St. Mary’s to Welcome Newly Ordained Priest Last weekend, I spoke at all our weekend Masses and announced that recently, Bishop Mitchell asked me if St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow would “prayerfully consider” welcoming one of the “soon-to-be” new priests of our Diocese. The newly ordained priest would be the Associate Pastor here at St. Mary’s ministering with myself, our Deacons, our Pastoral Minister and our parish staff. As I an-nounced last weekend, I asked the Bishop if I could pray about this request and get back to him. He agreed and I discussed this possibility with our parish staff and thought long and hard about it. Finally, I called the Bishop back and said “yes!” - - - - St. Mary’s would be a wonderful “first stop” for a newly ordained priest and we will welcome him when he arrives in early July. In agreeing to take a new priest, Fr. John McDonagh has likewise agreed to give up his room in our rectory where he resides part time. (Fr. John also resides “part time” in another rectory) As you may know, Fr. John is the Coordinator for Campus Ministry in our diocese and works at Springfield College and AIC. He has resided part-time here for the last 4 years and helps us on the weekend. He al-so celebrates Friday morning Mass each week so I can take a “day off.” Fr. John also has kindly taught in our Faith Formation Program and has been the Spiritual Director for our parish’s St. Joseph Society which is our very active men’s group. These responsibilities will be handed over to the newly ordained priest after he arrives. As we prepare to welcome our new priest, we need to sincerely thank Fr. John for his ministry and that will occur after all three Sunday Masses on Sunday, June 24th. A reception will follow each Mass in the Parish Center hosted by The St. Joseph Society and all are welcome. I think it’s a great testament to our very busy and active parish family to be asked to have a newly ordained priest. We will be his “first taste” of the priesthood and let’s pray his time among us will be filled with learning, joy, happiness and fulfillment. If you are free on Saturday, June 30th at 11 a.m., please consider attending the Diocesan Ordinations at St. Michael’s Cathedral. Our new priest will be ordained on that day and how lovely to have it witnessed by the St. Mary’s community. Theology 101: The Church as Bride–Part 13 Despite the fact that nuptial imagery occurs all through scripture and was recognized by many of the Fathers of the Church, we don't often think about it. However, when this is the paradigm in which we look at our faith, several things become obvious. Baptism: to most of us baptism represents a new beginning, the “washing away” of sins, the incorporation into the Body of Christ. However, in Jesus' time a bride prepared for her wedding with a ritual bath. And Saint Paul, in Ephesians, refers to this. “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the Church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” Here the bridegroom himself prepares his bride. Eucharist: we recognize the Eucharist as the Sac-ramental Presence of Christ, and understand it as a sacri-fice, a participation in the heavenly banquet to come. But Saint Augustine adds: “Every Celebration [of the Eu-charist] is a celebration of Marriage; the Church’s nup-tials are celebrated. The King’s Son is about to marry a wife, and the King’s Son [is] himself a King; and the guests frequenting the marriage are themselves the Bride...” And Saint John Paul II said “The “sincere gift” contained in the Sacrifice of the Cross gives definitive prominence to the spousal meaning of God’s love.…The Eucharist is the Sacrament of our Redemption. It is the Sacrament of the Bridegroom and of the Bride.” Note that if the Eucharist was just a symbol, it could not be a “sincere gift” in which Jesus gives himself to His Bride. Marriage: In our age some see marriage as mere-ly a contract, while others see it is something more. Ephesians 5 compares Christian marriage to the Spousal relationship between Christ and His Church. A careful reading of those words reveals that Paul is urging mar-ried couples to imitate that relationship, rather than say-ing that marriage is like it. When read this way, words like “Wives, be subject to your husbands” become clear. Jesus was “subject” to the Father but in no way inferior, and his subjection was out of love. Likewise, husbands are urged to “give themselves up” just as Jesus did. Consecrated Celibacy: Jesus says that in heaven there will be no marrying or being given in marriage – because there is the one marriage, between Christ and His Church. Jesus also praised those who were “eunuchs” for the sake of the Kingdom. It follows that some are given the grace to live in anticipation of this future state of all the saved. Priesthood: Priests, whether married or single, are supposed to be “other Christs” with respect to the people for whom they are responsible. In other words, the priest's relationship with his congregation should strive to resemble the spousal relationship previously described.

What do I do with my old American Flag? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Many people are unaware that an American flag is NOT to be casually discarded. American flags must always be treated with the upmost reverence and care, even at the end of their usage. Until Flag Day (June 14th), St. Mary’s Church is accepting OLD, used American flags which we will then give to our Boy Scout Troop (Troop 90). They will properly retire them. You will find a basket just inside the vestibule of the church (the main doors) with a sign attached. Please place your old American flags in it. Thank You.
St. Mary’s Cultural Fair:
The Academy enjoyed their first Annual Cultural Fair recently in conjunction with their Annual Art Show. It was a wonderful night filled with many different vari-eties of Art and celebrating all the cultures we have represented at SMA. In addition, to displaying the student’s unique pieces of Art, families brought in cul-tural treats to taste. This event was just another way our SMA family comes together to share in each oth-er’s differences while having fun!
Congrats to St. Mary’s Academy Graduates! We are incredibly proud of all the St. Mary’s Academy graduates this year. Their hard work has paid off and they are well equipped to begin a new chapter in their chosen high schools. Spelling Bee A Huge Success!! The 2nd Annual Spelling Bee was a huge success and a lot of fun. The pasta and sal-ad meal was prepared by our dedicated Knights of Columbus and the dinner was delicious.
