Fruit of the Spirit: Self-Control

For you were called for freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another. I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh." Galatians 5:13-16

Key to cooperating with the Holy Spirit is docility, openness. This is the way of Mary, her fiat indicating complete openness to the will of the Father. Mary completely trusted God, and allowed the Holy Spirit to overshadow her. Consider the deep union and communion with God in Mary's gift of herself to the Incarnation.

Self-control relates to this ability to be open, receptive to the Holy Spirit and others. This can be exercised in modesty of speech and thought. Confidence in the Holy Spirit is a fruit of interior peace of Christ. For example, why am I compelled to interrupt someone else, to interject "my thoughts?" To engage in gossip, or feel justified in detraction? These behaviors could reveal a lack of confidence in the Holy Spirit.

Self-control also relates to an overr iding theme in Galatians 5, that of chaste living. One who knows self-control becomes not less of a gift, but a greater gift to others! The grace to grow in moderation of thought and speech shows growth in virtue, and reveals a deep trust in the Holy Spirit, in God's providence and the mercy of Jesus. Christ's love heals us of our compulsive sinful behaviors; of our need to champion self and of the temptation to use others as objects. Confession brings light to dark places that can know new peace. And we, as those chosen to manifest the love of the Father, are no longer subject to the tyranny of self-will. We can truly learn to prefer one another out of reverence for Christ. This will be evident in our communities as the fruit of self-control. Fr. Tim ___________________________________________________________

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTION FOR MAY: That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today.

PENTECOST SUNDAY: St. Paul reminds us today that all of our gifts have their source in the Holy Spirit and that those gifts are given “for the common good.” What gifts are mine to share?

THANK YOU for your donations to the Mother’s Day envelopes that helped beautify the church for Mother’s Day and the Solemnity of the Ascension. The names of your mothers, living and deceased, have been entered in the book that was placed on the Marian altar to be prayed for at all Masses.

FATHER’S DAY ENVELOPES are now available in the pews for an honorary or memorial gift and your donations will help adorn the altar for Father’s Day.

Faith Enrichment

The Basic Teachings of the Catholic Faith program offers a general introduction to the theological principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While some of the courses are primarily for catechists, they are general enough to offer content useful to any Catholic adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings and in so doing, become better equipped for Christian discipleship and evangelization. Each of the five segments offers 6 Diocesan clock hours of instruction. $50 for all five classes. FREE for Saint Mary Cathedral parishioners who serve, or seek to serve, in Faith Formation ministry. Call the CFF office at 512-476-6182 for more information.

Moreover, we look to Mary as the Mother of Our Savior and Mother of the Church, who is always leading us to a deeper relationship with her Son,’ he said” (Cindy Wooden, Catholic News Service, taken from https://austindiocese.org/pope-adds-marian-feast-to-universal-church-calendar)/

Question: How do we know when we receive the Holy Spirit?

Answer: My brothers and I discovered something as we got older. There's a little bit of dad in us. Each time we catch ourselves using one of his gestures, expressions, or comments about a meal, we say, "I'm getting more like Dad!" Many laughs and good-natured kidding have come out of it. Mom loves it, and so does Dad, although I doubt he'd admit it!

When we are confirmed, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There is no radical change in us that makes us seem suddenly different. Over a period of time, we come to see that there is a little bit of the Spirit in us. We catch our-selves using the gifts, and often end up wondering where a bit of wisdom came from, or why we were so patient or we feel an intensity in our prayer. Perhaps we felt drawn to deepen our spiritual life or found courage in witnessing to our faith. That's when we know we have received the Holy Spirit. We take on his image. Yes, we grow in age, grace, and wisdom, but we also grow in our awareness and understanding of the working of God in our life. We become more godlike, realizing we're getting more and more like God. Our thoughts, words, and actions carry that quality and others, too, see it in us. You might call it holiness. But be confident! There's a little bit of him in all of us.
