Dear Parishioners and Friends, I just no ced a li le while ago that I am somehow avoiding wri ng this week’s page... The muses are slower for some reason this week, this day, this hour... There may well be some

avoidance going on as they say. This page is my penul mate wri en musing and sharing with you as your pastor. Last evening the parish staff very graciously took me to dinner at a local restaurant. We enjoyed a very pleasant evening, broke bread together and vigorously conversed... It was really nice. I am very grateful to them not only for the dinner and evening but for all their years, months and days and days of service and support, not just for me but for the whole Church and this parish in par cular! The last

me I gathered like that with a parish staff in prepara on for moving on to another assignment was 31 years ago! (My Navy experience was similar but not quite the same as parish life.) I feel out of prac ce... perhaps that adds to the sense of avoidance... Gratefully I find a very real reassurance in today’s liturgy. The Church celebrates Pentecost this day. Pentecost is the sending and giving of the Holy Spirit to and upon the apostles and the community of faith. It happened then and it happens now. With all the leaving and le ng go in life… there remains an abiding presence… “I will not leave you orphans…” “I must go so that the Father may send the Holy Spirit…” The Holy Spirit has come upon us as Church and as individuals. The sacrament of Confirma on celebrates the giŌs the Holy Spirt to our young people. Some 55 of them received those gi s a few weeks ago… Those giŌs are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, for tude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Along with those giŌs there are certain signs that they have taken root. They bear certain fruits according to St. Paul’s Le er to the Gala ans. When my life is marked by those gi s, I experience charity, a real love and compassion for others; there is a deep joy in my heart; I feel at peace with myself and the world around me; I have pa ence with those around me; I act with more kindness; and goodness; I live and act with generosity to the needy and the important people in my life; I live more gently, I rush less; I trust the Lord and am faithful; I am modest in my manner, I have no need to draw a en on to myself; I act with self-control; I chastely respect my body and others. Wow! The Holy Spirit is something! Eh?

THE PASTOR’S PAGE For those who have not heard, Fr. Robert Cullen has been appointed Administrator of St. Margaret Mary Parish effec ve June 1. He comes to us from St. John Parish in Quincy where he has served for the past 6 years. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston in 2005 from Pope St. John XXIII Seminary. We will provide more details as we receive them. He will be here soon enough! Please extend to him a warm St. Margaret Mary welcome! By way of welcoming as well, we have retained a part me support staff person who will be working with the parish to help “develop” our programs, par cipa on, staff and community building. We have so many younger families whom we can reach out to who are the future of our parish and the Church. These are exci ng mes for our parish. I will watch them from afar however… So please welcome Chris an Nielsen, who comes to us from the Archdiocese and is now working independently for a number parishes and Catholic organiza ons to help them grow and develop in this 21st century challenging environment. As we welcome others, we must also say farewell as Jackie Kerr our parish secretary has taken her leave from us. Jackie has been with us for four years and now has moved on with her career plans. We wish her the very best and are very grateful for her help and support through the years… She has promised to help us out as best she can as we transi on to new leadership and undertakings. Finally, you’ll no ce the new landscaping project is just about done. Plants and trees have been planted. Irriga on is almost complete and a few minor addi ons s ll need to be made. We will add mulch and then it’s done… We have worked long and hard to make the our church accessible, beau ful and welcoming… I think we have done it! It re-mains to pay for it… I invite you to watch Page Two of the bulle n… we will list there the costs… roughly… stone and stone work was about $19k; plants and trees and plan ngs about $14k; plumbing and irriga on early $5k. Finally, finally, allow me to say thank you again for all you have done for me during my me as your Pastor. Next weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is my last weekend. I know many of you will be traveling. Many of you will be here too… As I take my leave, I want to extend an invita on to all to visit Pope St. John XXIII Seminary and to pray for voca ons to the priesthood. God bless you and stay strong, Fr. Linehan

Dear Friends in Christ, Today we celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost! And there is a lot to celebrate. While this brings our Easter Season to a close as we move into Ordinary Time, what we’re celebra ng is the phase in the life of

the Church that we live in, what theologians call the Age of the Holy Spirit. We don’t need to wonder what that first Pentecost was like as we live in a perpetual, everyday Pentecost, with the Holy Spirit very much at work in our hearts and lives. The Age of the Holy Spirit will con nue un l the day the Lord Jesus returns to Earth as ruler and makes God’s Kingdom fully present on Earth. To borrow a phrase from Father Linehan: “Isn’t this exci ng!?!?” Pentecost also marks the “birthday” of the Church, when the Apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit set off to preach the Good News and make the Sacraments present to all the ends of the Earth. Yesterday, Cardinal Sean O’Malley ordained seven new priests for the Archdiocese of Boston to con nue on this same work, con nuing the 2000 year unbroken line from Jesus commissioning the Twelve to today. Seven more priests is good, but we need more than that! As the o en used phrase says, “Voca ons are everyone’s business.” Let’s start by giving thanks to God for calling these men forth, but let us always con nue to beg the Master of the Harvest that He’ll call more and more men to the priesthood and that those men will respond with generous hearts. While we’re praying, let’s make sure to pray for Father Robert Cullen, who has been appointed to run Saint Margaret Mary parish with the departure of Father Linehan. I have been aware that there is a Father Cullen in the Archdiocese of Boston for a few years now. I’m sure this will come up a few mes, so let me say it for the first me now: Father Cullen and I are not related! (It is funny though, Robert Cullen was my grandfather’s name). I called to introduce myself but was told he’s on vaca on right now, so let’s hope that he returns from his break rested and ready to go. Change is hard, and the transi on to a new pastor is not the only staff change here at St. Margaret Mary’s. I need to say another goodbye this week. Jackie Kerr, our parish administra ve assistant has stepped down from her posi on. Any ease that I had se ling into this posi on 9 months ago is in large part due to Jackie’s presence and help. Please join me in praying for her con nued success, health and happiness. She will be greatly missed by all of us! Yours in the Lord’s Service, Brian Cullen
