LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE: All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal & avoiding food between meals. Two other lighter meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Stations of the Cross will be held in the Church every Thursday at 2:00PM and every Friday at 7:30PM during Lent. OPERATION RICE BOWL: We encounter Cesia in Nicaragua, where, despite a lack of economic opportunity, young people pursue their dreams by building businesses to better their lives. How can you work to improve the lives of others this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more info. Rice Bowls should be returned at Mass on the Fifth Sunday of Lent– March 18th.

Lent II Persevere!

On this second Sunday of Lent, we are given the gospel of the Transfiguration of the

Lord. Ancient tradition holds that the Transfiguration of Jesus occurred 40 days before Good Friday. The central figures of the Transfiguration are Jesus’ “inner circle” of apostles: Peter, James, and John. It is these 3 only who are present for the raising of the daughter of Jairus. Peter was the first Pope, James was the first apostle-martyr, and John was simply the favorite. Ironically, it is these 3 who wanted to avoid the cross at all costs. Peter tried to talk Jesus out of the cross, and is thus called “Satan” by Jesus. The brothers James and John have the nickname “Boanerges” which means “sons of thunder.” In the gospel of Luke, while on the way to Jerusalem James, John and Jesus pass through Samaria, where the people reject Jesus’s journey because Jesus is going to the cross. James and John want to call down fire from heaven to destroy them, thus, “sons of thunder.”

St. Thomas Aquinas believed Jesus was transfigured before these three men in order to strengthen them for what was about to happen to Jesus. St. Thomas writes: “For a person to travel a difficult road, he must have some knowledge of the end in order to persevere.” And so the Transfiguration takes place before the crucifixion to remove the doubt and despair that might occur as a result of the cross. Jesus drops His humanity for the briefest moment. Peter, James, and John see a brilliant flash of the Divinity of just who this Jesus is. Jesus is Divinity veiled in humanity. There is more here than just a mere human being. They received a glimpse of Jesus’ true Divine Nature to sustain them for the coming “scandal” of the cross.

As a result, they remain silent. They do not understand. We are very much like them. We only see the “human” Jesus and do not get a glimpse of the “Divine” Jesus. Peter, James, and John saw that—quicker than a flashbulb. They were shown a glory beyond their imagining. But it must have been magnificent, because it was enough for them to persevere in the face of the “scandal” of the cross.

This second Sunday of Lent, we are given this gospel of the Transfiguration so that we also might not lose heart in our trials. Like Peter, James, and John, we are given a glimpse of the target—the glorified Christ—that awaits those who remain faithful unto Him.

Keep going! - Fr. Gerard Gordon

“Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day” - Pope Francis Dear Friends: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2018 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 con-tribution this year – think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others!

THANK YOU!

STEWARDSHIP Our Way of Life

SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS: Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. St. Paul reminds us that God Himself “did not spare His own Son.” Are my gifts to the Lord – of my resources, of my time, of myself – also sacrificial? During these 40 days and beyond, we incorporate more deeply the Lenten disciplines of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. Prayer provides a way to give back to God some share of the time that we’ve been given and is also a very powerful way to make ourselves available to God in order to see more clearly the ways He is calling us to use the many other gifts with which He has blessed us. LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who, through prayer, become more conscious of their faith and its power in their lives. CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, faith, and coordinating shared with us by our RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS team. Parishioners journey with individuals who are seeking initiation into our Catholic faith. Call Deacon Richard (516-293-2735) to help or for more information. PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP: 2/18/18 Collection: $12,797.00 Church in Need 2018: $2,129 2/20/17 Collection: $13,836.00 Church in Need 2017: $2,201.00

Thank you for sharing your gifts of treasure.

Lord, during this holy season of Lent, we offer to You our desire to discover, recognize, and fulfill our role in Your plan

for building Your Kingdom. Amen.

EMPLOYMENT MINISTRY: At St. Martin’s Employment Program we maintain a database of personnel seeking employment in the local Long Island market. We assist them by providing counseling services including resume development and by making available a wide range of job search capabilities. Our extensive client database covers a wide range of employment experi-ence ranging from office work, sales help, factory work, food handling, home care, and companions to assist the elderly. If you can help, we can use volunteers on Mondays & Wednesdays, for just four hours per day, to assist people in finding suitable jobs. We need parishioners who can interview clients, prepare resumes, and perform job searches. If you wish to help please call Frank, Kathy, or Rosemary during regular office hours or leave a message. This ministry is staffed by volun-teer case workers. Phone: 631-598-2378; Fax: 631-598-2380 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Monday & Wednesday, 10:00AM-2:00PM, in Outreach Office. LOVE FOR ALL, HATE FOR NONE: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association of Long Island chapter invites you to our (ladies only) Interfaith Meeting: Freedom of Expression and Respect for Religious Beliefs. The meeting will take place on Sunday, March 4th from 3:00PM to 5:00PM @ Bait-ul-huda in Amityville, NY 11701 (64 Union Ave.). Guest Speakers from Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. For further information and to RSVP, call 516-592-9501 or email [email protected].

SOCIAL MINISTRY  RESPECT LIFE: As Jesus Christ posed the question to Peter, so, too, does He pose the question to each one of us, “Do you love me?” If we responded with yes, then we must live that out no matter what the cost. We cannot separate our professional life from our faith life. We must put the law of God above the law of man, especially as it concerns the dignity of the human person and the life of the unborn. (Bishop Samuel J. Aquila, Diocese of Fargo, ND). The February Life News is available as you leave Church. We ask that you pick up a copy for your information. POINSETTIA SALE: The Columbiettes were very happy to present the Suffolk Birthright with a check for $500. We thank all the parishioners for their support of our Annual Poinsettia Sale; Because of you, we were able to help this worthy organization.
