If you are unfamil-iar with it, please take a moment to page through this issue. You’ll find that The Catholic Post is a vital source of information and inspiration for Catholic liv-ing. It also is a key source of diocesan unity. We strongly encourage your readership and support.

A NEW READING SERIES NEEDED

St. Michael School is looking for dona-tions towards a new reading series that will be purchased for grades K-6th grade next year. Our current series is still good, but is outdated for today’s new interventions towards reading cur-

riculum. It is our goal to purchase a new series that our teachers and the planning committee will select through research and meetings. The donations will go directly to the purchasing of this series which is a major purchase out of the school budget. All schools in the state used to rely heavily on the IL Textbook Loan program that was eliminated from school fund-ing for all schools. Thus, anyone that is interested in helping our students become more confident and flu-ent readers will give a gift of a lifetime to our St. Mi-chael students. If interested, please contact the school office at 815-672-3847.

TEXTBOOK SOFTWARE

Pictured is Mrs. Joyce with her 8th grade Algebra stu-dents learning about ratios, proportions, and percents. They were using the Interactive Chalkboard software from the textbook series and the new television that was donated to St. Michael the Archangel School. With the help of “PC to TV” adapters, teachers throughout the school can use the large screen TV as a tool for internet-based activities that accompany our textbook series as well as other “off-line” activities.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

Paul’s first converts in Corinth were not from the respectable classes in that seaport city. As he reminds them, by human standards they were not wise, strong, or no-ble. But God chose them anyway because “my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord” (Is 55:8). Christians cannot boast before God be-cause it is Jesus who is our wisdom and power and righteousness.

But we have no opportunity for complacency. God challenges us to live according to his ways, which Jesus set forth in the Beatitudes. The qualities God looks for are con-trary to the goals of this world. Knowing that we cannot achieve this standard of living under our own power, we respond to God in gratitude for the grace given us by Jesus Christ by using the time, talent, and treasure entrusted to us in his service.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 30, 2011

1. First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community by Dr. Tim Gray (10 weeks)

In this DVD series Dr. Tim Gray provides comprehen-sive teaching and commentary on Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth were in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. With divisions, immorality, perse-cution, and other trials of the faithful, the message of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a much needed message for our own times. First Corinthians: The Church and Christian Community explores the key elements that the apostle Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the na-ture of grace and the Church as the Body of Christ. In addition, he introduced Corinthian Christians to the most powerful gift of all, the Eucharist.

♦ Learn the importance of Christian unity in relation to the Church as the Body of Christ. ♦ Explore St. Paul’s strategy for successful evan gelization. ♦ See how to live a Christian life in the midst of a pagan culture. ♦ Discover why St. Paul sees the Church as the Body of Christ.

This session will meet on Tuesday afternoons at the Immaculate Conception Center beginning Tuesday, February 8, 2011 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

2. James: Pearls for Wise Living by Jeff Cavin (10weeks)

James is one of the most practical books of the Bible. Like the book of Proverbs, it is a book of wisdom, a collection of teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. These teachings speak loudly to all those who feel torn between the compet-ing demands of this world and their faith. This study offers “pearls for wise living” by applying the wisdom of James to the present day. For anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances.

♦ Find an anchor to hold you steady through the storms of life. ♦ Learn how just a few small words can change your entire life for better or worse. ♦ See how God’s wisdom helps us face suffering and temptation. ♦ Learn the secret to finding joy in the midst of trials ♦ Find value in suffering. ♦ Find reason to trust God’s providence over wealth or position or personal talent. ♦ Learn to recognize the source of discord and the way to peace.

This session will meet on Tuesday evenings at the Immaculate Conception Center beginning on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
