A very big Thank You to everyone who helped with the funeral of our beloved Sherry (Derksen) Nicklaus recently. The choir music was beautiful and moving and the lunch was delicious, as well as providing a great opportunity to visit with relatives and friends. Thank you for welcoming Sherry home one last time. The Family of Sherry (Derksen) Nicklaus This school year the religious education students from St. Mary's took up a collection at their monthly Mass to donate to a cause of their choice. Of the $121.35 raised $60.00 went to "Water With Blessings" to provide clean water to a needy family and $61.35 went to "Heifer International" to purchase 3 flocks of either chickens, ducks, or geese. We welcome into the Catholic faith Owen and Mia Kruse children of Brad and Samantha who were baptized on Saturday, May 20th at St. Mary's. Lord, bless these children who were brought to you, and teach those precious little feet to follow in your way. Lord, bless their parents too. And with your loving care, reward them with all the happiness a family can share.

Thank you to the family and friends of Pat Winnike for the memorial of $2,231.00, Ruby Seager for $765.000 and Evelyn Tucker for $983.00 to St. Mary’s Parish and Calvary Cemetery. May God give them eternal peace and fill the surviving families and friends with the strength of His consolation. Attention: Knitters and crocheters: St. Boniface, St. James, St. Johns and St. Mary's would like to begin a prayer shawl and prayer lap robe ministry. If you would be interested in taking part in this ministry, please call Dixie at 837-8905 or 371-5043.

Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ,

A persistent drought has left nearly 23 million people across the Horn of Africa without enough to eat. Almost 5 million in South Sudan are now going hungry. In Somalia, a newly elected government has declared the drought a national emergency. In Kenya, 2.9 million face severe hunger, while 5.6 million in Ethiopia will be dependent on food aid until the next harvest.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international Catholic humanitarian relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is present in these countries, and is helping right now. In partnership with the U.N. World Food Program, CRS is airdropping food supplies into areas that are difficult to reach because of insecurity or a lack of infrastructure. CRS is also providing food aid to those displaced by violence or climate change. Depending on the situation, CRS may also be providing water, health services, seeds, tools and fishing nets to help in their recovery.

In 2015, Pope Francis said, “It is Jesus himself who invites us to make room in our hearts for the urgency to ‘feed the hungry.’” Please join me in praying for our brothers and sisters who are merely trying to survive famine. Please go to http://www.crs.org/stories/famine-threatens-east-africa to learn more about the crisis and the relief efforts being undertaken. And finally, please considering giving to the special collection to benefit the areas affected by the East African famine on the weekend of June 3-4. Checks are to be made payable to the local parishes with “CRS East Africa Famine Relief” on the memo line.

Thank you for your consideration of this request and please continue to pray for those who are being directly affected by the famine. Sincerely in Christ,

Most Rev. Martin Amos

Stewardship opportunities: St. Mary’s is in need of two new members for Parish Council and one High School Member. Parish Council meets monthly and participate in other parish events periodically throughout the year. It is a three year term. We also need a HTC School Board representative. The school board meets monthly for a public session and generally once a month for a work session. This representative would also be required to make updates to the Parish Council in a monthly written report and at least quarterly in person at the council meetings. If you have questions about any of these positions please call the parish office or Father Hoffman.

On Saturday, May 20th, the West Point Knights of Columbus sponsored a Euchre Tournament at the American Legion. It was a great evening of fun and fellowship. The money raised will help offset the cost of our high school student attend a mission trip to the Omaha/Winnebago Indian Reservation this summer.

On Friday, May 19th the 7th grade students from Holy Trinity took a trip to Wilson Lake for a half day retreat. The theme for the day compared our faith and fire. To start a fire, we have to start with small pieces of wood before adding larger pieces of wood. The same follows with our faith. We need to help our youth in growing their personal faith by meeting them where they are then moving forward. Retreats allow students to have an out of the classroom faith experience with their peers. Plans for next year include a retreat for each grade during the year.
