Second Sunday of Lent

2

I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.

No

one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You

are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends,

because I have told you everything I have heard from my

Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed

you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

This

I command you: love one another. (New American Bible, Jn 15:11–17).

Last week in this column I spoke about the movement inward, interior prayer, the willingness to set aside —perhaps as a Lenten practice—time in prayer each day. This is how we train ourselves to be open to God’s love and grace.

Indeed, it is not possible to live the Christian life without prayer! The journey has both inward and outward dimensions.

Who authors our particular vocations? We find ourselves called to many beautiful, challenging and rich vocations: marriage; fatherhood/motherhood (this can also be spiritual); active religious life; contemplative religious life; the permanent diaconate; the ministerial priesthood. It is the Lord who calls us, who authors these vocations. He draws us more deeply into the Father’s love through our particular vocations, through those activities which are the daily grist of these vocations. And our vocations are grounded in the sacraments. Who is active in the sacraments, always meeting us there with our faith? Jesus.

We must take time to know the voice of the Good Shepherd, the Master Teacher. We learn then to follow, wherever he leads. In today’s Gospel he leads a select, inner group of disciples up the mountain, Mt. Tabor where his glory shines forth in Transfiguration. And there he is met by pilgrims from an earlier age, Moses and Elijah. From this point forward in Luke’s Gospel he sets his face towards Jerusalem. This is a long journey, as Mt. Tabor is in the region of Galilee, to the north. The journey would take Jesus back south to the desert, then up to the hills of Jerusalem. It would take him to the Cross, the place that becomes the wellspring of salvation as his Blood and Water flow from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He does not go the journey alone, but with his disciples, fellow pilgrims.

I share a couple of pictures from Mt. Tabor here: the one of the beautiful church on top of the mountain, where sunlight enters through windows to remind of the transfigured glory of our Lord. The other, of a pilgrim who was called, like each one of us, to a particular vocation. The interesting things about pilgrims? They do not travel alone! Yes - this is a selfie, however, the other pilgrims I traveled with were quietly making their way back to our bus. As we journey this road of repentance let us continue to seek the Lord where He may be found. Yes, we enter into the interior in prayer, but we always journey together. Those we sit next to at Mass on Sunday are fellow pilgrims. Those we have a great

affinity for and with whom we share deeply our faith: fellow pilgrims. Strangers in the store, on the bus, driving past us on the high-way: fellow pilgrims or perhaps future pilgrims. His love takes root deep within and then calls us outwards towards and with others. Perhaps we could pause a moment the next time we are at Saint Mary Cathedral and consider, who is the fellow pilgrim to my left or right? Have I taken a moment to pray for them, to greet them, to recognize in them the image of God? Maybe I am reciprocating their prayer for me! Fr. Tim

¡No viajan solos! Ver EL RINCÓN DEL RECTOR pág. 6

Where do you live? I live in North Carolina. There I pay tax-es, own a home, and belong to a parish. North Carolina is in the United States, so I also abide by federal laws, pay taxes, and vote for candidates in all sorts of elections. I identify as an American and try my best to meet certain expectations placed on me by the government, state, and fellow Ameri-cans. I do certain things because of my identity.

Paul wrote to the Philippians, "Our citizenship is in heaven." Being a U.S. citizen living in North Carolina places certain requirements on me. How many of us "citizens of heaven" take seriously the expectations and requirements of that citizenship? Sometimes we act like nothing is truly required of us.

Stewardship as a way of life requires us to take seriously what it means to be a citizen of heaven. We are called to fol-low the laws of the land we live in on this earth, but we are called to adhere to an even greater authority. Whether it be our call to act with charity and love or to follow the precepts of the Church, we must take seriously our status as citizen.

Unfortunately, many don't take seriously their citizenship on this earth either. People have given their very lives so that we may have to freedom to be citizens of our country and our state. Of course, many people have died for the citizenship of heaven as well. So it comes down to the question, who are you and to whom do you belong? -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Prayer for an end to infanticide. The U. S. Senate recently failed to

pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act—legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. Please join us in prayer for an end to infanticide. Note: To determine your senators’ votes on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, go to: http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/born-alive-bill.cfm
