Saint Luke A ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF DISCIPLES
THE CHURCH OF

(619) 442-1697 www.thechurchofstluke.org
28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - October 15, 2017
Reflection Reflect upon/Share about what it means to truly be a disciple of the Lord. How do you wear your baptismal garment so it can be seen in public? What can you change in your life to make sure you are more visibly a disciple of the Lord? Alternate: Reflect upon/Share about party or event which you enjoyed. What does the way you dressed for that party, or event, say about you? What does the way you act in everyday life say about your relationship to God?
Gospel The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and
good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to
meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘My friend how is it that you came in here without a wedding gar-
ment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants,
‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

From the Pastor
Dear parishioners, A couple of things have happened this week that make me feel like I need to speak on the Anthem protests by NFL players and the Black Lives Matter movement in general.
Many people have responded to the Black Lives Matter movement by saying that all lives matter. That’s true, all lives do matter. That’s Christianity. But, the Black Lives Matter movement is not denying that. It’s not saying that Black live matter and others don’t. It’s saying that we have brothers and sisters in our communities who feel they are being treated as if their lives don’t matter. Some people seem to think that we have to take sides against the Black Lives Matter movement if we are going to support our police. That’s simply not true. We don’t have to take sides against anybody. We must side with both the black community and our police if we are ever going to solve the problem. It is not going to be solved by creating greater divisions, or laying blame, or anything else that doesn’t bring us together. The problem is a problem for all of us, not just or black brothers and sisters. I can’t even tell you exactly what the problem is but I can tell you we should be looking into it. We should be asking ourselves, with all stakeholders represented, what is the problem and what can we do, together, to solve it? The Anthem protest is precisely that, a protest. Protests are designed to bring a particular subject to the forefront. The Boston Tea Party was an illegal protest that brought a burning colonial issue to the knowledge of King George. Yet we hold that up as a glorious part of our American history. George Washington, by the way, was completely against that protest. And, that protest was one of the things that led to war. The protestors aren’t protesting the flag or America. They are protesting the unequal treatment many believe our black communities experience with our police. This is not something we should go to war over. It is something we should work together on. I have to commend Roger Goodell. In his letter to the owners, he speaks of a plan that would be revealed at their next meeting that would provide a method “to promote the work of our players on these core issues, and that will help to promote positive change in our country.” I don’t know if what he is proposing will work but I think it is better than simply condemning the messenger. By the way, divisive attitudes, actions and comments are not Christian. Pray for their fruitfulness, Fr. Ron

Gospel Meditation, Live the Liturgy & Why Do We Do That
GOSPEL MEDITATION: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time "My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?" Today's Gospel parable is unsettling in several ways. The various images of rejection, mistreatment, and violence paint an unpleasant picture. Guests refuse to come to a feast, servants are killed, troops are dispatched. The King continues to try to fill his dinner hall, and then when someone finally does show up, the King throws him out for wearing the wrong clothes. What is going on here? The message would have been a poignant one for his Jewish listeners. As the chosen people, they were the first to receive the "invitation" to share in the kingdom of God. But the chief priests and elders were uninterested in accepting Jesus and his authority; thus they didn't show up for the feast. But what about those who did come? Something is expected of them as well. Donning a "wedding garment" is like being properly prepared to enter God's kingdom. Just showing up isn't enough. Here it's important to pay attention to the details. The King first calls his poorly dressed guest "friend." The approach begins with mercy and kind-ness. But the man gives no defense for himself, and displays no desire to change. It's as if he doesn't really care to be there at all. The question this raises for us is whether or not we are "dressed" appropri-ately. We may hang around the banquet hall--going to church, professing to be Christian--but are we sincere guests of the King of kings? Do we truly accept Christ's teachings and live by them, or are we just showing up? The splendors of the invitation Christ gives us should not be taken for granted. We are called to share in a royal feast. May we all be grateful guests.
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Pope Francis constantly reminds us of the wideness of God's mercy and its unconditional character. God is always patiently loving his children and opening the doors to his heart. We must, however, freely choose to accept God's invitation and join in the feast of his love. We desire many things and we have restless hearts. We often attempt to quench our desire with things that are short-lived and shallow. All of us long to be satisfied and at peace. How do we announce to the world, in ways that are convincing and without judgment, that it is really God whom we seek?
WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: Who is Ignatius of Antioch and what example does he offer us in Christian living as we celebrate his feast day on October 17? Answer: As Bishop of Antioch (the modern day city of Antakya, Turkey), Ignatius witnessed to the faith during the reign of Emperor Trajan, who ruled from 98-117. Persecution of the Christians broke out in Antioch, and Ignatius was captured and taken to Rome for martyrdom in the arena. On his journey to Rome over land and sea, Ignatius writes seven letters to various churches. These letters give powerful glimpses into the theology and practice of the early church, along with insights into the role of a bishop as pastoral leader. Ignatius is the first to use the term "Catholic Church" to refer to the various Christian communities of the Roman Empire. The best known of his letters is the one he wrote to the Romans. Ignatius addresses influential Christians who might be tempted to intercede on his behalf, thus sparing him from martyrdom. As Christ willingly offered himself as witness to God's total love, Ignatius, too, desired to be "food for the wild beasts," so that he could become "the pure bread of Christ." Eucharistic living was so crucial to Ignatius that he was willing to die in order to model himself on the Lord who willingly offered all.
