Ezekiel is a complex book that covers the Babylonian Exile and the destruc on of Jerusalem. God appoints Ezekiel as a sentry of souls by direc ng him to warn people in His Name to repent and reform. Early in the book, Chapter 3, he calls for the righteous and the rebellious to reform. In today’s reading, Chapter 33, only the rebellious are addressed because the people’s response is insufficient and the invasion by the Assyrians is now immanent and now Jerusalem is about to fall. It is s ll a warning of love to save them from both physical and most importantly spiritual death. Like Jeremiah, the prophet’s role is s ll difficult and not accepted by the people, yet he too is compelled to speak. Ezekiel’s moral duty has serious personal consequences if he does not warn the sinner because he will be liable for the sinner’s death. But if the wicked chooses not to repent a er being warned, only the wicked will die because it is his own responsibility and not Ezekiel’s. Jesus teaches us at Bap sm that we are all His prophets so we bear the same responsibili es as Ezekiel. If we are seriously hurt by an offender, we should have a private conversa on to give him the chance to freely redeem himself. A humble and honest discussion can dissipate any misunderstanding. If the offender also remains honest and humble he will change, crea ng harmony with no disagreeable consequences. If the offender will not cooperate, other witnesses might be able to persuade him to understand. Finally Jesus tells us to consult the Church. If he s ll does not change, Jesus says to treat him as a Gen le or a tax collector. Jesus was always trying, and succeeding, in conver ng Gen les and tax collectors. You may have heard of bishops speaking to pro-abor on legislators, privately, and some mes publically, telling them to refrain from receiving Holy Communion. You would get the impression that Jesus’ advise to those who defy the Church is a bit harsh. Jesus, however, was always harsh with arrogant, self-righteous and learned religious leaders. However, a careful analysis of the Gospels reveals that Jesus was always respec ul and open to Gen les and tax collectors. He never gave up on them because He loves the poor and sinners with great intensity, especially when they were not arrogant. They always came to Jesus to be er their life circumstances. While much of this was of a material need, Jesus always finessed it with a spiritual benefit, especially with the forgiveness of sins. Jesus always persuaded with parables that the common man could understand and with His life, especially while on the Cross. Jesus’ persuasions brought about a true sen ment of repentance and humility on those who understood and experienced Him. He is s ll ac ve in doing this today. We have a duty to correct others when they go astray. It is a very difficult duty to perform and the personal salva on of both offender and offended are at stake. But even beyond this, the salva on of others totally unrelated is also at stake. The scandal of the offender and offended may cause others to sin. We are all hurt by any one's sin – even the sins we don’t know about because all sin detracts from the common good. The highest act of charity is saving a soul from spiritual destruc on. It is more important than curing illness or relieving poverty, but many mes this too is connected to the spiritual welfare of the soul. Going about correc ng a person must be done in a fi ng manner. It must be done meekly, reverently, not in a pompous way and not harshly. If the offense is public, the correc on must sa sfy the people hurt as well as the sinner. If the sin is between just ourselves and the sinner, we need to try to save his good name. Why do we have so much difficulty in correc ng persons? Because we are sinners too. We are not worthy to correct others, especially when our sins are far worse. Jesus asks us why do we seek the speck in our brother’s eye when we have a plank in our own (Mt 7:3)? If we are known to be a sinner and reprove another for the same sin, we are hypocrites. Whoever wants to correct someone must also be disposed to be corrected himself. If we compare ourselves favorably with our neighbors whom we pass a harsh judgement, we are really poin ng out how good we think we are and commit the sin of pride. If we, as sinners, reprove a wrongdoer humbly, we commit no sin. We must be mindful of our obliga on to be prudent and good mannered. If we must reprove, and we are vic ms of the same vice, remember that we are weak human beings too, just as the sinner is. We can invite the sinner in solidarity to a mutual repentance and maybe help each other out of our vices through the mercy of God. The COVID-19 epidemic, the rio ng, the bad weather and the explosion in Lebanon are signs of a concerned God. May they help us personally to be er ourselves and those who are suffering. In this up coming elec on, may our discerning the candidates regarding the respect for the dignity of all human life be reflected in how we vote.
A Message from Father Euk

Here’s One Positive Encouragement
Written by a fellow parishioner
I want to WELCOME Father Sheldon Amasa to Our Lady of Hope Parish as our new pastor who is following in the footsteps of Father Euk. Father PJ, Father Doug, Father Cullen and the many pastors before. Each has le us with their different perspec ve as to how a father interacts with his children (parishioners) to help to raise them up in their soul’s journey to obtain heaven. Remember, a priest and a pastor are God’s disciples while here on earth. I do not know about you but there have been mes when having our pastor leave was difficult for me, yet, each me a new pastor arrived, I gained a further perspec ve on the same gospels that I have heard numerous mes before. This has helped to further my understanding of the gospel through the slightly different, new explana on. We have been very fortunate as both a new and older parish because the pastors we have had did not come from a cloistered life without life experiences. Our diocese gave us pastors with diverse backgrounds and experiences with a willingness to share their life and Catholic beliefs with us. Even though their lives and backgrounds were different, there was something that struck me…. their love for God, the Church and their parishioners was always the same. Some may say I did not have a warm, friendly feeling with one pastor or another. Ask yourself what did you do to get to know the man, the emissary of Christ on earth? Did you volunteer you me and talent for the church, community or for St Jerome’s School? Do you belong to any parish commi ees? Did you ever ask yourself what can I do for my pastor, the parish community, St Jerome’s School? Remember, its not what the church can do for you, but what you can do for your parish, pastor and church. By doing such, is showing God your love for Him Pastor Amasa may we gain from you a be er understanding of a love of Our Lady, our religion and our God. May you gain from us, the love, honor and respect of being the Father and Pastor of your new family. May we all work together to appreciate each other, and the gi s God has given to us, the main gi being the ability to love each other and experience the joy and harmony it brings.
