When Requesting High School Recommendations

We are most happy to fill out recommendation forms, on-line or written, to the High Schools for your children. It is very helpful if, along with these requests, parents would submit a list of activities, ministries, and/or func-tions your child is involved in here at St. Max. We might not be fully aware of all these facts about your child and they are helpful to list in our recommendation to the school. Please, also submit any information indicating grade, GPA, etc. that you wish to share. Please email Sarah Ruffing at [email protected] if you have any further questions or requests.

STATEMENT OF ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES REGARDING NEWS REPORTS

ABOUT CLERGY ABUSE DOCUMENTS No institution has learned more from mistakes made decades ago in dealing with priests who have abused young people than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We have apologized for the sad and shameful actions of some priests, as well as for our inadequate responses in assisting victims and in dealing with perpetrators. For more than a decade, however, few institutions have done as much as the Los Angeles Archdiocese to promptly report abuse allegations to civil authorities, to screen all those who supervise children, and to train adults and children in the latest abuse pre-vention procedures. The past cannot be changed, but we have learned from it. We are justifiably proud of our record of child protection in the 21st century, and we remain vigilant against all that would harm our children and young people.

RCIA Continues On Toward Easter The RCIA program, preparing those interested in the Catholic Faith, really jumps into the New Year! The month of January will offer Church History and a spe-cial session on the Blessed Mother. The last Monday in January will find our RCIA joining the Parish for the Mission. February brings a session on the Sacraments, a Retreat Day, a special session on the Eucharist, as a Meal and as a Sacrifice and then a Walk Through Mass at the end of the month. Also included in February is the Rite of Election of our Catechumens, those not yet baptized, in which we send them in response to the call from the Archdiocese to come to the Cathedral, hopefully after our Annual Pancake Breakfast for the Parish to join in their support. March, in the midst of Lent, will bring sessions on Rec-onciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage and Holy Orders. The RCIA will support the Soup before the Sta-tions of the Cross on March 1st and then on March 17th all of the RCIA Candidates, those who have already been baptized, are planning to receive the balance of their Initiation Sacraments, their First Communion and where appropriate their Confirmation. Then there is the Easter Vigil with the planned Baptism of five, possibly six of our parishioners, during that beautiful Liturgy.

The Archbishop’s letter also stated:

Now is the time for each of us to get back to what real-ly matters. The new evangelization must begin in your hearts and in mine. We all need a new conversion. On-ly the converted heart can lead other hearts to conver-sion.

In every age and every place, believers have the duty to proclaim the Gospel. The faith we have received, we are called to pass on to others. The love of God we know, we are called to share with others. This is the most basic identity and responsibility of every Catholic. In our times, our Catholic calling to holiness and mis-sion takes on new urgency. Our world will return to God but not by way of words and programs, no matter how eloquent or well con-ceived. Our world will return to God only by way of wit-nesses, by way of men and women who testify by the example of their lives that Jesus Christ is real and that his Gospel is the path to true happiness. Jesus is calling us to be those witnesses, my brothers and sisters.

TIME

The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it will be “a year ac-ceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listen-ers at that time. When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.” The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word. The Personnel Files of Accused Priests

The Archdiocese has complied with a retired fed-eral judge's 2011 order to edit the personnel files of priests accused of sexual abuse, prior to those files being released to the public. The judge's or-der was the result of a process that attorneys for abuse victims and the Archdiocese agreed would be accepted by all parties involved. It is important to note that the judge's order specified the edits in part due to what he said were demonstrable positive changes the Archdiocese had already im-plemented to its policies and procedures in report-ing abuse to authorities and in training personnel and children in abuse prevention techniques. Much of the information in the files is decades old and has already been the subject of in-depth cov-erage in the press and was disclosed by the Arch-diocese in the 2004 Report to the People of God. There is no priest in ministry who has been found to have abused a minor.
