrew HallakParish Council President

GOYA

Hope/JOY

Sunday School

We hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather!

We had a very successful World Vision fundraising dance on May 18th. Everyone had a wonderful time and we raised money for a good cause. We will be having a year-end event in June to wrap up the year! We thank all who support GOYA as we continue to pursue our ministry.

Philippos Dimitrolgou GOYA President

We had our last get-together and had a great time. We watched Wall-E, a super discussion followed with some planting of pots for the home, to reinforce the lesson. The older kids are moving up to Jr. GOYA and we will need one or two new parent volunteers to assist/ co-lead with Hope/Joy. It’s not difficult or too time consuming. If you are interested in helping keep your children learning and excited about the faith- Please speak with Father or Sarah Kirchner. Sarah has graciously offered to remain involved to assist the new co- leaders. Hope/Joy is for elementary children ages 4-12.

I would like to thank all our dedicated students and teachers who helped us through another year. Wishing you all a safe and fun filled summer, that we may ALL come back ready to take on another productive school year in September. Once again, we must remind ourselves that the future of our Blessed St. Luke is in the hands of our children. Let us all make them feel welcome in EVERY THING we do. Keep them involved so they will begin to fill our shoes in the future.

God Bless, Priscilla Johnson

Dear Fellow Parishioners:

The following is the Stewardship Report that was presented at the General Assembly held on May 6, 2018.

So far in 2018, we have 123 pledges of time, talent, and treasure of which the total amount for treasure is income of $97,373. The average pledge is $792 per steward. We also have 47 parishioners who are giving but who have not submitted a pledge. While we truly appreciate everyone’s support, it’s important to pledge not only so we know who is available to volunteer for one of our many ministries, but we rely on our pledge of treasure to help us budget our finances. Though you may be one that g ives generous ly wi thout pledging, we just want this to serve as a reminder that we do use this information to help us plan.

With regards to the 123 pledges we have received to date, approximately 50% are for less than $500 and only 8 pledges are for $1500 or more. The financial reality is that the average pledge needs to double from where it is today to pay for our operating costs and annual budget.

Last month, the Stewardship Committee mailed each parishioner a letter with their quarterly statement. In all of the letters that went out, we stressed the fact that involvement in our community was our priority. This has been our underlying message that we have tried to communicate. This is why we have “Stewardship Witnesses” come in front of the parish to speak about a particular ministry that they have identified with and have been involved with and how it has enhanced their relationship with God.

It is up to the people of our parish to get involved and stay involved to continue the vitality of our church. Please be mindful that during the summer, while you may be on vacation, our bills and commitments do not take a break. Please don’t forget to submit your weekly stewardship and take part in the different ministries that meet throughout

the summer, including the many baking workshops that are scheduled to prepare for the The Taste of Greece. We can’t do it without your help!

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to reach out to us.

God Bless,

Joe and Meghan Dasco

"Dancing With Heart" 2018 - A Recap

The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke, in a charitable partnership with Shriners Hospital for Children - Springfield, presented the second annual "Dancing With Heart" fundraiser. All was much the same as last year's event...well, not quite all!

After last year's full house event, we knew we could not accommodate another person in our own Fellowship Hall. So, the search was on to procure a larger venue. After visiting the Cedars Banquet Hall and discussing the evening with the on-site event manager, we knew we had found a match.

Last year, each of our non-professional dancers chose a charity that was close to their heart for which they would dance. We wanted to change it up a bit deciding to choose one charity for which all dancers performed. Half of the net profit raised would go towards that charitable beneficiary. And, we found that perfect charity in our own backyard...Shriners Hospital for Children-Springfield.

After having 8 non-professional dancers perform last year, we wanted to increase the number a bit providing a fuller program. This increase would also necessitate a ballroom dance studio with a larger staff of instructors. We were exceptionally lucky to have found the Ballroom Fever Dance Studio in Enfield, CT.

And so, in August, the planning began. The result...a sell out two months before the evening of the event.!! Who would have thought that would ever happen.

Fast forward to the evening of April 28th, the Cedars Hall was bursting at the seams...560 people in attendance. We could not fathom the sight we saw...560 people did not sound as large as it looked. Our committee, like the

spokes of a well-oiled wheel, did w h a t they do so well assuring that the wheel turned smoothly throughout the evening. From tickets and seating, to hors d'oeuvres, to raffle purchases, to desserts, to photography and videography, to intermittent social dancing, to the main show...all in all, we can say that the working partners of the affair were nothing but fabulous, and together we made a memorable evening.

Yes, we are aware that certain things were none too perfect. Working on an event in a new venue was a bit difficult...much different than using our own hall which we have set up many a time in so many different ways that we could probably do it with one eye shut. There was much to learn. Our committee has already met to discuss this year's event and what we have learned from it. We will meet again to discuss some ideas for improving next year's event. We have identified areas to be looked at...ease of viewing, excessive wait time at the bar, ability to move between the tables, even distribution of the sound system, and abundance of food (of which we heard varying opinions). Yes, you are reading correctly...an event of this magnitude takes approximately 9 months of planning.

Dancing With Heart

Page 10: Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Churchstlukego.org/assets/files/MESSENGER JUNE 2018.pdf · The Messenger is a publication of the Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church of East Longmeadow, MA

Although we have identified areas we can improve upon, we can definitely say that most of the feedback we have received has been nothing but positive...from the food offered, the performance of the dancers, the social dancing, and the charity chosen.

On May 17th, four of our DWH committee members and our 1st place dancer were invited to attend the Shriners Board of Governors monthly meeting. A case study was presented by one of their doctors regarding the history that brought the patient to Shriners; the medical plan provided for the patient; the outcome of these services, as well as the continuing care plan. It was most interesting and touching. The patient and his mom were there and participated in the discussion.

They answered questions from the group and shared the more personal side of how their lives were affected. Additionally, a portion of this meeting was dedicated to group donations. We were excited to present our check in the amount of $17,197.69 (one half of the event's net profit). Our targeted donation moved an on-going campaign one step closer to the goal of a new in-patient acute care rehabilitation unit on the premises. Our day ended with an educational and heartwarming tour of the hospital. When reflecting on the day, there is no other conclusion than to realize that reaching out into our community in a way never done in the past, working with people of different skills, beliefs, and talents lends us to know that we did the right thing; that we are wrapping our arms around and bringing folks into the welcoming and warm St. Luke way!

T a s t e o f G r e e c eTaste of Greece workshops are going into full swing OPA!!!

We are pleased to recognize Melissa Kaitis as our Parishioner of the Year. Melissa is a tireless laborer doing the Lord's work, involved as she is fully in our parish life.

Melissa has been and continues to be involved in several of our parish ministries: Parish Council (past), Philoptochos (currently Vice President), and Choir (current member). She has been involved in GOYA and has coordinated and led the 30 Hour Famine. She has also been one of the main leaders/coordinators for Breakfast with Saint Nicholas, having designed and made games for the children, as well as prepared the hall for this yearly event. She supports the Taste of Greece and coordinates the Food Outreach baskets: including shopping and putting the baskets together for Westover Air Base and homebound and elderly parishioners who receive special gift baskets during Pascha and Christmas.

Melissa and her husband Argirios have also raised their daughters, Maria and Sophia, as active youth in the parish and our ministries.

We are pleased to honor Melissa Kaitis. Her enthusiasm for Christ, dedication, joyful disposition that supports others, and selfless service makes a difference in our parish, the lives of our parishioners, and the larger community.
