Mission Statement St. Mary’s Catholic Community

strives to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, “love one another.” Jesus is the heart of our community and Sunday Liturgy is the center of our worship. With Mary as our patroness and model, we open our hearts and community to all. As we journey in faith, we grow through our sacramental life, Christian education, and opportunities for spiritual enrichment. Our vision is expressed in a commitment to peace and justice, respect for all life, appreciation for the unique gifts of every person, and outreach to those in need. Our parish family affirms all members in their search for truth as they meet the challenge of being Catholics in this modern world.

Congratulations once again to our CYO Basketball team who captured the North Shore League 2016-17 Championship last Sunday, Way to go! Picture on the right shows our champs displaying their trophies.

It never gets old! The Archdiocesan Black Catholic Choir, joined by members of our Adult Choir, again demonstrated that music is another form of praying when they made their annual appearance at the 4pm Mass last Sunday. They have already been scheduled for next year.

Lent Begins…… After the Annual Mardi Gras Celebration, ashes were distributed by members of our Youth Ministry..

St. Joseph Novena March 10—18

Feast Day: March 19

O good father Joseph! I beg you, by all your sufferings, sorrows and joys, to obtain for me what I ask.

(Here name your petition.) Obtain for all those who have asked my prayers, everything that is useful to them in the plan of God. Be near to me in my last moments, that I may eternally sing the praises of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Amen.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

St. Mary Parish Family 1st Sunday of Lent March 5, 2017

When Winchester Schools are closed due to inclement weather, daily Mass is also cancelled. When there is bad weather, there is also concern for the safety of parishioners and our ability to clear the sidewalks to make them safe and free of snow/ice. When conditions are extreme and the Winchester school system cancels classes, we will cancel weekday Mass and Religious Educations classes. This is per recommendation of the Archdiocesan Office of Risk Management.

Hunger knows no season. The Knights of Columbus is asking for your support for this very important Food for Families program. During the Lenten season, we are asking each parishioner to contribute one can of food per day during the 40 days of Lent. Please bring your contribution to church and leave them at the back of the church. Members of Saint John Vianney will collect the cans after the 11:30am Sunday Mass.

Next week, Catholics across the Archdiocese will be invited to pledge their support to the 2017 Catholic Appeal. The Appeal helps to maintain and expand the many ministries that serve the Catholic faithful in our part of Christ’s vineyard. Please be sure to read the insert in today’s bulletin to see how these ministries impact our parish and the life of our Church.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Please join us, with your Child Abuse Prevention Team, on April 1st, at a Mass of Appreciation for all serving to keep our children safe. For 15 years the Archdiocese has been at the forefront of child abuse prevention and the Office of Child Advocacy would like thank those serving in this vital ministry. I have had the pleasure of visiting parishes throughout the Archdiocese and am encouraged by the dedication of Pastors, Protecting God’s Children Facilitators, CORI Coordinators, Religious Education Teachers, Faith Formation Coordinators and many other employees and volunteers who give their time to further the Church’s commitment to child protection. Sadly, child abuse is an epidemic in today’s society, but the Catholic Church is taking the lead in prevention education. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Mark O’Connell on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 6:00 PM at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 573 Washington Street Newton, MA A reception with light refreshments will follow.

Special “Easter Flower” envelopes are available at the back of the church for anyone to remember their loved ones on this Easter. This will allow us to plan more effectively for our Easter décor. Thank you for your generosity.

John of God 1495–1550 Feast Day-March 8 It is unclear whether he was taken from his Portuguese parents or left freely, but at just eight years old, John lived apart from his parents. He then led an irregular life in Spain and worked at various times as a shepherd, an estate manager, a book seller and a soldier. His conversion at age 40 took such extreme forms—including beating himself in public while confessing his sins—that he was temporarily confined for lunacy. While confined, he began to serve other patients. In 1538, he began hospital work caring for the impoverished sick, begging for the supplies needed. He devoted himself to sheltering and caring for the needy, including prostitutes and vagabonds. While he experienced persecution at first, this work eventually brought him respect and renown. He died on his 55th birthday, after which his companions who had joined him in service were organized into the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of St. John of God. John of God is the patron of booksellers, firefighters, hospitals, nurses, and the sick.

Bishop Robert Barron’s CATHOLICISDM series, an epic ten part documentary, took people around the world and deep into the Catholic faith. The series aired on PBS and has been seen by millions. But there is still more of the story to tell. Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church’s most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.

FIVE CENTURIES, TEN COMPOSERS JOIN US FOR AN EVENING OF PEACE on MARCH 11. TICKETS: BBCBOSTON.ORG AND AT THE DOOR. STUDENT SPECIAL: $15 (WITH ID) FEATURING JONATHAN MOTT. Jonathan, is a former Altar Server here at St. Mary’s and was an Adult Choir member until he went away to college.

Jonathan, currently Back Bay Chorale Conducting Fellow, curates and conducts a program exploring musical and poetic conceptions of the idea of peace – peace as an ideal and as a practice, how we impart peace to one another. This concert features music of Bach, Rachmaninoff, Stephen Paulus, Thomas Oboe Lee, Arvo Pärt and more in the remarkable acoustics and opulent beauty of St. Paul’s Church in Harvard Square.

Rebuild my Church! That’s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis and it’s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the foundations of true and lasting reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints.

We will study and discuss St. Francis on Tuesdays 2/28, 3/7 and 3/14.

Pray and philosophize with Thomas Aquinas on Tuesdays 3/14, 3/21 and 3/28.

Meet and greet Catherine of Sienna, counselor to popes and kings, on Tuesdays 3/28, 4/4 and 4/11.

On this first Sunday of Lent, Jesus enters the desert and invites us to do the same. During the next 40 days, let us clear our minds and recall who our God is and whose we are. Beginning today, let us and our catechumens, our elect, prepare our hearts and souls for the great initiatory celebration in the Easter Vigil, recalling that it is God who created us, saved us and made us whole through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord.
