Where is the newborn king of the Jews?

God brings Jesus to all of us in different ways. On Christmas the shepherds were summoned by an angel of the Lord. Today, on the Feast of the Epiphany, God uses a star to lead three strangers to his Son. We need to read this story carefully, for while many artists have painted the Three Magi with the infant Jesus Matthew clearly

tells us that Jesus was a child, around the age of two, and that they came to the house of Joseph and Mary not a cave or stable.

It obviously took the Magi years before they finally found the new king. It was through a star appearing in the sky that the Magi became attentive to God’s call. “Creation itself points the way to God through the magi’s study of the stars and the new star that they had charted and followed.” Do we take time to look for Jesus in our own lives or are we like many people who hear of the Messiah but do not receive the news with joy and wonder?

The Magi followed the sign in the sky. Their curiosity and faith led them to the Messiah. How do we move when we see a sign from God? Do we go for it? Do we allow our faith to move us closer to the Messiah?

Like the Magi we need to expect opposition along the way. For the Magi it was King Herod. For us it could be family, friends, the world around us or our own fears and doubts. When we choose to follow Jesus we can expect opposition, but like the Magi we need to have faith and continue our journey.

There is a new show on TV this season called “God Friended Me”. It is about a young atheist who is friended by God to help others. While he has doubts and thinks it is a prank he continues to answer God’s call. What would you do if God texted you? How would you use this opportunity to bring Jesus to others? Impossible you say! Remember, nothing is impossible for God. Many men, women and children have gone before us who were attentive to the signs, accepted the call, and faced opposition, but through their faith and courage they brought the Good News to others. We too are being called to bring Jesus into the lives of others. Will you answer the call and follow the star?

Sunday, Jan 06, 2019 SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

We bow to a higher authority From the first moment of his papacy, Pope Francis impressed the world with his humility. The newly minted pope bowed his head and invited us, the church, to bless him. How rare it is for leaders on the world stage to approach their role with humility and reverence! The typical response to the bestowal of power is arising spirit of arrogance and aggression. We observe the contrast between the Magi who prostrate themselves before an infant, while King Herod snarls and plots violence with his yes-men. How do we wield the authority we hold in our hands? TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12 (20)

Monday, Jan 07, 2019 MEMORIAL OF RAYMOND OF PEÑAFORT, PRIEST

And for your penance . . . What if you went to Confession and for your penance the priest assigned you a book to write? This actually happened to Raymond of Peñafort (1175-1275), who felt that his life as a university teacher had been too soft and easy. When he asked his Dominican superiors to give him a harsh penance in retribution, they asked for a book to guide confessors. Later, in the “creative confessions” department, Raymond found himself the pope’s own confessor. He assigned the pope the penance of swiftly hearing and expediting all petitions of the poor! Be creative in repenting, and be sure to do it whenever needed (more often than we like to admit). TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 3:22—4:6; Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25 (212).

Tuesday, Jan 08, 2019 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

See God and love No one, scripture says, has seen God and lived. But of course scripture also tells of numerous encounters with God in which someone came away without being reduced to a pair of smoking sandals. Today it’s not impossible to see God either: in other people, who are made in the image and likeness of God and carry God’s spirit in them like a temple, to use Saint Paul’s metaphor; in the sacraments, which make God present in a special way, especially in the Eucharist; in prayer, where we give expression to our relationship to God. Perhaps the most powerful way to pick up on the presence of God, though, is through love—in particular the kind of self-giving love that God has for creation, that Jesus has for the world. Where there is that kind of love, there God is. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:7-10; Mark 6:34-44 (213)

W , J 09, 2019 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

W The disciples were terrified at the sight of Jesus walking on water. Indeed, God’s power as evidenced in Jesus’ miracles may seem terrifying, perhaps because the display of mastery over the forces of nature reminds us of our own limitations.

None of us would last a minute trying to walk on water—but is that because of our physical limitations or because of our faith limitations? In the gospel story, Peter actually does manage to take a few steps across the water toward Jesus, until he focuses on his own fears instead of Jesus’ invitation. Bad move for Peter—and for us. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:11-18; Mark 6:45-52 (214)

Thursday, Jan 10, 2019 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Keep your Christmas present You remember Christmas—“May your days be merry and bright” and all that? Often we think of “getting through the holidays” rather than savoring, like fine wine, the implications of “God with us.” What Christmas celebrates is nothing less than the most radical moment in human history: the leap from the divine to the human, piercing the veil, God taking root in skin and bone and changing our destiny forever. The lights may be packed away, the gifts exchanged, but that’s the small stuff. How have I been changed by these days? TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:19—5:4; Luke 4:14-22a (215).

Friday, Jan 11, 2019 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Count on God’s mercy Can any of us doubt that Jesus would choose the welfare of suffering people who come to him? Still, we often pray—and live —as if we doubt that God has our best intentions at heart. God’s mercy is so clear and tangible, at the crèche and at the cross! If we ever find ourselves wondering if God really cares about the likes of us, we might bow and contemplate Jesus in the straw or nailed to wood. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:5-13; Luke 5:12-16 (216).

Saturday, Jan 12, 2019 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY

Back to the future The month of January is named after Janus, the Roman god of portals and doorways, of endings and beginnings. He is traditionally pictured with two faces: one looking back to the past, the other forward to the future. Tomorrow we celebrate the Baptism of the Jesus, which marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of ordinary time. That means today is a good day to look back over the Christmas season now ending and ask ourselves: What were some of the highs and lows? What could I do differently next year? Then look forward into the future: What must I let go of to embrace more fully the present moment? How do I want to live? TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:14-21; John 3:22-30 (217).

Stewardship Bulle n Reflec on: January 6, 2019 — Epiphany of the Lord

IS 60: 1-6, PS 72:1-2,7-8, 10-13; EPH 3:2-3A, 5-6; MT 2:1-12

As we continue our celebration of the Christmas season, we observe today the great Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. The word “epiphany” means manifestation and throughout the Christmas readings we have seen that the newborn King is eager to reveal Himself to all those willing to accept His presence in their lives. From poor and humble shepherds to the international group of magi featured in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus makes it clear that He offers Himself as a gift to everyone.

We also see throughout the scriptures that God uses what is familiar to us to draw us to Himself. In the case of the magi – astrologers – He uses a star. Our Lord continues to speak to each one of us today. But we must be alert to “hear” and “see” Him in our daily lives.

How can we become better attuned to the ways God is speaking to us? We must strengthen our spiritual “senses” by spending time with the Lord in prayer every single day. In the same way that we set professional goals or exercise goals, we can set spiritual goals to ensure that we are taking the time to listen intentionally to God daily.

When we establish a regular, intentional time for prayer, we will find that the Lord continues to speak to us throughout the day. We will more easily recognize the “stars” He places before us to draw us into closer relationship with Him. We will begin to see that He is indeed present in our lives at every moment.

10 Week Grief Support Group:

FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS

This educational support group is returning to St. Edna to offer adults who are grieving the death of a loved one (spouse, parent, child, or friend). Participants will have the opportunity to gather with others and to heal from their loss. The group will be facilitated by parishioners Diane Mulroe and Carol Mulvaney.

The Finding Hope/Healing Hearts Group will use two books by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, a national expert in the field of loss. The Ten Essential Touchstones that will be addressed:

1. Open to the presence of your loss. 2. Dispel misconceptions about grief. 3. Embrace the uniqueness of your grief. 4. Explore what you might experience. 5. Recognize you are not crazy. 6. Understand the six needs of mourning. 7. Nurture yourself.

8. Reach out for help. 9. Seek reconciliation, not resolution. 10. Appreciate your transformation.

“Think of your grief as a wilderness—a vast, inhospitable forest. You must journey through this wilderness. To

find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing. Writing can be a very effective form of mourning, or expressing your grief outside yourself. And it is through mourning that you heal in grief. The Understanding Y our Grief Journal is a companion workbook and is designed to help mourners explore the many facets of their unique grief through journaling. Specific questions are offered and writing space is provided for the many questions raised.” -Dr. Wolfelt
