Mass Intentions From Fr. Flanagan

Dear St. Madeline Family, I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12: 1-2) During the lockdown period, I came across a healing prayer from Padre Pio. My abbreviated version is, “I pray for healing of mind, body, soul and spirit, through the intercession of Padre Pio (and I added) St. John Vianney, Mother Teresa and St. Therese the Little Flower.” I still use this for any type of healing. In Sunday’s reading, St. Paul urges us to offer our bodies as holy and pleasing to God, and to be transformed by the renewal of our mind. Being pleasing to God is an “all in” process that includes our entire being – mind, body, soul and spirit. St. Paul urges and encourages us to never give up on the journey. Paul himself was shipwrecked, beaten, and imprisoned but he persevered on his mission to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. We need, and the age we live in, needs this good news. God bless you and God bless the St. Mad’s Family! Peace,

Fr. John Flanagan

Reading I: Jeremiah 20: 7-9 Here is a “confession” of the St. Augustine sort, in which the prophet reveals the pains and bothersome elements of his calling. He says he feels “duped” or “tricked” by God. In fulfilling his mission, he faced many persecutors, and yet the urge to preach was irresistible, so he has carried on. Reading II: Romans 12: 1-2 Christian life is supposed to be a sacrifice offered to God. Also, we are not to conform to the passing world, but to the things of the life to come that will last. We are therefore to be inwardly transformed. The Gospel: Matthew 16: 21-27 Peter, only having recently proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, now becomes an unwitting obstacle to the Lord’s mission. How? By remonstrating Jesus when He says His mission involves the cross. Jesus goes on to describe Peter’s disciple- ship, and ours, as a matter of taking up our own cross, whatever that might be.

Baptism: We welcome Brooke Kathryn Powley as a new member of our community, born of water and the Holy Spirit.

St. Madeline PREP

St. Madeline PREP will begin in September but we will not be returning to the classrooms at St. James Regional Catholic School. After reviewing various possibilities, keeping your children safe at home to continue their faith journeys is the best option right now. Bringing your children closer to Jesus and the Sacraments is our combined responsibility as parents and catechists. As we approach September, more information will be shared with you on our exact process of a blend of virtual lessons (recorded, not Real Time) with parent directed follow-up.

Currently Enrolling SPE Members for EITC Tax Credits! The EITC program has had a tremendous impact on the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s ability to offer financial aid to many deserving families. Families who receive EITC scholarships would not be able to experience a Catholic education without these generous donations from individuals in the community. The Foundation for Catholic Education is currently accepting commitments for the 2020 tax year. You can choose the school where you would like your tax dollars to go! It is a win-win for everyone!!
