Christmas Blessings!

Each year we ask for donations

for the flowers & festivities of Christmas.

You are always very generous!

We suggest a $25 donation but

welcome and appreciate any contribution.

Your intentions will be included as a special

remembrance during the Christmas Season.

May you have a blessed

Advent and Christmas.

Please tear off and attach your donation. You may drop it in the collection basket or

mail it to St. Mary Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, MA 02451.

GIVING TREE ALTERNATIVES 2020

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Parish are not able to

distribute gifts this year. The whole process has so many steps

that it makes it almost impossible to do it safely. We also keep

getting requests for food and assistance with rent and oil. It’s im-

portant to focus on the most essential stuff this year. There are

many organizations that can benefit from your help this year. We

are suggesting three possibilities that might appeal to you – one in

the parish, one for the local area and one international. May you

be rewarded for helping God’s little ones.

1. SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY– You can donate to

the SVDP by cash or check or food and gift cards. They can be

mailed to the rectory or dropped into the offertory baskets. They

must be marked SVDP to get to them. Please make checks paya-

ble to Saint Vincent de Paul – not St. Mary.

2. CHRISTMAS PRISON PROJECT – A monetary donation

will allow Bethany House Ministries to provide a gift to prisoners

at Massachusetts Correctional Facilities. They can only take mon-

ey (rather than gifts or gift cards) because they have to buy the

gifts of toiletries so that every prisoner receives the same thing.

Visit www.bethanyhouseministries.org/ for more information and

to donate directly OR send us your donation and we will send one

combined donation. Make checks payable to St. Mary earmarked

CHRISTMAS PRISON PROJECT.

3. MISSIONARY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION – This Soci-

ety is under the umbrella of the Propagation of the Faith. It pro-

vides spiritual care and material assistance for children and or-

phans in Mission countries. Visit propfaithboston.org for more

information and to donate directly. Click “Donate Now” and se-

lect Missionary Childhood Association. OR send us your donation

and we will send one combined donation. Make checks payable to

St. Mary earmarked HOLY CHILDHOOD.

CHURCH DOORS DURING WINTER

The front doors of the Church are open for visits from 7:00am-

7:00pm. On windy days, the front doors may be locked outside of

Mass times. This is to prevent the doors from being damaged or

staying open all day when it is windy. You will know when the

front center doors are locked because the bungee cords are block-

ing the entrance. When the bungee cords are in place, please enter

the Church through the side doors. DURING MASS TIMES: At

Mass times, the front center doors will be unlocked and accessi-

ble. On calm days and during the summer and mild months, we

use the safety bar to unlock the church. This makes the doors easy

to open. On windy days we use the latch so the doors will stay

closed. You need to press down on the handle before you pull the

door. It is awkward and difficult because the doors are still new.

We are hoping to replace with handles with better hardware but it

is not easy. Pulling the door handles without pushing down the

latch will damage the doors. And won’t get you in the church any

faster. Thanks for your cooperation.

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

This week we will honor our patroness and Blessed Mother with

the Feasts of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guada-

lupe. The obligation to go to Mass continues to be suspended for

all Sundays and Holy Days but they are still feasts; so we will

offer Holy Mass for those who are able to come to Mass. Attend-

ance at the Masses on this day is usually high so we have set up

the lower hall of the Church for overflow Masses in case we

reach capacity. There will be a priest ready to begin the Mass if

necessary. We have also added Masses for the Immaculate Con-

ception. The full schedule is below.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception:

December 7 7:00pm Vigil Mass (Spanish)

December 8 8:00am Mass (English)

12:10pm Mass (English)

6:00pm Mass (English)

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe:

December 11 11:30pm Vigil Mass (Spanish)

These feasts will also help us prepare for welcoming people at the

Christmas Masses. Remember that during Advent you can listen

to Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer being said in your homes.

There is also a daily reflection. Just visit the parish website and

go to the Advent Daily Prayer & Reflection page. The prayers

take about 10 minutes. The reflection is usually around five

minutes. Blessed Second Week of Advent. – Fr. Michael

LAST FRASSATI EXCURSION

On November 21, twenty five of the confirmation class students

took advantage of the sunny day and made a trip to Harvard

Square. We walked around the Square and visited tourist sites

such as the Washington Longfellow House and Harvard Yard.

We held class on the steps of the Widener Library (see photo); the

topic was the Apostle St. Paul. They learned about his conversion,

his letters, ministry and what it means that the Church is Apostol-

ic. From there we went to St. Paul’s Church for the celebration of

Holy Mass. Then we ate lunch in a park on the Charles River and

walked back to Porter Square to catch the train back to Waltham.

Not being allowed to have regular Confirmation class has been a

blessing. We look forward to the next events in December.

1300) resides in the Chapel of St Nicholas in Assisi. From left to

right, these paintings depict the following:

1 - St. Nicholas throwing the gold bars to three poor girls

2 - St. Nicholas forgiving the consul

3 - St. Nicholas saving three innocents from decapitation

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A ST. MARY’S WEDDING?

We would like to host a group wedding for cou-

ples who wish to get married in the church. It is a

beautiful experience and saves on expenses. The

wedding would take place in February 2021.

Please contact the office or speak with one of the

priests if you are interested or have questions.

PLEASE PRAY FOR . . .

Gene & Marie O’Brien, Catherine Nanteza, Krissy, Steve, Fati-

ma, Mike, Gary, Kathleen, Brian, Gary, Ruth, Laura, Frank,

Charlie, all the sick and suffering.

END OF YEAR / TAX SEASON

Sometimes parishioners like to make charitable contributions at

this time of year. Please consider making a tax deductible contri-

bution to Saint Mary Parish or the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Thank you for your consideration.

HOW TO PUT OUR PARISH IN YOUR WILL

After providing for your loved ones, you may want to include the

Parish in your will to help assure the future of the Parish. Be-

quests are free of estate tax, and can reduce the amount of your

assets claimed by the government. You can simply include the

following in your will: “I give, devise and bequeath to Saint Mary

Parish in Waltham, MA <dollar amount> to be used to support

the ministry of the Parish”. A bequest can be a dollar amount,

property, a percentage of an estate, or part of the residue of an

estate. You can also name the Parish as a contingency beneficiary

in the event someone named in your will is no longer living. We

recommend that a lawyer help in drafting or amending a will.

OFFERTORY

Thank you for your generous offering to our parish.

The following was collected during all parish Masses.

A Prayer to Saint Nicholas of Myra

O good St. Nicholas,

you who are the joy of the children,

put in my heart the spirit of childhood,

which the gospel speaks, and teach me

to seed happiness around me.

You, whose feast prepares us for Christmas,

open my faith to the mystery of God made man.

You good bishop and shepherd,

help me to find my place in the Church

and inspire the Church to be faithful to the Gospel.

O good Saint Nicholas, patron of children,

sailors and the helpless,

watch over those who pray to Jesus,

your Lord and theirs,

as well as over those who

humble themselves before you.

Bring us all in reverence to the

Holy Child of Bethlehem,

when true joy and peace are found. Amen.

Gracias,P. Fernando J. Vivas
