Celebrating 167 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea
Presentation of the Lord February 2, 2020
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the
Presentation of the Lord. An Old English title
for the day is Candlemas, a name that continues
to be used in our own day, probably because it
evokes the connection with Christmas, forty
days prior. On Candelmas the Church blesses
candles and then marches in procession to ac-
claim Christ the Light of the world.
At Christmas, the Light came into the
world. At Epiphany it rose to shine in glory like
a star on high. At Candlemas the light is placed
in our arms. Like Old Simeon, we embrace
heaven’s eternal youth.
The Presentation of the Lord Feast
comes midway between the winter solstice and
the spring equinox. No wonder we
take a final look back at Christmas and a first look forward to Lent.
The Roman Missal offers today the option of a “solemn entrance” at Mass. A large array of
candles has been set up in the main aisle of the Church and the Priest and Ministers move toward the
table as the Opening Antiphon is chanted. Mass begins with a greeting and instruction as the candles
that will be used throughout the church year are blessed. Then the procession hymn begins and the
Sanctuary and altar are incensed as Mass continues in the usual fashion.
Large glass vases have been filled with votive candles are arranged on the front steps of the
Sanctuary for everyone to take and receive a candle after Mass as a reminder that we are encouraged
to celebrate with great devotion this Feast of Christ the Light of the world and to carry the Light of
Christ into the world! Happy Feast Day of the Lord!
In today’s Gospel, Simeon prays, “for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared
in the sight of all peoples; a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Not only
were Joseph and Mary amazed at his prayer, we too recognize Christ the Light and pray this day to BE his in our
world by our very words and deeds!
CONGRATULATIONS go out to our very own Diocesan

by filling a baby bottle with change, or an envelope
with bills, or a check. The Cleveland Pregnancy Cen-

an unplanned pregnancy. Some of the clients are
abortion minded; others need parenting support.
Please consider supporting this ministry by taking a

Coffee, Tea and Thee
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”
Matthew 18:20
Mission Statement
Coffee, Tea and Thee strives to connect followers of Christ to come together in fellowship to discuss various topics of our Catholic faith. By connecting with fellow parishioners, we are planting a seed to grow in fellowship and faith through conversation over a cup of coffee or tea. It is a time to connect with Christ through the joyful interactions with others after Mass on a weekly basis.
Coffee, Tea, and Thee offers timely book study, video presentation, and in depth conversation about our Catho-lic faith. This is a faith sharing community, meeting on Sunday afternoons throughout the year following the 11:30am Mass. All are welcome!

KIDS’ CORNER
If you have been to the 9.30am mass lately, you know that right
after the Introductory Rite, all of the young children are called
up to front of the church. Then one of the priests or the deacon
will give them a blessing and send them on their way to the
chapel. What exactly are they doing, and how is it different than
what goes on during the regular mass? Well, to put it simply,
the Children’s Liturgy of the Word is an age appropriate teach-
ing of the readings for each weekend! I know that when I was
that young, we had Sunday School, which is a similar enough
comparison. This isn’t to say that the children are just taken out
to color a picture; they are getting to experience and interact
with the same Word that we hear, just in less complicated lan-
guage. The readings come from the ‘Lectionary for Masses with
Children,’ which you may also hear from at the 4.pm mass on
Christmas Eve!
The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is so wonderful because it
helps engage our youngest faithful, who might otherwise less
attentive because of the complexity of the readings! Just speak-
ing from experience again, but when I was around the Pre-K
age, I can remember not paying attention at all to the readings
because I just couldn’t understand them! But when it got to the
consecration I could follow along just by watching the priest.
So once the kids get their lesson based on the readings, they can
come back and participate with everyone else for the rest of the
mass! So if you’ve got a younger child who has been nervous
about going, encourage them to try; it will be a fun time to talk
about God!
Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse
on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. If you are interested in partici-
pating in choir, cantoring, or playing an instrument during
mass, please call or see Mrs. Angela Kovic after mass up in the
