Third Sunday of Easter

2

I sometimes wonder about St. Mary and the transitions she experienced as Jesus went through his Passion, Resurrection and appearances afterwards. What was her role within the community of disciples? As they asked a lot of questions about the appearances of the Resurrected Lord, as they began to move into the newness of life with the Resurrection. How did she handle the Ascension of Jesus to heaven? Was there a sense of loss and gain? How did the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost move all of the disciples into a place of extreme joy and mission? What becomes clear in the book of Acts is that joy characterizes those who have experienced the Resurrected Lord. This will be accompanied by great zeal at Pentecost. How do we maintain this Easter joy? I find encouragement in the words of Jean-Pierre de Caussade in Abandonment to Divine Providence—the key in the title, to abandon oneself to the will of the Father, through faith in the Son: “Work, contemplation or prayer whether vocal, or mental, active or passive; the prayer of faith or of understanding; that which is distinguished in kind, or gifted with universal grace: it is all nothing, Lord, unless made real and useful by Your will. It is to Your holy will that I devote myself and not to any of these things, however high and sublime they may be, because it is the perfection of the heart for which grace is given, and not for that of the mind.” “The presence of God which sanctifies our souls is the dwelling of the Holy Trinity in the depths of our hearts when they submit to His holy will. The act of the presence of God made in contemplation effects this intimate union only like other acts that are according to the order of God.” In other words, each moment of our existence can be filled with the presence of God. We have but to surrender the moment to Him, allowing him to take our surrender as an act of abandon. Does Mary not, after all, teach us that it’s ok to completely trust the will of the merciful Father with abandon? I believe this disposition of abandon (not blind trust, rather a cooperation with grace in acknowledging God’s goodness) key to building a secure foundation for a life of Easter joy. Fr. Tim

New Book Study! On Monday, May 6, Cathedral Book Study Group will begin New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton at 6:30pm in the Sheehan Room. One of Merton’s most widely read and best-loved books, it seeks to awaken the dormant inner depths of the spirit so long neglected by Western man, to nurture a deeply contempla-tive and mystical dimension in our lives.

Catholic Scripture Study: Thursdays, 7:00-9:00pm, For questions email [email protected].

must ensure it has an ample number of priests to celebrate the sacraments, preach God’s word and guide us on our journey with Christ. To endure our priests are well-prepared, a man in formation will pursue a quality education in philos-ophy, theology and pastoral care. Seminarian education and formation in the Diocese of Austin can take up to nine years. Financial impediments should never prevent men from responding to God’s call to the priesthood. Some financial support for priests and seminarians is made available from the Catholic Services Appeal and a Seminarian Endowment in the Catholic Foundation, but the needs far exceed what our annual appeal can support. This special collection provides additional support for this very important effort. Please be generous.

–Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Everyday Stewardship

I am struck by how Jesus addresses the disciples in the 21st chapter of John. They have been fishing all night, and when the dawn comes, Jesus asks, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?" They hadn't caught a thing, so he tells them what to do to finally fill their nets. These children thought they knew best, but they couldn't get the job done until they listened to Jesus. Like a child who needs a parent, these early followers of Jesus were learning that real maturity of faith requires trusting in and listening to the Teacher.

The stewardship way of life demands of us a certain maturi-ty of discipleship. Just as a child is not yet ready to be a parent, an immature disciple may not yet be ready to sacrifice regardless of the cost or understand the true value of his generosity. So every day, we are challenged and called to respond, sometimes even with little cost to ourselves. But each step, no matter how small, brings with it growth. We are growing not only in maturity, but in the ability to trust in God and how to listen for the call as well.

How mature are you in your faith? How much trust do you have in Jesus Christ? How often do you pause to listen to the instructions of your Teacher? The night is now over, and the dawn is upon you. Reflect on the visible fruit of your stewardship, and then listen for the words of Jesus. – Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Howdy all, Alex Odom here, that inordinately tall seminarian you’ve seen around the Cathedral campus since the beginning of last summer. I’m sad to say that our time together is coming to an end rather soon. Sunday the 19th of May will be my last day here helping out with the parish Masses and liturgical coordinating. I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your dedica-tion to God and his Church. I have found this parish to be highly supportive in my time here as the seminarian and pray that you will continue to be supportive of your priests and seminarians in the future. Please pray for me as I continue my journey in pursuit of God’s will for my life. Know that I will keep you and your journey in my own prayers. God bless, Alex
