NCYC Fundraiser

The Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) begins this weekend. This is your opportunity to assist the Diocese its ministry and ultimately our parish. The Diocese of

Davenport administers to 77 parishes and 18 Catholic Schools. The money is used for priests and deacons formation, youth ministries, religious education for adults, annulments, maintains archives for parishes, along with salaries for diocesan employees including the bishop. It is only with the support given to the ADA that these ministries are able to exist and flourish.

HTC News: Monday mornings have a reputation for being a bit of a drag. However, at Holy Trinity

Elementary our students start their week by gathering together for a Monday morning assembly. The students all come together to join in singing a worship song, saying a prayer, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and celebrating their classmates who have a birthday during the week. This past Monday, Ms. Schumaker even explained to the students that as we gather together we are all part of God's loving church. What a wonderful way for our students to recognize God's love for them and to share our faith together. Monday mornings are a time of joy and celebration!

Have you received your invitation yet? The HTC Foundation Board has established the Heritage Society, a Planned Giving Program, to recognize those individuals who have made a commitment to carrying Catholic Education into the future by designating a portion of their Estate to benefit HTC Schools through the HTC Foundation, upon their passing. This can be done through your Will, or through various beneficiary designations using Life Insurance Policies, IRA/Retirement accounts, or other Assets. The HTC Foundation Board will be having a brunch reception on Wednesday, November 20, following the 8:45 a.m. weekly HTC School Mass in West Point, to honor and thank our current Heritage Society members. If you haven’t already received your invitation, and you have HTC in your Estate Plan, PLEASE let me know, so I can send you an invite! Please contact Joshua Ragar, HTC Development Director, at 837-8006 or at [email protected] so I can get you an invitation to our upcoming event.

Today’s Gospel a rich man ask for mercy. “ Father Abraham, have mercy on me.” The rich man was definitely a descendant of Abraham, and the great father of faith did not disown him. Yet having Abraham as father was not enough to escape his torment in the life to come. Now the rich man was the beggar, pleading with Abraham. The rich man was not in torment because he was rich; but because he lived a life apart from love and trust in God, and this was demonstrated by his life. (Abraham himself was richer than the man in this story of Jesus.) The rich man recognized Lazarus and asked that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool his tongue: Even in the afterlife the rich man thought of himself as superior and as Lazarus as his servant. This shows that death did not take away his sense of entitlement and station in life nor could he plead ignorant of knowing Lazarus, for he recognized him at once. Death did not take away the rich man’s sense of desire, only the fulfillment of that desire. This was true torment, and he was desperate for even a drop of relief. Through his earthly life the rich man enjoyed all the good things of life; yet did not share them or use them to prepare for the life to come.

With this story Jesus showed the weakness of trusting in signs to bring people to faith. It is easy to think that if people saw a spectacular enough sign, they would be compelled to believe. But what creates faith unto salvation is hearing the Word of God, a sign may or may not have a role in that work. God, working through His word, has power unto salvation.

Wealth can be a blessing or a curse, depending on whether it is used as a means to exercise power, a tool of self-indulgence or a resource to serve others. Wealth's danger is that it can turn our focus toward our own enjoyment. Money is a tool. It is an excellent resource when put to the right use. To possess money is also to hold a sacred stewardship. Our resources are not to be privately held and consumed but are to be used as a means of generosity, as a way of showing care for our neighbor. It doesn’t matter if you have wealth or not it is how we follow the Gospel and share our gifts with others that will matter when we die. Our status in this life does not indicate our spiritual status and is

nowhere near as important as our place after this life.

St. Boniface would like to thank the Fall Dinner committee members along with the parish members that help make the fall dinner a success. Everyone’s generous outpouring of time, talent and treasure allows St. Boniface to continue to make Disciples of Christ in the community and parish. The committee would also like to thank the neighboring parishes for showing their support by joining in the fun, food and fellowship. This year’s $500.00 raffle winner was Joe Krebill, congratulations!

G.I.F.T. (Growing In Faith

Together) gathered on

Wednesday, September

18th at 7:00pm in the

Ossenbrink Center. The

topic was on what it takes to become a priest, deacon,

brother, monk, nun or sister. Did you know it takes at least 6

to 8 years to become a priest and 5 years to become a deacon.

A deacon may do everything a priest does except celebrate

Mass and confirmation, or last rites. Nuns and sisters are two

different callings.

Each week at G.I.F.T. there will be a different topic looked at

and discussed relating to our Catholic faith. Please join us!
