Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 12, 2016

Dear Friends,

We celebrate the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time and in Luke’s Gospel there are two stories of wom-

en. First, the woman who anoints Jesus and the second is about the

women who traveled with Jesus, providing for them out of their re-

sources. What’s the message here? It’s all about hospitality and care.

The woman who anointed Jesus was “known” to be a sinner, yet she

presents herself to the Lord and cares lovingly for him. So we are to

learn from her example and lose the judgment about her that the Phari-

see recognizes. As for the women who journeyed with Jesus, they were

willing to support him in every way. So we are to learn to care and sup-

port one another AS we are able. Both stories are good summer

“reminders!”

+

The seasonal color of Ordinary Time is green, and it is also the theme

of the world around us. Gardens and lawns, trees and hedges surround

us in their verdant beauty, reminding us that God’s creation is both

spectacularly diverse and tenderly vulnerable. In this season, we are encouraged and invited to explore the “greening” of

our spiritual lives. Carve out time to pray about the gifts you have been given in Baptism and about which you have been

reminded in Pentecost. Where they strong? Where might they be spiritually strengthened?

The flowering of the earth likewise invites us to work as communities for the justice of God’s Kingdom, because

we do not all share fully in its fruits. Summer pantry shelves are often low yet the essentials remain the same for those

in need. Are we able to give something extra at this time?

Summer is also a time of visiting family and friends near and far. Rejoice in the friendships you have made and

keep as did Mary and Elizabeth (Feast of the Visitation) and celebrate well.

Though the vacation schedules often interfere with our regular routines, summer is an ideal time to plan new

ways of how we might participate more fully in the parish ministries and opportunities of the next year, possibilities to

share and teach the ways of Jesus. Think ahead and make a new plan for yourselves!

+

Have a great week and THANKS for your contribution and support of St. Mary’s!

Father John

Congratulations to Fr. John as he celebrates his anniversary of

Ordination to the Priesthood today, June 12th. The Staff and Parish ex-

tends best wishes to you and may you receive God’s

continued blessing on this happy occasion!

Happy Anniversary

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

CYCLE OF FORGIVENESS

This weekend’s readings are all about mercy– about God’s abundant forgiveness for us sinners who fail to live the

holy lives in which we are called. However, this is our human nature; with original sin and free will, we are going to

make mistakes time and time again. Sometimes they are very conscious mistakes, and we know better, but decide that

our sinful ways are easier, better, more convenient than doing the right thing. This isn’t to say that we as the human

race are bad! Instead, we have the opportunity to learn from each of these mistakes to mold ourselves into a better

person. And with sincere penitence, God is right there to forgive us every step of the way. He knows that we are not

going to be perfect, but that means that we must be ever yearning to be who God wants us to be.

Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are wel-

come to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our

ensembles! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during

mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for more information:

Family Perspectives

David, one of the great men of faith in the Bible was also a

great sinner. He was humble enough to repent and try

again. The righteous men in the Gospel were humbled by

the example of an imperfect woman who showed repent-

ance and great love to Jesus. Let all of us humbly turn our

hearts toward our Heavenly Father and give thanks that

we are saved by Christ and not by our own works. Let our

works be a thankful response to His love and mercy.

Welcome to the newly baptized member of our Parish

Cora Ann Drabik

Welcome - Newly Baptized

Bible Study Bible Study meets in the chapel on each Tuesday at

11:00am and again at 7:00pm. We will continue our

study of the Book of Joshua. Once again we will see

that faithfulness to God enables us to walk confident-

ly in the world. Bring your Bible and join us as we

discover how much of what we read in scripture can

help us to understand a little better just what God

wants for and from my life in the world today.

Quiet Prayer

Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel at 12:30pm and

will consist in 20 minutes of quiet prayer done in a

community of people at prayer. You are welcome to

join us for all or part of the time. Why not come to

see if this type of prayer might benefit you on your

spiritual journey?

We must be poor to serve and understand the poor

The poor show faith and patience

in suffering, . . . and we are privi-

leged to serve God in them. We can

console Christ in His distressing dis-

guise in them, Christ suffering in His

brethren. . . .

To serve well our poor, we must

understand them; to understand their

poverty, we must experience it.

Working for them, we come to iden-

tify ourselves with them. Our Sisters

must feel as they feel, feel their poverty before God,

know what it is to live without security, depending on

God for the morrow.
