From the Pastor’s Desk…

On this second Sunday of Advent, we reflect on the life and message of John the Baptist who is known as the prophet of Advent. John’s message was very clear: “There is one among you whom you do not recognize.” (Jn 1:26) He is the Messiah, listen to him and be saved. His preaching was also candid and concise. He called the crowds who were making excuses “You brood of vipers!…” and commanded them instead to “Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance.” (Lk 3: 7-8).

John’s greatness, however, lies in his humility. When some people mistook him to be the Messiah, he passion-ately and humbly declared that he was not. He was just a VOICE crying out in the desert. Unfortunately, for various reasons, many people chose to ignore this voice.

The Jesuit theologian, Karl Rahner, once wrote: “We have to listen to the voice of the one calling in the wilder-ness, even when it confesses: I am not He. You cannot choose not to listen to this voice ‘because it is only the voice of a man.’ And likewise, you cannot lay aside the message of the Church because the Church is ‘not worthy to untie the shoelaces of its Lord who goes on before it.’ It is, indeed, still Advent.”

John’s image is often portrayed with his finger pointing to the one who is about to come: Jesus Christ. You might have noticed that when you enter St. Nick’s from the main entrance (from Goethals Avenue) the figure of John is there standing on your right side pointing all to Christ. May we, like John the Baptist, also point to Jesus and lead others to Him by the example of our lives marked with simplicity and humility.

The Simbang Gabi Christmas Play

After the 5:00 PM Mass last Sunday, St. Nick’s parishioners enjoyed the Christmas play which featured St. Nick’s children and their parents. Various scriptural stories were made alive and served as a very fitting opening to the Advent season. It was really a joy watching our own people share their acting, singing and dancing talents to give glory and praise to God in anticipation of Christmas. Thank you, Bing and Joe Custodio, and your team, for this faith-filled presentation!

The Flea Markets

I want to thank Leybi Lima, Jozef Komosinski, Marquis Shephard and all the organizers and volunteers in the Outdoor Flea Market. You all did a great job. I am also grateful to the volunteers in our Indoor Flea Market in Tolentine Hall. God always provides people who work in His vineyard and sometimes this may be in our flea markets. God bless you all for your service to St. Nick’s Parish. Have a blessed Advent Season, Fr. John Francis

second SUNDAY OF ADVENT

As we begin our second week of Advent, we continue to place more symbols on the Jesse Tree of persons or events throughout the Old Testament which gradually led up to the fulfillment of God’s promise to send the Messiah. At the main entrance to the Church, we have the Jesse Tree with its symbols and concise explanations. The biblical citations are given for those who would like to read the background for each symbol. Though at both side en-trances to the Church, we do not have a Jesse Tree, we do have the explanation of the symbols for each week of Ad-vent. Next Sunday, December 17th, our children in the Faith Formation Program (except those who have not yet received First Communion) will be approaching the sacra-ment of reconciliation as a great way to prepare their minds and hearts for a renewed birth of Jesus in their hearts on Christmas.

Friday, December 15th, will be the second Family Confir-mation Preparation Session in the Faith Formation Center beginning at 6:00 pm with a simple meal together, then parents will have the opportunity to hear Dr. Conrad Go-mez, an active Catholic psychologist speak about ways to help parents in the formation of pre-adolescents/adolescents. The students preparing for Confirmation will proceed to their respective classes.

God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation

Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director de Formación de Fe
