Scripture Readings Matthew 5:38—48

Reflection Questions Adults What is the point of “turning the other cheek” in an argument, and why is it so hard to do so?

Children When have you or someone you know insisted on “having the last word” in an argument? What happened afterwards?

Lifelong Catechesis Simon’s Soup Kitchen operates in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. The kitchen serves meals Tuesday and Friday nights during the months of October through April to anyone in need of a meal and a friendly smile. Simon’s Soup Kitchen is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 8415. Since the start of Simon’s Soup Kitchen, over 45,000 meals have been served. Many of our clientele live in Seaside Heights and the surrounding area through-out the year and work in our community during the summer months, and sometimes they need a little extra support during the winter. Your gift can help to keep the kitchen going.

Daily Mass celebrated in the Christ Chapel up to and in-cluding the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, March 4th.

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We continue to be taught through the scriptures the practice of authenticity. That is, we, as Catholic Chris-tians, are to strive for transparency and to avoid all temptations of cunning or deceit. We are to seek to find the Lord in the everydayness of daily living. We are to recognize the sacramentality of relationships and our leadership role in family life, civic community and church. When we abrogate these responsibilities we are not living the paschal mystery as we ought. These are all part of what it means for us to become more Christ-like, better witnesses to our faith, stronger am-bassadors for Christ. Thank you for receiving the message of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton as we Kick Off the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please consider mak-ing your gift as soon as possible. Again, I thank our parish Trustee, John Carlucci, and all those who assist him in getting the material distributed for the ACA. Thank you for your generous support of these initia-tives to support the programs and ministries of our Catholic Church. Preparations are well underway for the Season of Lent. Listening to your comments and feedback, we have an expanded schedule for Ash Wednesday; Faith-Sharing groups are forming; The Lenten Penance & Reconciliation Service will see an-other group of young people celebrate this very impor-tant Sacrament of God’s Grace; The Easter Sunday Schedule of Masses will be celebrated in the Church. Thank you for responsibly sharing your insights and suggestions so that we might better serve our parish-ioners. There seems to be some concern about the administra-tion of our parish. Perhaps I can offer a few insights to clarify some of the rumor mill headlines? Since my arri-val, I have been commenting on the serious financial condition of our parish, the years of deferred mainte-nance, and staffing costs that have been spiraling out of control. These conversations were had with the Pas-toral Council, the Parish Finance Council, the Parish Staff and in varying ways with any group with whom I would meet. The financial report prepared for last fis-cal year ending 30 June 2013 showed a cash deficit

(+/-) $45,000.00. The budget for the current fiscal year ending 30 June 2014 shows a budget deficit of (+/-) $140,000.00. The Finance Council asked how I would suggest we overcome this and my response was and is: restructuring of personnel and growing revenue

resources. Prior to my arrival and since there have been many resignations and some retirements. These pro-vided an immediate help; however, we needed to quickly fill certain key positions in order to provide a smooth transition. Whenever this was warranted, we have sought the assistance from the appropriate offices at the Diocesan Chancery; interviews were conducted here on-site with representation from the parish com-munity, staff, stewardship core and a parish trustee. Should anyone think or speculate that decisions have been made behind closed doors…shame on you. We have attempted to be as transparent as possible (given limitations that are imposed by law) and insuring confi-dentiality for all parties involved. The Parish Finance Council and I agreed that we would need to re-organize staffing and priorities to once again attain solvency in the fiscal year ending 30 June 2015. Some of this would be the elimination of positions; some would be re-focusing job descriptions; some of this would be new part time positions to meet the needs that have been identified. I have been meeting for months with repre-sentation from the Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and Stewardship Core. While making these decisions has been difficult, the just treatment of our employees has been in the forefront. Working with the Diocesan Human Resources Department and in consultation with the appropriate labor consultants, we have offered severance and unemployment packages more than re-quired by guidelines. Additionally, we have drawn information from the previously commissioned Stew-ardship Report; The Appreciative Inquiry Process; and The Listening Sessions. When I came before the pa-rishioners this past January, I shared as succinctly as possible that we have a challenging time ahead of us. We have begun the restructuring process and there is more to come. We have invited parishioners to con-sider their regular stewardship offerings to our parish. Leadership is about gathering the facts; analyzing the present realities with a view toward the future; then consulting key personnel in order to make a decision upon which to act. I realize that I am new to our parish community; however, I ask that you trust me to facili-tate the process that we are following. I ask that you avoid being influenced by the inaccurate gossip and speculation that can be very damaging to our commu-nity and serves no real purpose. I am grateful to so many who have offered me words of encouragement for addressing these painful issues.

Let us commend all of our efforts to the intercession of Mary, Seat of Wisdom. Have a great week. Let us re-member one another in prayer. Peace. Father Jeff

Weekend Retreat for Women - March 7th—9th St. Joseph by-the-Sea, Mantoloking

We will consider the call of Jesus: Did it come to him when he was baptized in the Jordan by John? Or did it come to him when he was twelve in the Temple in Jerusalem? Our reflection on these calls of Jesus will shed light on our own calls perhaps beginning in our youth. We will consider Mary’s visit to Elizabeth – two pregnant women sharing their stories. If interested and available, call Gail Cargiulo at 732-431-2815. Sister Helen will facilitate the retreat.

Chrism Mass—Monday, April 14th St. Mary’s is running a bus trip to the Chrism Mass, a Holy Week tradition at which time the priests of the diocese join together at the Cathedral in an expression of unity with their bishop. Ad-ditionally, the bishop blesses two oils—the oil of catechu-mens and the oil of the infirm and he consecrates the holy chrism, all of which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the diocese for the year. This ancient tradition is a “must see” for parishioners: the gathering of the diocesan priests and the blessing of the huge and beautiful vats of oil are impressive moments within a beautiful Liturgy expressing our connection with the Universal Church. It is also particularly meaningful to Confirmation candidates who will witness the blessing of the chrism that will be used when they celebrate the sac-rament in the fall. The bus leaves St. Mary’s at 5:30PM Monday, April 14th. The cost is $5, water will be provided and each person should bring a brown-bag supper. The bus returns to our parking lot at approximately 10:00PM. Please respond by March 15th so that we can open the trip up to other parishes if necessary. Please call Cristie Ritz-King to make a reservation or email her at [email protected].

Community Building Team Members Needed In order to continue our wonderful tradition of provid-ing enjoyable and rewarding community events, we need to increase our volunteer base. Please consider joining the Community Building team as a new mem-ber. You do not have to participate in each and every event, but we cannot sponsor any events without you! Thanks so much for considering this and please call Michele at 732-780-2667 for more information.

Consecration or Blessing?

Within the ad for our Chrism Mass bus trip, it was men-tioned how holy chrism is consecrated while the other oils are blessed. What is the difference? In both blessing and consecration, the persons or things affected pass from a common state to a holier state. For example, blessed rosary beads become instruments of God’s love and protection in a more particular way. However, in con-secration, the Divine action is more efficacious because the person or thing is now permanently dedicated to the service of God. Therefore, a bishop, priest or deacon would be consecrated to God because of the perma-nency of their order, whereas any person may be blessed at any time for most any appropriate reason. In terms of things, a church, an immovable altar, a paten or a chalice would be consecrated because of their particu-lar liturgical purpose, whereas a person’s home or reli-gious jewelry receives a blessing. Holy chrism is conse-crated because of its distinct role in the consecration of persons and things. The bishop is the usual minister of consecration and the ordinary minister of a blessing is a priest. However, all baptized persons are encouraged to bless each other as every blessing praises God and, of course, we bless ourselves each time we make the sign of the cross!

Martha Mary’s Spring Trip Some of you may remember when the Martha Mary Guild went to Sight & Sounds in Lancaster, PA to see the beautiful Christmas story. It was amazing! On Wednes-day, April 2, the Guild is sponsoring another trip there to see the story of “Moses”. “Not only will you be com-pletely immersed in the spectacular, epic events of the story, but you will experience the humanity of Moses and the children of Israel as they struggle for faith, freedom and belonging.” The reasonable cost of $ 96.00, in-cludes everything - the ticket, bus and lunch at Eden Re-sort Inn, which has a four star rating. Where else can one get such a bargain!?! The bus will leave St. Mary’s at 9:15AM and return around 8:00PM. If this interests you, get your check (payable to the Martha Mary Guild) to Elia Gallello or Treasure Herman quickly because the bus only holds 32 people. For more information, call Elia at 732-308-0789 or Treasure at 732-946-8982.

Martha Mary Retreat Day March 12th in Madonna Hall

The three-pronged focus of Lent throughout our tradition has always been: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Retreat day on March 12th is one response to prayer. The purpose of the day is that each of us will be united with God and with one another and as we reflect on parts of the gospel of John, which was written for us, “the readers” of the text, that we might believe. St. Augustine says that we read the gospels over and over and at times they are newly received. That is our hope that we receive them in a new way. The Retreat day is a brief visit here at St. Mary’s but we can expect great visita-tions from God. I invite you to be with us on March 12th from 12:30 to 3:00PM. Thank you, Sister Helen
