PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
“Merry Christmas” “Happy Easter” . . . What about
Pentecost? What’s the greeting for the 3rd
of the 3 great
Christian feasts? And where’s the celebrating? Maybe we
should be glad that culture has not hijacked Pentecost as it
has Christmas & Easter. Maybe this can help us keep
Pentecost pure & holy. But also, maybe, this means that
Pentecost is the neglected member of the family, the lost
sheep, the unappreciated sister. If Christmas is hollow
without Easter, then certainly Easter is incomplete,
unfulfilled, without Pentecost. It is the Spirit’s presence
that causes the indwelling Father & the Son in our lives.
Here’s a prayer, a hymn even, to help give Pentecost
some prominence, at least in our prayer. It’s the very
ancient Pentecost hymn Veni Creator Spiritus (Come
Creator Spirit). It will never have a place to rival
Christmas’ Silent Night or Easter’s Jesus Christ is Risen
Today, but let’s give it a chance.
Creator Spirit, Lord of grace,
Come make in us your dwelling place!
O purest Light, in darkness shine;
Fill loveless hearts, O Love divine!
O Spirit, hear your people’s cry!
Come down, O Gift of God most high!
Descend in peace, O heav’nly Dove;
Come, fount of life; come, flame of love!
As once on Christ the Servant’s head
The oil of sev’nfold grace you shed,
So now anoint from love’s deep springs
Your chosen prophets, priests, & kings!
Of ev’ry gift the living source,
Of mighty deeds the unseen force,
The Father sends his Promised One
To speak for all who serve his Son!
Veni Creator Spiritus is a liturgical hymn over 1,000
years old. Historically, its place was in the Liturgy of the
Hours but also came to be used as the official opening
prayer for Church councils & synods. It is recited & sung
by the faithful all over the world at the start of important
undertakings, such as the beginning of a school year, at
conventions, missions, retreats & the like. Interestingly, it
is the only ancient hymn of the breviary (the book of the
Liturgy of the Hours) that was retained in the official
prayer book of the Protestant Episcopal Church (in their
service of ordination). You may recognize it from the
abbreviated version we’ve sung so often, Come, Holy
Ghost. For you with a musical bent, it has its own tune,
but its meter is called “Long Meter”—used in tunes like
the “Old 100th” (“All People that on Earth Do Dwell”).
Besides prayer, how about a spiritual exercise for “keep-
ing Pentecost” this year. Do you remember learning “The
12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit?” What the child learns, the
adult discerns—now not in a catechism, but in the events
of our lives & the attitudes of our minds & hearts. Do you
know the fruits in a new way, not as a list learned, but as
an experience that the Holy Spirit is a "Person" of our God
& a presence in our lives? Here’s the traditional list:
1. Charity 2. Joy 3. Peace 4. Patience
5. Kindness 6. Goodness 7. Long-suffering 8. Humility
9. Fidelity 10. Modesty 11. Continence 12. Chastity
(The Scriptural listing, on which these are based, is in
Galatians 5:22: “In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control.”) What evidence of these 12 (or
9) fruits do you see, what progress, in your own life? Give
examples. Tell someone. And, just as important, in whom
do you see these fruits? If you were asked to name 12
people, each of them embodying a particular fruit of the
Spirit, who would they be?
The 75th
anniversary of D-Day was last Thursday, June
6. I can’t let it go without mention. Recently I watched a
program about World War II that described that day. I
glimpsed soldiers with rosaries at one point. There was
also footage of a chaplain giving communion to soldiers
ready to make the crossing: He was praying with them. It
was only in the background, so his words were difficult to
hear & only partial. He was saying a prayer—line by line,
having the soldier repeat each line after him. One phrase
stood out in particular: “to fight & not heed the wounds.”
It was the unmistakable prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola
that he was using: Dearest Lord,/ teach me to be
generous:/ teach me to serve you as you deserve;/ to give
& not to count the cost,/ to fight & not to heed the
wounds,/ to toil & not to seek for rest,/ to labor & not to
ask for reward/ save that of knowing I am doing your will. (If you’re not familiar with this you may want to be.)
On a lighter note, a day brightener. (I have a collection
of these, so they don’t get lost—so they can brighten more
than one day.) It was last Sunday. We were still singing
the recessional of the 10:00 Mass & I’d just gotten to the
entry. A man was holding & bouncing little 3-year-old
Piper who hadn’t quite made it to the end of Mass. She
was busy (what 3-year-old isn’t?) but paused &, giving me
the once-over, said, “I like your costume.”
Wednesdays are a little quieter these summer days &
there are no Sunday morning catechism visits between
Masses. There’s a pause in our religious education pro-
grams. But in a deeper sense, there isn’t. 1st, religious
education isn’t only a “program;” it’s a regular part of our
lives. It’s ongoing. And 2nd
, it isn’t only education. It’s
formation. Faith & all we learn about God & Christ & his
Church & the virtues & prayer is formative. It needs to be
the most influential part of our life—not the culture, not
our jobs, not the daily routine, but our faith. So even tho at
this time of the year our faith formation “program” pauses,
much of what it’s really all about can continue.
