ATTACKS ON GOD Nigeria: police foil suicide bombing attack on Catholic parish Police in Maiduguri, Nigeria, foiled a suicide bombing attack intended to kill worshippers at a November 18 morning Mass. The northeastern Nigerian city has been the center of activity of the jihadist terrorist organization Boko Haram. The city’s bishop resides near St. Hilary’s Church, the site of the intended attack. As police apprehended three suicide bombers at a checkpoint, one terrorist detonated her device, killing herself and another terrorist. “We heard a loud bang which shook our entire building,” said a priest at the parish. “I thought we were under a Boko Haram attack until I later found out it was suicide bombers that exploded at the checkpoint.”

SUPPORT FOR CAREGIVERS Are you or someone you know caring for an elder or an adult with a disability, chronic illness or mental health challenge, who is unable to live independently and in need of daily help or supervision with personal care? If this individual is also eligible for MassHealth/Medicaid, the Adult Family Care (AFC) program of the Greater Waltham Arc may be able to help. AFC is a MassHealth-funded program that recognizes the commitment caregivers make when caring for a friend or loved one. The program is free and provides support services and tax-free financial assistance to those who qualify. To learn if you or someone you know is eligible, call 781-899-1344 x 4710 or email [email protected]. Please note that spouses who are acting as caregivers are not eligible for the program a this time.

Fiat is a discernment group for single women considering a vocation to religious life in the Catholic Church. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 30 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine, 1105 Boylston St., Boston. The topic is Charisms in Religious Life. If you are interested in attending, please respond to Sister Marian Batho, CSJ, Delegate for Religious, [email protected] or call 617-746-5637.

HELP AND HOPE: A 12 STEP RECOVERY PROGRAM FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS Are you worried about another person’s drinking? Is someone you know struggling with drug addiction? Don’t know what to do or where to turn for help? Join us for HELP AND HOPE: A 12 Step Program of Recovery for family and friends of those who suffer from addiction. Learn how to live in the solution, not the problem! The meeting is held on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Religious Education Building (30 Pond Street, Waltham) – first floor in the meeting room at the end of the hallway on the left. All are welcome!

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER (WWME) Marriage Encounter Weekends are a special time for a married couple away from all distractions: work, kids, bills, and other pressures and concerns. When was the last time you had a weekend like that? It takes place at a local hotel or facility where presentations are given in the conference room and couples reside at the hotel/facility for the entire weekend. Instead of just listening to lectures about how to improve your marriage, you will actually learn a practical communication technique and have an opportunity to rediscover your hopes and dreams for your marriage. The next WWME Weekends are December 2-4, 2016 in Duxbury, MA and January 20-22, 2017 in Duxbury, MA. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit us at www.WWMEMA.org.

PROJECT RACHEL If you or someone you know is suffering from the pain of a past abortion, the Project Rachel ministry of the Archdiocese of Boston offers a one-day healing retreat for women at a confidential location on December 3 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. For more information and registration, call 508-651-3100 or visit projectrachelboston.com. Trust in the tender mercy of God!

THANKSGIVING THANKS Thank you to all who donated turkeys and food to families in need last week. Several parishioners and friends of the parish provided beautiful gift baskets. The St. Vincent de Paul Society gave food to many people in need and gift cards to Seniors in the parish. We are grateful for your kindness and prayers.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL There is an Advent spirit in the heart of every human person. It is one of longing, of yearning for a fulfillment that somehow lies beyond ourselves; for we long for the coming of the Lord.

As you put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, your heart will discover the true meaning of Christmas as you help those who are suffering and poor to long for the coming of the Lord.

Lord, as we await the fulfillment of your promise, give us a heart

that yearns for you. Lord, You came as a visible sign of love,

give us a heart that believes in you. Lord, strengthen us by your

grace, give us a heart that “stays awake and prepared.” Amen.

GIVING TREE Please pick up your ornaments from the Giving Tree this week. The ornament will include the name and age of a girl or a boy. Please be sure the ornament is securely fixed to your WRAPPED gift when you place it under the tree by December 18.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, I hope everyone had a a good Thanksgiving. More importantly, I pray that you have a peaceful Advent. Please know that there are Advent Companion Booklets at the doors of the Church. The booklets provide reflections on the readings for each day of the Advent Season. I encourage you all to make an Advent wreath and not feel a need to put the Christmas tree up too early. I pray that you spend as least as much (or more!) time in prayer as you spend at malls and in shopping traffic. I encourage you also to get your crèches and nativity scenes out or buy one for the Christmas Season. Remember that we will bless your Infant Jesus figures at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on the fourth and last Sunday of Advent. I pray that you can get ready for what Christmas is all about… the Coming of Christ. We remember that Christ came before in the little town of Bethlehem and that he said he will come again to judge the living and the dead. – Fr. Michael ADVENT STARTS NEXT WEEK The Season of Advent begins this weekend. It coincides with the darkest time of the year. Advent is the four weeks of preparation for the great feast of Christmas. Every feast needs preparation. Christmas needs spiritual preparation. Although it is not Lent, Advent is a preparatory and penitential season which means extra prayer, fasting and almsgiving are recommended. Of course, this is a bit hard when the world is celebrating all the office parties and overconsuming on stuff. I encourage you not to feel pressured into doing all holiday stuff. At the same time, I encourage you to do all you can spiritually to be at peace this Christmas. There will be a few liturgical changes staring the First Sunday of Advent. We will not sing the Gloria until Christmas with the exception of December 8th. The readings will be from the YEAR A cycle which focuses on the Gospel of Saint Matthew. The Kyrie will be different for Advent and we will sing a different Memorial Acclamation. If you are able, I highly recommend reading or re-reading Saint Matthew’s Gospel during Advent. You can never read the Word of God too many times.

MAGNIFICAT ADVENT COMPANIONS This week, copies of the Magnificat Advent Companion will be available at the doors of the Church. These small booklets provide reflections on the Gospel passage for each day of Advent. Please take them for you and for friends. We ask for $2.00 to cover purchase costs.

END OF YEAR / TAX SEASON Sometimes parishioners like to make charitable contributions at this time of year. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to Saint Mary’s or to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you for your consideration. ATTENTION LECTORS

Please pick up your 2017 lector workbooks in the sacristy.

LECTOR & EUCHARISTIC MINISTER SCHEDULE

SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Each year, Cardinal O’Malley seeks to show his gratitude for the men and women who selflessly serve the Lord in all the parishes of the Church of Boston. He honors them with what is called the Cheverus Award named after the beloved and holy first Archbishop of Boston – Jean Marie Lefebre Cheverus. This year, His Eminence is recognizing the work of 113 of the faithful, including Carmel Moynihan of St. Charles Parish. Give thanks to God for honoring this holy woman. I know Carmel would not like me to say too much about her so I will only share with you the criterion for choosing people for this award. “The nominee should be a layperson who has served the parish over an extended period of time and has done so in a quiet, unassuming and even unrecognized fashion.” I think she makes the grade. Carmel will receive the award form Cardinal O’Malley at an Evening Prayer Service on Sunday, December 4th at 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony. Thank you Cardinal O’Malley and thank you Carmel. – Fr. Michael

SANDWICHES FOR THOSE IN NEED Thank you to all of our “sandwich makers” who help us each month. Your sandwich donations provide lunch for those in need. Please bring sandwiches to the Parish Center at St. Charles between 9:00-10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 28. Please do not leave food after 10:30 a.m., as there is no one to pick it up. Also, there will be no sandwich program during the month of December.
