Rosary Society News St. Mary's Rosary Society's annual fundraiser will be a tricky tray, taking place in Msgr. Walsh Hall on Friday, October 23rd.

The next meeting of the St. Mary’s Rosary Society will be held on Monday, Sept. 14th at 7:30 PM in the school hall. All Women of the Parish are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Holy Father's Prayer Intention

We pray that volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy. We also pray that setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.

Parish Center Summer Hours The Parish Center Offices now closed on Fridays until Friday, September 11th.

Help Needed As our attendance at Bingo is growing each week, we find ourselves in need of volunteers to help the evening run smoothly. We need workers for calling, for the back room and out on the floor. If you can assist us on Tuesday evenings, please call the Parish Center at 973-235-1100.

From the Pastor……: “Preserving A Proud Tradit ion!”

Dear Parishioners,

We are in the middle of a very successful year for our parish and I am personally proud and enthused to be a part of this parish. It is because of your hard work and dedication to this parish that so many great things are happening here at Saint Mary’s. I hope 2015 continues to bring you and our parish many of God’s blessings!

One project the parish completed in 2015 was a feasibility study for a capital campaign to address critical maintenance projects related to Monsignor Walsh Hall, the Parish Center and School Building. As you may recall, this past spring the bulletin provided information about the feasibility study and a brochure was sent home to you. Everyone had a chance to weigh-in on the study during our in-pew survey weekend just after Memorial Day. The parish is grateful for your feedback and candor. Your feedback has helped us tremendously in shaping our vision for a campaign and it is my pleasure to share with you some of the key results of the study.

Overall, the results of the feasibility study were extremely positive. The majority of parishioners responded that the following projects were important or essential: renovations to Monsignor Walsh Hall (81%); Phoenix Center Renovations (74%), parking lot improvements (74%); repairs to the parish walkways (70%); addressing air conditioning needs (67%); and upgrades to the Sanctuary lighting (58%). In addition to understanding the essential priorities for a capital campaign, this survey also gave us a clear sense of our financial capability for these projects. The entire feasibility study is available online at www.stmarysnutley.org.

The clear majority of parishioners who responded to the survey, (67%), indicated they were in full support of the financial goal of $900,000 with a challenge goal of $1.2 million for a capital campaign. To this end, after conducting all the necessary research, the Lay Leadership and Finance Councils have decided that a solid financial goal of $900,000, with a challenge goal of $1.2 million, for this capital campaign, will be a sufficient and attainable target for us to pursue. In response to the overwhelmingly positive feedback to the feasibility study, the Councils, with my full support, have decided that we begin this capital campaign immediately. We have received all the necessary approvals from the Archdiocese of Newark to undertake these efforts.

Therefore, our capital campaign has now begun. You will be receiving more information in the coming months about your essential participation in this collective goal. Please be patient while we reach all parishioners about the campaign in due time.

As I reflect on these priorities and financial goal, it seems fitting to ask that we all prepare or hearts and our minds to begin this campaign with prayerful anticipation for the good things the Lord will make happen here at St. Mary’s Church.

God bless us all! Father Rich

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them on the last day. - John 6:54

I’m confident that most people reading this will recognize Jesus’ words from today’s gospel. Today, the 6th chapter of John’s gospel is paired with 2 readings that speak about wisdom and foolishness. In the first reading, Proverbs tells of Wisdom who has built her house and spread a table. In the second reading Paul warns the church of Ephesus to live wisely.

These readings led me to the hymn “Holy Wisdom, Lamp of Learning” (#521.) I’ve placed the hymn at offertory time hoping that it would connect the prayer of the faithful to our preparation of the gifts of bread and wine, which will be transformed into the bread of which our Lord speaks.

The text to the hymn is written by Ruth Duck; a prominent and accomplished poet, hymn writer, pastor and professor. The following is an excerpt(s) from her bio:

Ruth Duck holds two masters degrees--one from Chicago Theological Seminary and one from the University of Notre Dame. Her doctorate in theology was earned at Boston University….

The issue of language that is fair and just is still a crucial concern for those who worship in the vernacular. Especially in the United States, people passionately are committed to developing a language whose style and tone is as reverent as it is relevant. One of the leaders in this movement is Ruth Duck, professor of worship at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Her powerful texts have emerged as the major part of the cutting edge of language that speaks of God in universal terms and in poetry that is as poignant as it is stoic.

The text is set to a musical tune called Beach Spring. (You may have noticed that to the right of each musical title there is either a composers name or a word or two. These words are the name of the hymn tune.)

The tune Beach Spring is used for three other songs in our hymnal, including: God of Day and God of Darkness (#632) and many others not in the hymnal. This is in the same way the tune for the ABC song and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star both use the French melody borrowed by Mozart for his famous “12 Variations.” If you’re checking me on this, please be sure not to hum too loudly.

Beach Spring is a tune written in a uniquely American style called the Sacred Harp. The Sacred Harp has its’ roots in New England but was developed in the south in the mid 1800’s. You may have heard it in the movie Cold Mountain or other films set in that time and place.

If you’d like to read another example of Ruth Duck’s writing turn to Healing River of the Spirit (#697) Be sure to take note of the hymn tune to which it is set.

Grateful to be in service with you,

Bruce

The Pantry Thanks You Thank you for your generous contributions of recently requested items to our Pantry. As usual, when I call, you respond. You are a caring and compassionate Parish Community!

Enjoy Your Summer!!! Summer has finally arrived!!! Hopefully, you and your family have plans to take time to enjoy God's gift of creation in some way and relax, refresh, and rejuvenate before school begins in September. No matter where you go or what you do, be sure to take

time to thank God for the love he shows us through the spectacular sunsets, the powerful ocean, the majestic sea of stars in the night sky, the cool breezes, and the laughter we share with friends and family.

My summer will include some trips to the shore (my favorite place!), spending time with friends, watching baseball and preparing for the new addition to our family. For those of you who haven't seen us at Mass, my wife, Megan, and I are expecting our first child in August. Mom to be and baby are both doing well and we are happy and very excited for Baby Armando's arrival. Please keep us all in your prayers.

The staff and I have been planning the up-coming year for Religious Education and are excited about some of the additions and changes that we are making. One new addition this year will be in grades 3-5 where we will be adding videos on the lives of the saints. Hopefully, our students will be inspired by the lives of these holy people and will find their own ways to serve God and his people.

Thank you to everyone who has registered for classes in the fall. So far we have 200 students registered, which is a little less than half way. If you have not yet registered for Religious Education classes, please do so before August 1. This will ensure that everyone is placed on the day and class that they have requested.

Confirmation and 1st Holy Communion Registration packets have been mailed out, please be sure that you have received them and return them as soon as possible.

All registration forms are available by coming into the Parish Center (M-Thursday 9 AM - 4 PM) or you can download them from the column on the right of this website.

Finally, we are in need of catechists for both Sunday and Tuesday classes in all grade levels. Due to classroom size and space; our goal is to keep class sizes smaller. This also allows for students to receive more attention from their catechist and makes the experience better for all involved. So if you are looking for a way to give of your time and talents, please contact me or speak to one of our priests after Mass.

Peace, Anthony
