WE ARE A TITHING PARISH

God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10% to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our personal charities) in gratitude. This spirituality of tithing is as old as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the tithe, but the tither, not the gift, but the giver—for God!

Tithing -- God’s Plan for Giving “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of Hosts. Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven and pour down blessings upon you without measure?” Malachi 3:10 “He said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none.’” (Luke 13:7)

Stewardship is a Way of Life We can all be like the barren fig tree at times. Do you cling to what you have or do you generously share with others? How will you respond when God asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has given you? Remember, not only are we called to be generous, we are called to develop and nurture our gifts and return with increase.

Tithing of Treasure Weekend of March 17, 2019: $ 8,663.00 Weekend of March 18, 2018: $8,136.00 Children’s Offering for March 17, 2019 (Included in Tithe): $60.25 High School Offering for March 17, 2019 (Included in Tithe): $30.00

Tithing Time and Talent Spending Time with God in Prayer: Borrow a book from our Spiritual Library about Prayer. Using Talents to build God’s Church: A small group of dedicated “Holy Dusters” spend some time after Mass on Thursdays tidying up the church. Come join them!

WWEEKLY MEMORIALS The sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one, either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of $10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting memorial.

The Sanctuary Lamp has been donated this week

in memory of

Frank Jarosiewicz

There were no intentions for the Bread and Wine this week

24 March 2019

Dear Members of the Parish Family, Remarkable happenings in the Scriptures today!

In the first reading, Moses meets God in the burning bush. He is doing an ordinary, every-day activity, tending sheep, and meets the God of the universe, Who reveals His Name to Moses and commissions Him to tell Pharaoh to “Let My people go!” Moses stuttered, yet God chose Him to deliver a message of liberation and invitation to the people of Israel: the invitation to be God’s own holy (set aside) people and enter covenant with the One Who would set them free.

God still comes to us in everyday situations. I

doubt any of us will see a burning bush. However, we all live on “holy ground.” The family which springs from the sacrament of Matrimony, the people born of water and the spirit which issue for from the ministry of priest-hood, the folks in need to whom we tend and for whom we care by our acts of unselfishness and almsgiving—these are all “holy ground” in which we meet God.

This week, be aware of God’s Presence with you

all the time. Drink it in. And, take off your shoes. May we, like Saint Martha, always be friends of

Jesus. God’s Love, Fr. Al

WINNING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE BILLS Each week, remember that our victory over current bills depends on taking in $12,000 or more in the collection. Check the figures posted each week to see how we are doing. Thanks to all whose efforts are helping us in this struggle. Remember to be sure your offering comes every week, even when you are away. Consider electronic giving.

Let Us Pray for Our Deceased Members of the Parish Thomas McAndrews

From the shepherd’s cave… WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO The Prayer Over the Offerings

“I appeal to you, therefore, by the mercies if God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). To conclude the Preparation of the Gifts, the priest appeals to the assembly: “Pray, brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” Called to pray, the people stand and make their response, holding themselves in readiness for the Mystery about to unfold. The Mass engages not the priest alone, nor the people apart from the priest, but the people offering with the priest and through his ministry. “The Eucharist is a celebration of the whole Church, and in it each one should carry out solely but completely that which pertains to him or her, in virtue of the rank of each within the People of God” (GIRM, art.5). “When we say ours, we make no distinction among persons or groups. But there is a distinction to be made here, and a great truth to proclaim. The priest is not simply one of us, but the man whom God has chosen to offer the sacrifice on our behalf. That is what he means when he calls it my sacrifice. Then he says it is also ours. For we too are priests of God, a holy peo-ple, a nation set apart” (Magnificat. Roman Missal Companion, p. 61). The Prayer Over the Offerings follows. It asks God to receive the offerings set before Him and to give us, in exchange, the surpassing gift of Himself. The faithful, uniting themselves to this prayer, make it their own by sealing it with the acclama-tion, Amen. This prayer concludes the Offertory Rite.

PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be regis-tered and active members of the parish. Circumstances some-times change registration status. If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered cor-rectly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away from you paren-tal home (not just for college)? (2) Have you recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with your parents, over eighteen, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the rectory office to update your registration status. New families moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass. Welcome!

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and become God’s own children, members of the family we call Church. You may arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are required (and godparents invited but not required) to attend a Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday evening, May 9, at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a couple who have presented children for baptism give an overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day. Con-sider coming to the class before your baby is born, when things are just a bit less hectic.

“SPOTLIGHT ON ST. MARTHA SCHOOL” SPAT (Strategic Planning Assistance Team met last week and discussed enrollment, finances, strategies and sugges-tions to raise money for SMS. We need one successful fundraiser that involves everyone from our school and parish family’s help and participation. Do you have any suggestions? Call or email me (215-632-0320 or [email protected]). We have the carnival and auction, however, they are parish functions. It’s essential we find something that generate money for the upkeep of the school. Our Race for Education helps the school and this year the money is go-ing to Ballroom Dancing, Option C (we are switching form My Students Progress and need training and for the cost of the program), Math Matters, and tech support and supplies for STREAM activi-ties. All money raised for the school stays in the school and helps our budget. We have many extra activities at SMS such as: chil-dren’s choir, bell choir, cantors, readers, Pumpkin Face Contest, T shirt Tuesday (monies go to the Sue Blesi Scholarship Fund), As-semblies, Penny Walk (monies are given to families in need), Fa-ther/Daughter and Mother/Son Socials, Yearbook Committee, Stu-dent Council, Christmas Pageant, Christmas with the Kids, students perform in Ryan’s plays, Ballroom Dancing, Spaghetti Dinner, Color Games, Dance-a-thon, Police and Firefighter Recognition Breakfast, Grade Masses, Art and Music classes, class trips, Sacra-mental meetings for parents, retreats, Showcase of Excellence, Peer Tutoring, Living Stations, Adoration, Stations of the Cross, Race for Education, May Procession, Reading Olympics, Step Up Day, Bac-calaureate Mass, Award Ceremony and the list goes on. Lots of good things are happening behind the scenes every day and most recently, because of SPAT, I presented every kindergarten parent a “Welcome to First Grade” Grant of $1,000. Any child entering our first grade for 2019-2020 school year will receive the $1,000 “Welcome to First Grade” Grant. Spread the Word! We also have a $1500 Transfer Grant for children registering in grades 2-7 from Public, Private and Charter School. Continued: Our Board of Limited Jurisdiction is off to a great start with a dedicated group of people who have a shared vision for SMS. In the next couple of weeks I will share a short biography written by the committee members themselves. Jim Hennessy “My wife and I have been members of St. Martha for 43 years. Our three children all went the full 8 years to St. Martha and also to Archbishop Ryan High School. I am presently the Chairman of the Facilities Committee for the Board of Limited Jurisdiction. I was asked to join the Board and I thought it was a great idea and oppor-tunity to give back to St. Martha after my children received such a tremendous education and a chance also to give back to St. Martha Parish for all that they have added to my development as a Catholic. I have also been involved with the Cub Pack at St. Martha in the past. I was on the committee for about 5 years and was a den mother for 2 of those years. I participated in fundraising events over the years. I also was involved with the High School CYO for about 5-6 years and being on the Board presents me with an opportunity to serve St. Martha School. My job as Facilities Chair is to help set up a plan to improve the buildings and the grounds of St. Martha School and hopefully to implement programs that will increase safety and welfare of the children and to attempt to cut some of the costs of the various utilities. Yes, Yes, SMS!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE “40 days for life”, Prayer and Witness for Life begins March 6 and ends April 14, 2019. . During this time, we are asked to pray and fast for the following intentions: An end to legalized abortion in our country For the mothers who are so desperate they believe abortion

is their only option - that they may seek the help that is available

For those who work in the abortion industry For our society as a whole, that they may turn away from

the culture of death We are also asked to join in peaceful prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood, 2751 Comly Road, Philadelphia. St. Mar-tha’s Parish has agreed to cover the vigil hours from 7 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday, March 27. Please note the sign up sheets at the church entrances and choose one hour on March 27 . If you wish you may join any of the vigils outside of abortion facili-ties in the Philadelphia area during the 40 days. Prayer outside an abortion facility is very important and effective. Women do change their minds.
