Worldwide, over one million children are in refugee camps
today. With your help, we can make a difference.
Through the few simple steps of a new program created by
Catholic Relief Services, we will be able to bring the plight
of refugee children to the attention of people in position to
enact genuine change.
Join us for an orientation / training session on Tuesday,
December 3rd in St. Patrick Hall (the Auditorium) from 6:30
to 9:00 p.m.

ALL THIS WEEKEND!
Throughout November, St. Mel Parish, School, Preschool
and Religious Formation classes have been collecting
bags of nonperishable food to be donated to the Guada-
lupe Center in Canoga Park. And this weekend we’ve
parked a rental truck in front of the church. Our Knights of
Columbus, Society of St. Vincent dePaul and other volun-
teers are helping us fill that truck to the top! On Monday,
the 25th, we will drive the truck to Guadalupe Center
where the food will be distributed to the many families in
need who are served by the Center daily.
During this season, when we all have so much to be
thankful for, we pray that you will join us in this effort to
share our gifts and help spread God’s love and generosity
among our neighbors. There’s still time to bring your dona-
tion.

Please be generous in this week’s
special collection for the Catholic
Campaign for Human Develop-
ment. In the United States, one in
six people live in poverty. Through
this collection you support pro-
grams that address the causes of
poverty and provide a sustainable
future for people across the country
who struggle. In addition 25% of the
funds we collect will remain in our
diocese to fund local antipoverty
projects. Please prayerfully consid-
er how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More infor-
mation about CCHD can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.
As you leave Mass today, please pick up a Little

family explore scripture and deepen your rela-
tionship with Christ during the Advent and

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER
The Last Monday Evening of Each Month
Monday, November 25
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
St. Mel Convent Chapel
For most of us, our lives have become increasingly busy and
oftentimes, overwhelming. Striking a balance feels illu-
sive. Contemplative prayer, the oldest expression of prayer,
is a path towards the order, balance and harmony God in-
tended. All we need to do is show up empty handed and
open hearted. If this is a practice you would like to attend, we
would love you to join us for two 20 minute periods of silent
prayer in the intimate St. Mel Convent Chapel. At the end of
the hour, we will close with "Our Father" and you will re-
ceive reflection questions for your own personal "at home"
meditation.
For further information, please call Michelle Waters at
(310) 489-0253.

At every Mass we pray to God together, “thy Kingdom come, thy will be done.” And we
long for the peace and the security of that Kingdom of God. But once again the violence
and tragedy of our world has played out before our eyes. This time coming so close to home: a shooting at
Saugus High School has brought death and injury to innocent children while attending their school, a place
where everyone needs to be safe and secure. Their innocence has been betrayed. Once again we grieve, we
worry, we cry out to God, “How could you let this happen? Aren’t you in control of everything?”
With this burden on our hearts, we come to the end of
the liturgical year today and look for our King, Jesus the
King of Kings to bring us peace. We look for the all-
powerful one who is in control of everything. But the
Gospel of the day presents us with a different and dis-
turbing vision – Jesus is on his cross – just as we see
him in any Catholic church – the crucified one who is
the King of the Universe experiencing pain, rejection,
and betrayal.
People were jeering him, some taking his name in vain,
as so many do to this day. Pilate had ordered an in-
scription to be put on the cross declaring Jesus’ crime:
This is the King of the Jews. Everyone was making
sport of him as he suffered; it is a terrible and shameful
scene. Yet it was God’s way of redeeming us all from
death. He made peace by the blood of his cross.
God’s ways are not our ways.
In a wonderful moment of compassion, Jesus, on the
cross, taking on the burden and sin of the whole world,
and suffering untold pain, has the presence of mind and
tenderness of heart needed to turn to the “good thief” in his prayer for mercy.
You and I can utter that simple prayer, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he will
promise us paradise too. We simply turn to him with our own sin and burdens and find that he is indeed King
of the Universe. “Today you will be with me in Paradise,” he says to the thief. “Today your sins are forgiven,”
he says to us.
Jesus of Nazareth came into the world and ultimately became a victim of its violence and cruelty himself. He
died. He is risen. He will come again. We too have already died
in baptism, entered into the Kingdom of God and become citizens
of Heaven. We are now his forgiving and healing heart present in
the world. “He has no hands now but ours, no feet but ours,” as
Teresa of Avila would say. Today, we can bring the Kingdom of
mercy and peace to one another.

Simbang Gabi is the ancient and uniquely Filipino tradi-

lished with parades, music and entertainment.
The Filipino-American Community of St. Mel will be host-

Building your active listen-
ing skills with the children in
your life can help you com-
municate more effectively
with them, and it can also
clue you in to any suspi-
cious or potentially danger-
ous relationships in their lives. Active listening lets the
speaker know that you have heard, understood, and val-
ued what he or she said. Often, children don’t feel this
way, but with a few easy tactics, you can change that,
building a relationship of trust and respect. As an active
listener, be sure to make eye contact while the child is
speaking. Ask follow-up questions and check in to make
sure you both understand what’s being said. Avoid “yes or
no” questions and instead ask open-ended questions that
will keep the conversation going.
