From the Pastor’s Desk……

Chapters 6—12 of the Book of Isaiah reflect cir-cumstances of the two decades before the fall of Israel (721 BC) when the southern kingdom of Judah was embroiled in clashes with Assyria. Today’s reading expresses Judah’s hope that a true Son of David would soon appear. Such a king would not only bring military victory and pro-tection; he would embody the ideal of Israelite kingship. The expected child is a sign that God was truly present among the people of Judah in dangerous times. Like God he would be com-pletely dedicated to the welfare of the people, ruling wisely and bringing peace to the kingdom. The brief letter of Titus, along with two letters at-tributed to Timothy, form a group called the “Pastoral Letters.” The writings give insight into emerging concerns and structures in the early church. Matters discussed include elements of Christian living in the midst of opposing cultures and values, distribution of and qualifications for various ministries, and proper church structures. Titus today deals with Christian conduct. Like Paul he stresses that the Christ event is God’s gracious gift, initiated solely by divine love. Like Paul he also expects an immanent return of Christ. Of the four gospels, only Matthew and Luke begin with an account of the birth of Christ. Luke was a Greek speaking Gentile writing to an audi-ence of Romans living in present day Turkey. He is the only evangelist to place Jesus on the world stage of his time, locating the Savior’s birth in the reign of Caesar Augustus and naming Quirinius as governor of Syria. No historical record exists of a census being taken at that time although there was one under Quirinius. Luke most likely uses that event in order to locate Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, indicating the fulfillment of Micah which states that the Messiah King would come

from the city of David, Bethlehem. Luke’s Jesus comes for the poor, the marginalized, etc. And so the first to learn of his birth are shepherds, gener-ally despised and avoided by other Jews as un-clean sinners. The proclamation of the angel not only challenges Jewish religious assumptions, but contradicts the imperial cult. Caesar was pro-claimed as divine Lord and savior. Not so, pro-claims Luke: not the Roman emperor but the in-fant lying in a feeding trough is the true savior. Might I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry and Blessed Christmas. My prayer is that you are able to spend this holiday with family and friends and that, somehow, the peace which Christ alone can bring will become reality. Per-haps our prayer this Christmas should be that His peace come to heal our divided nation. I would ask you to also remember in prayer today the people for whom this holiday is particularly lonesome. Many people cannot travel to be with family, military personnel are often separated from family and people who have lost a loved one often find the holiday difficult. Let’s keep them in our prayers. Last week’s bulletin contained some photos of the living room in the rectory which looked like Santa’s workshop with all of the gifts your pur-chased for children at St. Martin’s Center. You are incredible generous and trust me—God is smiling on you. The parish office is always closed the week be-tween Christmas and New Years. The office will reopen on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. I’m here in case of any emergencies or deaths. You can reach me through the office at 454-8085 or in my apartment at 454-4032. The Mass schedule for New Year’s will be the regular weekend Mass schedule with the Vigil on

Saint Hedwig News From the Pastor’s Desk continued………

Saturday evening at 5 and on New Year’s Day at 8 & 10:30 AM. St. Martin’s Center is looking for volunteers to help with their food pantry. Help is needed to co-ordinate distribution of food and associated du-ties in the Pantry. Average distribution of 20 to 40 clients per day. Hours of operation M-Fri 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM. Assist passing out food, basic wiping down refrigerators, mopping floors, stocking shelves, preparing boxes for dis-tribution, helping needs-based clients out to vehi-cle with food when necessary, simple clerical work such as sign-in sheets. Volunteers please contact Margie Olszewski at molszewski @stmartincenter.org. This is a wonderful organi-zation, and it would be a great way to render a service perhaps one day a week. George Hunt’s job at the Post Office was to pro-cess all mail with illegible addresses. One day just before Christmas, a letter landed on his desk simply addressed in shaky handwriting: “To God.” With no other clue on the envelope, George opened it and read: “Dear God, I am a 93 year old widow living on Social Security. Yes-terday someone stole my purse which had $100 in it, which was all the money I had in the world and I get no Social Security check until after Christmas. I had invited two friends to come over for Christmas lunch, but without the money I have nothing to buy food with. I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. God, can you help me?” George was deeply touched and he posted the letter on the staff bulletin board. The letter touched the others and everyone dug into their pocket and between them raised $95 which they sent to the old lady. They all felt a warm glow over what they had done. A few days later another letter arrived addressed to God and they all gathered around for George to read it. “Dear God. How can I ever thank you? I was able to provide a lovely lunch for my friends and I told them of your wonderful gift. We can’t get over it. Even our parish priest is beside himself with joy. By the way, there was $5 missing. I think it must have been those thieves at the Post Office.” A good laugh always takes away some of the burden of life. May your day and this Christmas be filled with laughter and God’s love.

Merry Christmas!

The unborn prophet cannot speak but he moves his mother to speak for him. She affirms that the unborn Christ is already her Lord. Jesus is Lord from the womb. Since he is the Prince of Peace, this gives credence to the late Mother Te-resa’s contention that there can be no peace in the world while we are at war with the child in the womb. Every child is a reflection of the Christ-child.

Due to early publication deadlines the offertory for December 18, 2016 will be published in the Janu-ary 1, 2017 bulletin.

HOMELESS OVERFLOW SHELTER—

Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners we

have meals and volunteers covered for the over-

flow homeless shelter we will be hosting February

1-8. However, we are in need of monetary dona-

tions for the many expenses we incur including

dumpster, daily cleaning service, supplies and a

donation to Church of the Nativity to cover utilities and

miscellaneous items. Contributions can be dropped in the

collection basket or sent to the rectory. Envelopes are

available next to the bulletins in the back of the church.

Thank you for your support of our community members

who are in need. If you have any questions about this pro-

ject contact Angie Kontur 434-9653 or [email protected].

Make A Difference—Volunteers Needed Highmark Caring Place is a center for grieving children,

adolescents and their families. The peer support group pro-

grams offered at the Caring Place are provided at no cost

to families in the Erie County Community, but rely on the

dedication of a large group of caring adult volunteers.

We are currently recruiting volunteers. No particular expe-

rience is needed—just an ability to truly listen to others

and to support them through their heartache and their heal-

ing. Volunteers are provided with the necessary training

which gives them an understanding of how children

grieve, and of how the Caring Place program works.

If you would like to join a team of compassionate , caring

individuals who support grieving children and families,

please call Kristen Huber, Volunteers Services Coordina-

tor at 814-528-0934 or [email protected].

Training starts in January 2017
