Dear Friends in Christ, There is an interesting story from Native American culture that can give us some insight into today’s Gospel: “One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, lust, greed, arrogance, self-pity, dishonesty and sel ishness. It pulls your life into disobedience to the Great Spirit. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, and faith. It gives you strength to follow the Great Spirit.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The elderly Cherokee replied, “The one you feed.” In today’s gospel Jesus confronts evil and drives it away. People who were possessed by the evil one are set free. Vices that damage human lives are no match for the forgiveness and healing grace that comes from Jesus. There can be no doubt that there is a power of evil in our world that can invade our personal lives and our communities. A big part of Jesus’ ministry, and the Church’s ministry, is to help people ind libera-tion and freedom from sin and vice. The key is staying close to the light who is Jesus. In a world where there is a great deal of darkness, the light of Christ keeps us on the right path which ultimately leads to heaven. We receive the light of Christ through the sacraments and through our prayer which keeps us close to him. Unfortunately many drift from the light and into darkness where they become very vulnerable in the face of temptation. May we be strengthened to stay close to the Lord so that we can bring his light to others. During Lent we are offering a program that can help us in this area of our spiritual journey. Seminarian John Kladar and I are leading a “33 Days to Merciful Love” parish program. We will be drawing from Fr. Michael Gaitley’s program to help participants gain new insight into God’s merciful love and how to receive it more deeply into our lives. Please take a look at the information/registration piece we have on page 7 of today’s bulletin and consider participating. St.PatrickCatholicSchoolOpenHouse This weekend we mark the beginning of Catholic Schools Week with an Open House at the Crane Road K-8 School, and at the Downtown Preschool. Please feel free to contact our Principal Lisa Brown (K-8) or Veronica Day (preschool) if you would like to schedule a tour or are in need of more information. A Catholic school education is a gift that lasts a lifetime so please consider St. Patrick Catholic School. In Christ, Msgr. Steve Knox
