Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

Encounter Ona Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, we remember that, Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is important to help people fulfill their potential. And everyone must receive a fair wage for themselves and their families.

Ona always knew she wanted to be a “shining woman” in her community—and an example to her two young daughters. She studied hard and eventually earned her teaching degree from a university. But in Gaza, jobs are hard to find. Even though Ona had been a good student, she could not find work as a teacher. “The financial situation was so difficult,” Ona says. “I started to feel hopeless.” That’s why CRS matches workers with job opportunities. Through CRS, Ona applied for an internship as a teacher and was hired to teach math. Ona knew she wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity. “I took time to ask questions and learn. I tried to better myself—and become a better teacher.” Through her internship, Ona gained the confidence and inspiration to branch out on her own. She saved enough money to open a tutoring center. She now helps students of all ages with their math skills, as well as with other subjects. After one month in business, 41 children had visited her center. “When people encourage you, you start to think in a more creative way,” Ona says. As she thinks about the future, she thinks of her children. “I hope I can be an example to my daughters. I hope that my daughters can achieve their dreams.”

THE FEAST OF THE DIVINE MERCY

The Feast of The Divine Mercy will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Fort Madison, April 28, 2019. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will begin at 2:30 PM and continue thru The Divine Mercy Holy Hour, which begins at 3:00 PM, the Hour of Great Mercy. Mass will be celebrated at 4:00 PM. As written in St. Faustino's Diary, Jesus tells her, "I desire the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor

sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." (Diary 699) Come and celebrate The Feast of The Divine Mercy and partake of Jesus' unfathomable Mercy, forgiveness and love.

If you can help out at any of our Holy Week Masses it would be greatly appreciated. To sign up for a ministry please call the parish office or go to westpointstmary.org click on the stewardship button and you can submit your name along with your Mass

and Ministry preference.

Burlington Divine Mercy Parishes are working toward getting a bus for the Chrism Mass in Davenport on Sunday, April 15th. The Mass this year is at 2:30 in the afternoon. Our parishes have been invited to ride the bus, attend the Mass and go to Machine Shed for dinner. The cost of the bus is going to be around $20-$25. The bus would leave around 12pm. If interested please contact Heather, the Divine Mercy parish administrator at [email protected].

Sheila Brune, an ex-parishioner of St. Mary’s and registered nurse, traveled to the poorest part of rural, southern India earlier this year on a medical mission to help end gendercide (the killing of baby girls). The mission was impactful and life changing. She was able to witness the Rhema Project in action. It is estimated that up to one million girls from newborns to age three go missing every year in India. The Rhema Project is successfully changing the horrific cultural practices of

gender-specific abortion, infanticide, starvation and abuse of the girl child. During Sheila’s time she witnessed the hand of God working to save lives. She will present “The Miracle Mission” on April 10th at 2:00 pm in the Ossenbrink Center. The Fireworks Committee will be having a Fish Fry on Friday April 19th from 5-8 PM. It will be held at the West Point American Legion Hall. We will serve Fish, baked beans, coleslaw, fried potatoes, bread and butter. The cost will be $10 for Adults and $5 for children ages 10 and under and children under 2 are free. All proceeds will go towards our annual Fireworks Display, scheduled for Saturday, June 29th.

Prayer and reflection is such an important part of Lent. We are so blessed to give our students the opportunities for prayer and to practice the Stations of the Cross during the school week throughout this Lenten season. In particular, for our elementary students, they learn of the crucifixion and Jesus' suffering on the cross for us, but also how we must give of ourselves to others. Thank you to Ms. Schumaker for making this religion class time so impactful. We are looking forward to our Penance service at school and to celebrating Easter with our families.

HTC Bunny Hop Run/Walk 5K and 10K will be on Saturday, April 20th at the West Point Town Square. Registration starts at 8:00 am and the event begins at 9:00 am. $20.00 registration prior to April 5th and $25.00 registration on or after April 5th. For more information please contact April Van Hamme @ aprilvanhamme@gmail,com

Holy Trinity Catholic is proud to announce that five of our seniors have joined the Knights of Columbus. Fr. Bruce and Marvin Menke had the honor of recognizing these young men before school Mass. We pray that Joshua Barr, Brant Holtkamp, Sterling Barnes, Kyle Bredemeyer, and Connor Holvoet (not pictured) stay true to the service and faith ideals of the Knights of Columbus.

Congratulations to St. Mary’s and St. Boniface Confirmation students who chose to be sealed with the Holy Spirit on Sunday, March 31st in Mt Pleasant. We are so grateful and prayerful for these students as they move forward in their faith and God's love. Pictured for St. Mary’s: Front row: Emily Boeding, Grant Anderson, Taylor Nelson, Emmett Kruse.
