Dear Friends in Christ,

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”

Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus handed on his mission to his disciples. He witnessed

and taught them the truths of the Kingdom of God. He said “go and make disciples and baptize in

the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He also let them know that he would

continue to be with them through the power of the Holy Spirit when he said “and behold, I am with

you always, until the end of the age.” They were to go forth and share the Good News of the Gospel.

What began as a small seed, has grown to over two billion Christians around the world.

When it comes to a mission statement for the Church, Jesus got it down to three words: Go make disciples.” The

Church exists to evangelize and share Jesus’ life-giving message. We reflect that in our own parish mission statement: “The

Mission of St. Patrick parish is to encourage, form and inspire intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.” What does the word

“discipleship” mean? Discipleship flows from a relationship with our Lord. It’s an internalization of the great command-

ment of Jesus . Sherry Weddell in her book “Forming Intentional Disciples’ describes it this way: “All things serve and flow

from the central thing: the worship and love of the Blessed Trinity with one’s whole heart, soul, mind and strength, and

therefore the love of one’s neighbor as oneself.” In the same work she quotes Papal theologian Fr. Cantalamessa who says

discipleship begins when “adult persons at last have the occasion to hear the kerygma (core gospel message of Jesus), re-

new their own baptism, consciously choose Him as their own personal Lord and Savior, and commit themselves actively in

the life of their church.” A disciple is someone who has a deep abiding relationship with the Lord and is strengthened to

share Jesus’ message with others. That has always been the teaching of the Church.

A disciple is also a learner. As Catholics, we can never stop growing in our friendship with God through our recep-

tion of the sacraments and through prayer. We can never stop deepening our knowledge of the faith through our study of

the scriptures and the teachings of the Church. We never graduate from discipleship, it is an ongoing growth process.

God will give us all the graces we need but we need to do our part as well. In addition, a disciple always has an outward

glance and looks for ways to serve, especially serving those in need. Jesus always reached out to the poor and the wound-

ed, and it’s important that we live our discipleship with the heart of Jesus.

On this Trinity Sunday, we reflect on who God is and who he calls us to be. He sent those first disciples forth to

proclaim his message, to baptize, and to make disciples. The Lord counts on us to hand on the faith to best of our ability.

We thank the Lord for the gift of faith that we have been given, and we pray for the grace to hand on this great gift with

enthusiasm, courage and compassion. May God bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!

In Christ,

Msgr. Steve Knox

We still need to stand up for life and let people know that

there are still people who will fight for the voiceless.

Pro-life is making great progress… but the issue is not fully resolved. Do you know that Planned Parenthood, one of the

largest abortion "clinics" in the U.S. (at 22,000 sq. ft.), is just 16 miles away from the Downtown Church?

If you still believe that Planned Parenthood provides essential "services" to women, please take a moment to see what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has to say at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-

Father Twenty presents “The History of the Catholic Church” at St. Peter Church

This Summer!

The history of the Catholic Church is one of the most fascinating stories ever told. It’s the tale of Popes and

Saints, Sinners and Scoundrels, Wars, Insurrections, Revolutions, and

Miracles. There are high points and low points, the outrageous and the sublime. Join Father Jared Twenty,

currently the associate at Holy Cross, Batavia, as he discusses who we are,

what we believe, and how we became who we are. You’re sure to learn something new and enjoy this gifted and knowledgeable

speaker as he presents a six part series:

The History of the Catholic Church

At St. Peter Church 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva

Tuesdays from 7-8 PM in McLoughlin Hall:

June 12, 19, and 26 July 3, 10, and 17

All are welcome. You need not

attend each session. Come to as many or as few as you like. They do build on one another, but you’ll be able to dive right in at any session.
