Advent Reconciliation Monday

On Monday, December 18, 2017, we will be celebrating Advent Reconciliation Monday. On this special day, we will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, in preparation for the great Feast of the Lord’s Nativity.

Here at St. Nick’s we have confessions from Monday through Saturday: 11:45AM-12:00 Noon in the chapel, and on Saturday: 4:00PM – 4:45PM in the Church. And by appointment.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Today is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new liturgical year in

the life of the Church. The term Advent comes from two Latin words Ad-ventus,

which simply means “to arrive” or “to come.” For us Christians, it means expect-

ing the Lord’s coming. It is a four-week preparation period leading up to

Christmas. Our Advent liturgies and scriptural texts encourage our trust in God.

These keep our hope alive and help us prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus, the Prince of

Peace, into our hearts.

In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah opens the door to the season and sets the tone for us. He

speaks our needs and voices our dissatisfaction with ourselves. He acknowledges that we fail to

please God, "we are sinful." But there is great confidence implied in his forthright prayer "rend

the heavens and come down." (Is. 63:17) At the end of his prayer, Isaiah puts his faith and con-

fidence in God, saying, "Father, we are the clay and you the potter; we are all the work of

your hands"(Is. 64:7).

Today’s Gospel is taken from the end of Mark’s Gospel, where Jesus emphasizes the need for

watchfulness. The Son of Man will come without warning; only the Father knows the exact hour.

The disciples must not be caught unprepared when this time comes. This Gospel passage reminds

us that Advent is not only about preparing ourselves for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. More

than that, Advent is also about preparing ourselves for Christ’s return in glory at the end of time.

What shall we do during this Advent Season? It is a special time that reminds us that in spite of

our sinfulness and wrongdoing, God has not given up on us. We discover God has been embrac-

ing us with love all along. God has taken flesh and dwells among us! Jesus embodies God’s

faithful and merciful love. May we remain faithful to Jesus’ words in the Gospel today

(Mk 13:37) “what I say to you, I say to all: watch!”

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Today we begin our new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent. In addition to the Advent Wreath, this year we will also use the Jesse Tree as another aid in our preparation to celebrate Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem over 2017 years ago, His coming into our lives in a variety of ways each day, and preparing for His coming again at the end of time. The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: “A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.” It is way to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament and to connect the Advent Season with the fidelity of God across 4000 years of history.

The branch is a biblical sign of newness out of discouragement, which became a way to talk about the expected Messiah as found in Jeremiah 23:5, “See, days are coming-oracle of the Lord—when I will raise up a righteous branch for David; as King he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land.” The story of God in the Old Testament can be told either in terms of the main characters of the story, or of pivotal events that helped shape and define the people’s journey of Faith through the Old Testament.

We will be using several images of persons or events and very briefly include their significance in the unfolding witness to God’s self-revelation in history. We will see connections to New Testament events because it all leads to the Incarnation of Jesus: God taking on our humanity. However, the Old Testa-ment story should not be seen only as preparation for the New Testament. We also come to deepen our realization of the continuity of God’s love, patience, and grace across the centuries to the most unlikely people in the midst of their failures as the people waited for the coming of the Promised Messiah. The Old Testament stories teach us about God and ourselves. One constant “thread” that we will see is God’s grace, human failure, and renewed hope in God.

Hoy comenzamos nuestro nuevo año litúrgico con el primer domingo de Adviento. Además de la Corona de Adviento, este año también usaremos el árbol Jesé como otra ayuda en nuestra preparación para celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús en Belén 2017 años atrás, su llegada a nuestras vidas en una variedad de formas cada día, y preparándonos para su venida nuevamente al final de los tiempos. El árbol Jesé se nombra en Isaías 11: 1: “Una rama saldrá del tronco de Jesé, un brote surgirá de sus raíces.” Es una ma-nera de contar la historia de Dios en el Antiguo Tes-tamento y conectar la Temporada de Adviento con la fidelidad de Dios a través de 4000 años de historia. La rama es un signo bíblico de novedad de desalien-to, que se convirtió en una forma de hablar sobre el esperado Mesías como se encuentra en Jeremías 23: 5, “Así dice Yavé: Llega el día en que yo haré surgir un hijo de David que se potará como rey justo y pru-dente. El gobernará este país según la justicia y el derecho.”La historia de Dios en el Antiguo Testa-mento se puede contar ya sea en términos de los personajes principales de la historia, o de eventos fundamentales que ayudaron modele y defina el ca-mino de Fe de las personas a través del Antiguo Tes-tamento. School News

It was a busy month at St. Nicholas Catholic Academy as we honored our Veterans and current military. On

November 9 we hosted a special breakfast for Veter-ans with entertainment provided by our students. It was featured on the Diocesan TV station, The NET, on November 13. If you missed it is avail-able on our school website www.sntschoolny.org.

Our families continued their charitable work to show their appreciation for our current soldiers by collect-ing packages of clothing, snacks and personal items. We shipped 15 boxes of these supplies to a parent of one of kindergarten parents currently stationed in Afghanistan to share with his company and bring some Christmas cheer and let them know how much they are appreciated.

We are also beginning registration for next year's kin-dergarten. If you are interested please contact the school for an application.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

Last week, the youth of the parish got into the spirit of giving by helping distribute turkey dinners to 42 needy families for Thanksgiving.

The youth organized boxes of sides, a turkey and a pie and helped those receiving the gift to get the boxes in cars or shopping carts.

The donations were made possible by the generosity of a parishioner and the members of FDNY Engine 315 and Ladder 125, and through discounts and manager specials by Paul of Key Food on 169th Street and 69th Avenue in Flushing. Thank you to all who made a Thanks-giving dinner possible for those less fortunate!

For many who are homebound in our parish the simple visit of an Extra-Ordinary Minister with the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is their greatest joy.
