Parish News and More…..

Our Parish Prays For Life

A Holy Hour for Life will be held on January 21,2018 at 3:00 PM at St. Mary Parish in Georgetown as part of the Archdiocesan observance of the January 22nd “National Day of Prayer and Penance”. This Holy Hour is being held at parishes throughout the Archdiocese so that we will be praying in solidarity with the thousands of pilgrims going to Washington, D.C. for the March for Life. Led by Deacon Ray, we will pray together for those who have been wounded by abortion, for respect for the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, and that those who govern us may be guided by justice, truth, and a love for the gift of life. The Holy Hour is organized by Boston Deacons for Life in collaboration with the Pro Life Office of the Archdiocese of Boston. Please join us, all are welcome.

Saint Mary’s Women’s Club The Sweet February Chocolate Sale!

February 10th & 11th

Saint Mary’s Women’s Club has Saint Valentine's day all wrapped up! The members have put together Lindt Chocolate Gift Bags and will sell them after all the Masses on February 10 and 11 . A real convenient way to show your love! The selling price of these lovely treats is $5.00. The fundraiser will assist the Women’s Club in achieving their many goals such as donations to the Religious Education Program, the People Helping People Program, and Lenten services - to name just a few. Help us help others! Thank you for your support!

Sanctity of Human Life

The single, red rose near our altar this week memorializes the more than 60 million pre-born babies destroyed by abortion since Jan. 22,

1973. Forty-five years ago two Supreme Court decisions legalized abortion on demand for all 9 months of a mother's pregnancy for any reason or no reason. Each year in the U.S. we abort approximately a million babies. That's nearly 3 every minute. May the rose near our altar remind us to pause and pray that we soon become a nation proclaiming that each human life, born and pre-born, is a special creation of God deserving the protection already written in our constitution and in the law of God.

26th Annual World Day of the Sick

On Sunday, February 11th, the Twenty Sixth World Day of the Sick will be celebrated throughout the Church. Saint Mary’s Parish will mark this celebration by offering the Sacramental Anointing of the Sick at all

weekend Masses beginning at the 4:30 p.m. on Saturday through the 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. At the conclusion of Mass, those wishing to receive the Sacrament are asked to come forward and sit in the front rows of the church. It has been over fifty years since the Church referred to this anointing of the sick as the Last Rites. The Second Vatican Council urged that the Sacrament be renewed to include prayers for healing as well as for the remission of sin.

Today the Sacrament of the Sick is given to those who are seriously ill, dealing with chronic illness, facing surgery, elderly, or in danger of death. The Sacrament is a gift of the Holy Spirit one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that goes with illness and frailties of old age. The Sacrament gives us strength and gift of uniting oneself more closely to Christ’s Passion. The Sacrament prepares us for the final journey; it completes our conformity to the death and resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it.

Mass Policy during the Winter Season

♦ The cardinal rule: Common sense should prevail. If you think the roads and conditions are too

dangerous to drive, please don’t drive. ♦ If the Massachusetts State Police are urging

drivers to stay off the roads, do not venture out. ♦ On weekdays, if Georgetown/Rowley schools are

cancelled due to snow or ice, then Daily Mass is cancelled regardless of where it is being held.

♦ Mass in celebration of Sunday (Saturday 4:30 p.m. through Sunday 11:00 a.m.) will most likely NOT be canceled except in the event of a major storm where there are warnings about driving and/or people are told to stay off the roads.

♦ In the event that a Sunday Mass is canceled, notice will be provided to area Television stations indicating such.

♦ In all cases, we ask that you exercise caution while driving and walking on church property as the conditions may be less than ideal during or in the immediate aftermath of a winter storm. If questions arise, revert to The Cardinal Rule .

Pastoral Meanderings

Years ago when I was growing up I recall standing over my mother’s shoulder one day as she figured out the family expenses for a particular week. In addition to allocating money for food, guitar lessons, gas for the cars, clothing, and utilities, she always put money aside for the church. The church envelopes were on the table right next to the bills. Even if we were going on vacation and would be away for a week or two, the church would be taken care of. Supporting the church was as fundamental as paying the electric bill.

Studies show that people tend to carry less currency around with them and are more inclined to rely on their ATM and debit and credit cards for their purchases and expenses. If you are one of these people who carry just a few dollars in your wallet or purse, then perhaps you would consider giving electronically to the church.

Parishpay is a program that Saint Mary’s subscribes to. I use it myself as I always support the parish to which I am assigned. Go to www.parishpay.com and search with zip code 01833 to find us. Your offering will be electronically sent to Saint Mary’s. If you are concerned about putting something in the collection basket each week, even though you give electronically, you can put an index card in that is printed with “I gave electronically.”

Weekly Envelopes is another way to contribute. You can contact the rectory at [email protected] , drop a note in the collection basket or call the rectory office at (978) 352-2024. Individual Giving Envelopes will soon be available at the entrances to each church.

If you do not support Saint Mary’s on a consistent basis, please prayerfully consider doing so.

Blessings,

Father DanFather DanFather DanFather Dan
