FR. RON’S RAMBLINGS As we continue along during our Christmas season, I want to express my appreciation and that of the whole parish to all those who contributed to our beautiful Christmas celebrations: all of our choirs and cantors; all those who helped to decorate our churches, up and down; all the ministers and altar servers; and our custodians who work hard to keep our church clean, inside and out!
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of The Holy Family at a particularly appropriate time of year. Not only is it the time when the Holy Family was created, but it is also the time when most families gather together. As Christ was born into the first family life, we are reminded that God is present in all our families as well. Family life doesn’t have to be perfect or without conflict for God to be present. All the more when things are upsetting is God’s nearness desired and needed.
We tend to see the Holy Family as that perfect family but the reality is that family life for them was as real as it is for us.
As we move into this New Year may we celebrate the many ways that God chooses to make His dwelling place among us. And continue to give thanks for the birth of Christ in our midst.

May God bless them and their parents!

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH NURSE
BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN OUR FAMILLIES
Here are a few Parenting Strategies for raising successful
kids.
1. Create a warm, caring, supportive family. Tap into your own way of showing your kids you care.
Spend time together in ways that fit your lifestyle.
Try to make time for regular meals together, go for
walks, talk in the car and attend church together.
2. Maintain open, honest communication with your children. Lots of kids today text—many of them
with their parents. If it works for your family, go for
it. The way you talk together matters less than how
much you truly listen.
3. Connect your kids to other caring adults. Introduce your children to people you like and respect.
Support those positive relationships that develop
naturally.
4. Get involved with your children’s school and activities. Try to take advantage of opportunities to
attend your child’s activities and support his/her
church and school activities. If you are too busy to
attend, at the very least connect with your child’s
teachers via email or phone and/or have a
grandparent or other close relative take your place.
5. Empower your children to contribute. All people need to know they are valued and valuable, it’s
human nature. Show kids that they are valued at
home by giving them increasing levels of
responsibility. Take it a step further by helping
them get engaged in service in their community,
whether in the church, neighborhood, school, or
somewhere else.
6. Keep your child safe. If you are communicating with your child you’ll know what’s going on in their
lives, where they may need some help, or if they
might need someone to look out for them. If they
have contributing roles and positive influences in
they lives they’re more than likely to make safe
choices.
7. Set boundaries and expectations. Reward your child’s positive behavior and limit opportunities for
the negative. The key to reducing everyone’s stress
and frustration about limits and expectations is to be
clear, concise and reasonable.
8. Praise your child’s achievements. Children who receive genuine praise from their parents and the
adults around them have more self-confidence and a
higher self-esteem. They are better able to form
good habits based on the praise they receive.
THE HOLY FAMILY
Every parent knows the trials of raising
children. There is the wonder of watching someone
grow and learn and discover new things. There is
satisfaction as a child takes to heart the morals and
values that a parent seeks to share. There is sadness,
and even grief, when some difficult problem or illness
besets a son or daughter. There may even be anger or
despair if, as a child grows, he or she rejects what a
parent holds dear. Needless to say, family life is
complicated, never perfect, sometimes full of joy,
sometimes crowded with pain.
Today's Gospel gives a hint that the life of the
Holy Family was not always the perfect example we
might imagine. Trials and struggles were a part of their
life too. As the Gospel story relates today, Jesus
basically skipped out on Mary and Joseph, not an
unusual practice for an adolescent. But also not the kind
of thing we would typically associate with a well-
behaved teenager. In other words, the Holy Family is
exhibiting the traits and behaviors that are part of the
dynamic of ordinary family life.
And that is good! It serves as a reminder to all
of us that their example is that of a family not so
different from our own. On this feast the church lifts up
the Holy Family for us to imitate. The prayer for the
day asks God to help us be like them "in practicing the
virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity." No
matter the structure of our family household, we are
called to put into practice the eternal love of God, first
revealed in the mystery of the family of the Trinity, and
then lived out concretely in human life in the Holy
Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It is the bond of
charity that holds any family together, a love that
penetrates deep into our souls and abides in our hearts
no matter the joys or sorrows that life brings.

Sunday Throughout the
Week:
SHARING THE GOSPEL
Imagine Jesus goes to your church today. After
church, Mary and Joseph find him on the altar
telling stories from the Old Testament to the priests
and the Sunday School teachers. Mary and Joseph
would be amazed. They would want Jesus to come
home. Jesus would love his parents so much that he
would go home with them. He will stay with them
until he grows older, wiser, and stronger.
PRAYER
Lord, teach me your Bible stories so that I can
teach them to others.
SOMETHING TO DRAW
Draw yourself or Jesus talking to the teachers in
your church.
MISSION FOR THE WEEK
I will always let my parents know where I am, so
they won't worry.
