Celebrating 166 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea
Mission Statement
St. Mary is a faith community which worships together, follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives,
evangelizes others by our lives and actions, gives generously of our time and resources in service to others, shows
compassion and love towards one another, provides religious education and works for social justice for all.
Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 26, 2018
Today we CONCLUDE the Bread of Life Discourse in John’s
Gospel with Jesus’ words: “The words I have spoken to you are spirit
and life!” But many gathered on that mountain chose not to believe
and walked away. And many believed in him and stayed close.
We have heard and listened and learned over these many weeks
that Jesus “took what we have (who we are) and uses it wisely and
wonderfully for all.” What gifts and talents we have, first, are from
God, and second, are to be used wisely and wonderfully for others.
That’s a pretty clear message, as is the message that the Lord Jesus loves
us so much that He wants to be into me and Deacon Tom used the play
on words last week of intimacy – the Lord wants to in to me see
(intimacy) and so he offers us his very self to be consumed by us so that
we are consumed in Him. It’s the TOTAL PACKAGE – when we receive
His Body and Blood, we receive HIM and BECOME HIM. And for this
WE ARE ever GRATEFUL and THANKFUL.
Live like Him this week!
WELCOME BACK STUDENTS
BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS As our children begin (or have begun) the new School year,
we offer you a prayerful hope that each and every one truly grow in
faith and learning. Let God be your guide and strength and be open
to all the NEW that will come your way. The students of St. Mary
School will have their backpacks blessed at the Back to School
event TODAY and ask that all families with students – no matter what age or grade or School – pray this prayer as they begin the
year.
All begin with the Sign of the Cross. Parents - lead the Prayer:
Lord God, bless our children and all educators and leaders of learning and faith. May the name
of Jesus be ever present on their lips and in their hearts and minds as they grow in faith, hope and love.
Lord God, bless their backpack(s) and my son/daughter who will use it. Be with them as they
learn and grow this year. Show them how to serve you and help them to teach us all about your love. All
this we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Pray the Our Father together and then together make the Sign of the Cross.
Did you get it, your 2018-2019 Program Booklet? If
you haven’t received it yet, call the Office and don’t forget to check the
pamphlet racks in the Mother Teresa Vestibule. Great Living in Berea!
Great THANKS for your constant generosity in your weekly Offering! Grateful Living!

Mother Teresa
“I do nothing”
Christ acts in me; He acts through me; He
inspires me, directs me as His instrument.
I do nothing… He does it all.
Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily
Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)
Family Perspective
Today’s second reading from Ephesians makes today
“nudge Sunday.” Husbands nudge their wives when
they hear “wives should be subordinate to their hus-
bands.” Wives return the nudge at the words
“husbands love your wives as Christ loves the
Church.” The key to this reading is the first line: “be
subordinate to one another out of reverence for
Christ.” When love is mutual and generously shared
between husband and wife—marriage goes to a whole
new wonderful level!
In Your Charity
In your charity, please remember the
repose of the souls of Mary Ann
Hennessy and Mary Fiorilli.
May they rest in eternal peace.
Bible Study, Faith Sharing Bible Study will meet in the chapel from 11:00am -
12:00pm on Tuesday. It is the faithfulness of the Kings
that is inconsistent and eventually leads to the fall of
the kingdom. Come join us to meet God as a God of
second chances, a message we need today. No experi-
ence necessary. Bring your Bible and an open heart.
Quiet Prayer
This Tuesday Quiet Prayer will begin at 12:30pm and
be followed with reflection on Everything Belongs by
Richard Rohr. Come and meet with us to explore a
type of prayer that allows us to listen to what God
may be asking of each of us.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy
LEARNING THE ROOTS
This weekend is the Music Ministry Picnic at Carol Carrig’s
house! It will be from 1.pm to 3.pm, and if you need an address,
please get in contact with me! Otherwise, just make sure that
you are signed up on the sheet on the bulletin board outside of
the loft, and get ready for a good time! This is a casual affair,
and I heard that there might be some fun activities prepared as
well! Again, if you are thinking about joining the music ministry
at St. Mary, this and the first rehearsal are a perfect time to meet
everyone and get a feel for the group! I don’t think that you will
be disappointed.
Here’s a quick music theory lesson for everyone! The form or
structure of a song can be described by its musical patterns. In
one example, think of the song “Twinkle, twinkle, little star.”
The first two lines of the song are sung to the tune we all know.
The next two lines (up above the world so high..) are different
than the first two, and then the last two have the same text and
tune as the beginning. In the music world, we attribute letters to
these different sections of the music. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little
Star would be described as ABA form, also known in fancy
terms as ternary form. I explain this because this week, I will
only be teaching the beginning and the end of the Community
Mass Gloria! This is because they both use the same general
melody, and it will be easy to pick up! Next week, we will learn
the middle section, which sounds completely different!
Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir
are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing
up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time
to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially
for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of
these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass,
please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the
music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext
27.

In The Friendship Project, Faehnle and Jaminet explore the cardinal and theological vir-tues with an eye toward friendship. Focusing on faith, hope, love, prudence, gratitude, loyalty, generosity, and prayerfulness, they help us answer questions such as, “What does it mean to be women of hope, and how does that change our lives and make us more compassionate friends during difficult times?” and “How does prayerfulness teach us how to listen to and talk with both God and our friends, which helps us reach out to those we love?”
