Good Friday Cross Walk The Nutley Clergy Fellowship invites the community to join them for a Cross Walk on Good Friday, March 25 at 12 noon starting in front of Nutley High School. Prayers for peace, healing, safety, compassion, and justice will be offered in front of locations like Town Hall, Nutley Family Service Bureau, and Nutley Police and Fire Departments. Participants of all ages can join for all or part of the walk and are invited to bring a cross of any size to carry as a Christian witness. This is a very appropriate family faith activity on this holy day. Those with difficulty walking can meet the procession in the Town Hall area at 1:00. May this be a fitting remembrance of Jesus’ cross walk of sacrifice and love for all the world.

On a day of Fast, only one full meal and two smaller meals (the smaller meals may not exceed the main meal in quantity) are permitted. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. All other Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence 'substantially’ or as a whole is a serious obligation. The Paschal Precept (or Easter duty, the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) is to be completed before the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22nd.

Good Shepherd Academy celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Good Shepherd Academy starts off Catholic Schools Week 2016 with a flash…mob that is! Students from grades 2 through 8 broke out into unexpected song and dance at the opening school Mass at Holy Family Church. Marcelius Figueroa played “Ode to Joy” on the violin and Brianna Santos, soloist, filled the church with beautiful sound and joy. It was a great opening to the week long celebration of Catholic education. Monday brought the students together for our monthly Anti-Bullying Assembly. Prayers, pledges and student presentations made for an inspiring afternoon. Tuesday was a day to celebrate GSA PRIDE. The students participated in our traditional Blue & Gold Spirit Day. Competitive games were held and big fun was had by all. Wednesday was the day we welcomed our “Grandfriends” recognizing the importance of our heritage, our community, and relationships across generations. Our guests and the students enjoyed a continental breakfast, craft, tours of the building, and entertainment provided by the students. Thursday was an extraordinary day for our students. Our 7th and 8th grade boys and girls varsity teams played basketball against a team of special needs students from the Phoenix Center in Nutley. Our students showed compassion, empathy, support, good sportsmanship and complete joy at this event. That afternoon our academics were put to the test with our K-3 Spelling Bee and 4-8 Academic Bowl. Friday, TGIF…..Teacher/Principal Appreciation Day began with a wonderful breakfast for the faculty. The students assembled to recognize and give tribute to their teachers. Through the generosity of the HSA, the teachers also enjoyed a wonderful luncheon.

"God awaits us with open arms; we need only take a step toward him like the Prodigal Son. But if, weak as we are, we don’t have the strength to take that step, just the desire to take it is enough.”

The Name of God is Mercy - Pope Francis

The fourth Sunday of lent is known as “Laetare” Sunday because the opening prayer begins “Laetare Jerusalem.” (Rejoice Jerusalem) As on Gaudete Sunday (Gaudete also means rejoice) the church reminds us that we are halfway through the season and calls us to press forward.

This week the Cycle A readings will again be proclaimed at the 12 NOON liturgy. These readings are recommended for masses where the catechumens, those who are seeking full communion in the church attend. (To learn more about this go to http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/who-we-teach/rite-of-christian-initiation-of-adults/)

The prelude “Enter the Journey” (#651) will be sung at the 12 NOON liturgy on each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays in lent. It is an affirmation of our support of the catechumens and their journey to initiation in the sacraments of the church at the Easter vigil.

The gospel is the story of the man born blind. The irony of its ending contains an important lesson: The blind man regains his sight and believes while religious leaders refuse to believe and are left in the dark. Our offertory song, “Open My Eyes Lord” (#391) directly relates to this gospel. It was chosen as a prayer that our eyes, ears, hearts and minds be open to the presence of God.

The gospel for Cycle C is the story of the Prodigal Son. In addition to the quote at the beginning of this article, Pope Francis makes two interesting observations about this gospel. The first pertains to the son’s primary motivation, which is his physical hunger. The second is the response of the father who on catching sight of the son “was filled with compassion (and)…ran to the son, embraced him and kissed him. The Holy Father uses this and other parables to describe a God who is overjoyed when we accept His love and mercy.

If you come attend the 5:30 or 9 AM liturgy you will be in for a musical treat. Our cantor John Luland will be singing and playing “My Son Has Gone Away.” This song, written by Bob Dufford, SJ (the composer of Be Not Afraid) is a most beautiful and haunting rendition that describes the sadness of the father prior to the Son’s return. In the song, the father sings interchangeably to his son and “Jerusalem” which Jesus used as a metaphor for the people of God. For me this song extends beyond the relationship between a father and son to include all the broken and strained relationships in our lives.

At your musical service,

P.S.: Please take a purple sheet from the doors of the church to see song selections that are not in the hymnal. These articles are posted on the parish website on the Tuesday prior to mass. I invite you to consider using them as well as some of the other links in your preparation for liturgy. You can them by visiting the parish website at www.stmarysnutley.org and clicking on “Liturgical Notes.”

This Week’s Words of Mercy: "Forgiveness is the essence of the love which can understand mistakes and mend them. How miserable we would be if God did not forgive us! Within the family we learn how to forgive, because we are certain that we are understood and supported, whatever the mistakes we make." -Pope Francis
