May the peace of Christ be with you,
As we enter into the Advent season we prepare
ourselves for the coming of the Lord. The
readings refer to the coming of Jesus at the end
of the world, and then begin to shift to the first
coming of Jesus, 2020 years ago in Bethlehem.
St. Bernard of Clairvaux reflects that there is a
third coming between the other two, and that is
when Jesus comes to us in prayer, in spirit and in
power. “Because this coming lies between the
other two, it is like a road on which we travel
form the first coming to the last. In the first,
Christ was our redemption; in the last, he will
appear as our life; in this middle coming, he is
our rest and consolation. In case someone should
think that what we say about this middle coming
is sheer invention, listen to what our Lord
himself says; “If anyone loves me, he will keep
my word, and my Father will love him, and we
will come to him” (John 14:23). This coming of
Christ is a very real way that we can celebrate
Christmas as not just a remembrance of
something that happened long ago, nor merely
thinking about what will happen in the future.
We can invite Jesus into our hearts this year, to
dwell in us and renew us as a living temple of
God.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem at the beginning
of his public ministry, he cleansed the temple of
moneychangers and those selling doves, and
livestock for the sacrifices. He said, “Take these
out of here and stop making my Father’s house a
marketplace.” He went on to answer the Jews
who asked for a sign for doing this, “Destroy this
temple and in three days I will raise it up.” He
was referring to the temple of his body (John
2:16-20). Jesus as both God and man, had the
Holy Spirit dwelling in his human body and soul
as in a temple. This indwelling happens to each
of us when we are baptized and filled with the
Holy Spirit.
The season of Advent is a good time to invite
Jesus to “cleanse our temple” by forgiving us of
our sins and healing us of any impurities of soul.
St. Caesarius of Arles writes on the feast day of
the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran,
“Whenever we come to church, we must prepare
our hearts to be as beautiful as we expect this
church to be. Do you wish to find this basilica
immaculately clean? Then do not soil your soul
with the filth of sins. Do you wish this basilica to
be full of light? God too wishes that your soul be
not in darkness, but that the light of good works
shines in us. Just as you enter this church
building, so God wishes to enter into your soul,
for he promised, ‘I shall live in them, and I shall
walk the corridors of their hearts.’”
Every Catholic is obligated to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year.
This season of Advent is a good time to go and
allow Christ to wipe away your sins, and fill you
with the light and glory of the Holy Spirit, to
come to you with the Father and the Holy Spirit
and make his dwelling within you.
In next Sunday’s gospel, Mark 1:1-8, we see
John the Baptist preaching in the desert. “People
of the whole Judean countryside and all the
inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him
and were being baptized by him in the Jordan
River as they acknowledged their sins.” We see
that it was a common practice to confess one’s
sins in order to be cleansed of them. John’s
baptism was a baptism of repentance, while
Jesus would come to baptize in fire and the Holy
Spirit. Not only does the baptism of Jesus
cleanse us of our sins, it also fills us with the
Holy Spirit so that we become temples of the
Holy Spirit, and adopted sons and daughters of
God the Father. We renew our baptism every
time we bless ourselves with holy water and
make the sign of the cross, as we were baptized
“in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit.”
God Bless you,
Fr. Andrew Beerman
Even though we may not be able to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, we can make an act of spiritual Communion. My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all
things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You
sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my
heart. I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me
to be separated from You. Amen.
